PETITION: iPhone 5 RECALL - Power Button Defect

Has anybody else signed this petition?

PETITION: iPhone 5 RECALL - Power Button Defect
http://iphone5recall.com

I know a lot of people who've been having this power button defect problem with the i3, i4 and i5 is even worse. Apple really needs to fix this problem once and for all.

iphone 5 power button NOT Working anymore
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5127991?tstart=0

---

Added edit: Everybody should sign the petition and complain to Apple to fix the problem:

Hi, I would like to see Apple finally communicate with the public on the issue of the 'power button defect' and let us know what Apple plans to do about it. It is a serious issue and these iphones are WAY too expensive to keep having these issues over and over.

Also, please add "restart" to the "Assistive Touch" instead of just "power off" for those whose power buttons no longer work at all.

Take some responsibility here, Apple, and fix this issue once and for all. You have no excuse not to fix this problem.

https://ssl.apple.com/support/feedback/

I discovered all of this because my kid has a used i3 a friend gave to him after my buddy upgraded to the i5. The power button was a constant problem and stopped working completely so, he can never turn it off. He just has to keep charging it. So, we were checking into upgrading to the i5c and I was talking about this to a different friend who said his own i5 power button had broken down. I checked into it further by calling my local cell phone repair store and asked them about the issue. Their experience with the power button problem is that this issue has actually gotten worse with the i5. For some, the "Assistive Touch" is helpful but, it's not available on the i3 OS (I don't know about the i4 - if somebody knows please post here), so, there's nothing you can do except pay an outrageous amount to replace the entire power button mechanism only to have it die on you again or buy a new outrageously over-priced iphone only to have it break down even faster.

These are horrendous options for such an expensive iphone from a multi-billionaire company like Apple.

Apple needs to provide something similar to a Windows start button to easily allow people to turn on and off without using any cheap buttons that are almost guaranteed to break down on you just after your warranty expires, of course - how perfect for Apple, huhh. These iphones are too outrageously expensive for something as simple as the power button to break down so easily. A button on the face of the phone we can simply hold down for a few seconds would be a great way to turn on & off. A complete re-design of the power button is in order or boycott Apple and the iphone until it gets fixed.

These iphones aren't even worth $50 let alone the $700 they charge.

Never heard of this

The issue or the petition? The issue is pretty bad actually, I had my original and replacement iPhone 5's power button fail. I don't have any warranty anymore so I replaced it with the help of one of my friends(It is such a pain in the ass as you literally have to take out 90% of the phone to get to the power button). I think it might slowly be breaking again, time will tell.

I gotta say, this petition is a year late though.

No I knew about the problem, just not the petition.

My wife's 4 and 5, then my sister's 5 power buttons all went out. They both fenagled their way to 5S upgrade.

Hmm I've never heard of this either, I also agree that this petition is over a year late.

I had to replace the power button on my i4. It was a pain in the ass and broke just after warranty was up.

I saw a couple phones come in for warranty exchanges while I was working at bestbuy. I didn't realize this was a larger issue, I saw it maybe 3 times in 6 months.

My iphone5 is just out of warranty by 2 months. I've got the exact symptoms others are experiencing. I can get the power button to work by pressing the left side of it. Anything I can do to get it fixed without dropping dime? I can deal with pressing off-center to get it to work, but I fear complete failure is not out of the question.

Interesting petition. Watching this.

They aren't built to be durable, they are built to be stylish and luxurious

The public and the press equate stylish materials and metal/glass with 'build quality', and Apple does everything they can to further this myth.

People still believe 'plastic = bad build quality', you'll see this repeated in every single review of a Samsung phone, when in fact the facts are they are much more reliable and better built than the competition.

I doubt a petition will cause a recall of the iPhone. It took 13 deaths for a Government Motors to recall a car, what makes you think the government would force Apple (who's tendrils are arms-length in the government) to recall an entire lineup of phones?

Take it as a loss and a lesson and move on (away from iPhones).

Well they are built well, it's just a terrible idea to give their only button on the phone a priority use, of course it's going to wear out. Android phones for the most part have a home button but also divvy out tasks to capacitive buttons.

I was never a big fan of one button.

The only thing I'm aware of is to add the "Assistive Touch" that allows you to use your buttons, including "power off" without actually using the buttons. That way you don't have to use the buttons. So, try that and let us know how it works out for ya. But, an issue here is that if you're power button doesn't hardly work, then, you may not be able to boot-up again so ... at that point, you'll just need to plug it in to charge and it should come on automatically. In the video below it did not give an option to "restart" that did not include loosing all your settings and passwords etc.

In fact, I think I would use AT from the beginning even with a new iphone to hopefully ensure the power button doesn't break down - don't use the button at all unless you have to.

The problem for some is that 'Assistive Touch' requires iOS 5 for the "Accessibility" menu.

Never had an issue with the power buttons on either my wife's 4S or my 4S. She also has a 5S for work and there is no issue there either. My issues have been with that shitty home button. It is starting to go out on mine. Sometimes I need to press it a few times to close apps. I hope they do away with it and use a touch sensor next time. The button on the 5S feels and sounds even cheaper thanks to that fingerprint reader. Wonder how long that will last on my wife's phone...

My friends have used this as an excuse to get free iPhones from the Apple store when they crack their screens

petitions don't work
second a power button wearing out over time is not a defect. I find it ironic people who buy a sealed battery phone would claim that an item wearing out should be covered. Does Apple cover your battery if it doesn't charge as much after the warranty?

Apple store folk have a proprietary tool to check battery integrity - if it's below a certain percentage within warranty, they will swap the phone

What does that have to do with out of warranty recalls which the OP wants? If your power switch dies under warranty I bet apple will fix it.

He was responding to your sarcasm....

Also OP I think you are thinking this defect is larger then it really is. This is the first I've heard of the power button issue on any iPhone. Don't you think if it was a huge defect it would've been reported everywhere? Remember the yellow screen and the antenna band issues on the iPhone 4?

Chances are if its not working then its either a very minor occurrence, pressing the button to hard or from drop damage. You can replace the power button yourself If you spare a little time and it doesn't cost much.

If you think you are actually going to boycott apple over this, then you are going to be here a long time.

Most reviews list Samsung's plastic as a con for "cheap feeling" and yet not make the same statement about Nokia's plastic because Nokia doesn't make their plastic feel cheap. LG's G2 and Nexus 5 is plastic as well but it doesn't feel cheap either. Cheap feeling plastic seems to be a trait that only Samsung shares with cheap Chinese OEM's.

And if we're going to talk about what's a "better build," breakability tests are in order. Even though we don't have a consistent phone drop test like car crash tests, with enough sample size, a general trend could be drawn. And starting with the GS3, Samsung's flagships hasn't fared well. The trend even shows Nokia's plastic phones could survive more drops than Samsung's. Maybe Samsung would have some better internal reinforcement in the GS5, who knows.

No, the problem is far worse. All you have to do is a basic search to find out it's a consistent problem but, Apple isn't tracking it and most people who have the issue either fix it one way or another or replace it without telling any body. So, all the numbers of people having these issues repeatedly are not being counted or tracked. So, it's way worse than is presented here.

As you admit yourself: "This is the first I've heard of the power button issue on any iPhone"

Have you ever even checked? Appearently not. These iphones are too damned expensive to be having these issues and it is *NOT* always caused by drops as you assume - loads of people have had this issue who have never dropped their iphones, yet, the issue has repeated on them after fixing it or even after a replacement!!!

"Don't you think if it was a huge defect it would've been reported everywhere?"

It is, right here for starters:

Good luck with that. You have absolutely no idea what the hell you're talking about at all do you ... I guess you're not aware that you have to practically take the entire phone apart to fix it as the video below shows, which is why Apple charges $269 to fix it:

When I got mine replaced the guy told me that it's a known defect and means you get a new phone as a replacement. Both of my iPhone 5's had this issue, I had to take apart my entire phone now since it is out of warranty and fix it myself. The only other person that I knew well enough that had an iPhone also had this problem a few times. It is a pretty large issue but people just don't seem to talk about it much. It doesn't cost much, but it can take over 2 hours if it's your first time doing it and there are quite a few possibilities of destroying your phone while you are doing it.

I took a look on the forums and it does appear to be a issue on many phones. Could be caused by a number of reasons or the phone could only take so many depresses.

If you really want to put the hurt on a company then I recommend you stop purchasing Apple products and giving them additional revenue. Do Apple employee even read the forums on there?
Apple sees themselves making big bucks so wouldn't they assume they are making a quality product? So what if a couple thousand report this issue, how will they know its not user induced?

Creating a silly little online petition will do nothing to change the situation. What you should be doing is creating a movement and vow to not purchase any more Apple products including iTunes.

and stop making hackintosh pc's too. I have a few "friends" who hate Apple, and they keep building hackintosh pc's talking about how cool, customizable, and how much cheaper it is. I only see that theysecretly love Apple and just too cheap to buy one. They're the worst kind of haters...

Thanks for checking, Domini. I appreciate that.

I've got no serious bone against Apple, I'm not interested in 'hurting the company' ... myself and a billion others would simply like Apple to finally fix these issues with the power button and whatever else. Apple can start by promising its customers a re-design for the entire power button.

Well I could take your friends side on that and understand that apple hardware is extremely overpriced for what you get plus they have lots of proprietary cables. If they like their software then I don't see a reason to hate them.

I understand you don't want to hurt a company, but Apple is worth around $400 Billion now. They have millions of customers worldwide(10million in US alone)

I'm not trying to put you down but money makes an impact on a company this large. I know you may like their products and enjoy what they've done over the years, but why continue to purchase anything from them if they haven't fixed a known issue that has existed over the past 5 years?

To put it simple, money talks, the internet does not, unless it involves a major press release

sounds to me like these "friends" are pretty smart. They are getting to enjoy the software they want to, without paying the overpriced inflated cost of the hardware. They save a boatload of cash and still have fun.

If all you see is them being "too cheap" to buy one, well it's a safe bet that Apple has you firmly in their reality distortion field. And that statement alone tells me you are one of those people who feel superior and smug even though my computer has the same (or better) hardware inside, just without a fancy apple case or logo.

an i5 is an i5, a hard drive is a hard drive, they paid for the software, and the hardware on their own... at the end of the day there really is only one question to ask yourself. Is a slick looking computer case and mouse worth a $1000 premium?

Too funny - I had no idea how common this was. Mine started doing this a few weeks ago. I figured it was just me.

I hope you're not assuming that *I* created that recall petition because, if so, you'd be wrong. I had nothing to do it nor did I have anything to do with any of the links. I learned long ago never to assume things.
