Will we ever get a new Unreal Tournament?

I'm in! I'm a sucker for capture the flag style games w/ map making tools. Reminds me of many nights spent playing Quake TF and TFC until the early morning hours with my clan.

Give me UT99 with UT3 graphics, thats it. Keep everything else the same.

They need to make three games at this point.

- Unreal - This should be largely single player like the original Unreal and Unreal 2. Make the multiplayer like Unreal 2 XMP.

-Unreal Tournament- Make this like UT99 and only include DM/TDM/1v1/CTF type gametypes... balance the weapons for this.

-Battlefield Unreal- Onslaught really. Balance things around the larger maps and vehicles.

Ug, bad necro! Had my hopes up for a second there...

At this point I would really love to see a reboot of Unreal in the U4 engine. Start from the very beginning and remake Unreal 1 with all the old-school shooter game-play mechanics, expand on the original story a little, and give us the brand new eye-popping graphics etc.

Then give it the multiplayer from UT99 in the updated engine.

Epic would live up to their name for the first time in a decade.

As it is, we're getting FortNight, a rip-off cross between MineCraft, L4D, & TF2. It looks interesting but way out of character for Epic. I have serious doubts that they'll pull it off and actually make something fun.

this, ut99 is the best in the series.
can anyone tell me if there is still a large player base for ut3? i dont want to install to find that people on play warfare.
the last time i played that is all i could find.
i just remember the game died out quick and many were unhappy with it.

but with the way games have changed, not saying it's a good thing, just another ut with updated graphics would not survive.
there would need to be changes.
not saying a perk system or copy cat stuff form other games, but it would have to do something new.

UT3's player base is ONLY warfare. Believe it or not, there is still a strong health UT99 community.

Minecraft? I agree with the L4D & TF2, but minecraft??

lol I play DM everyday, if you are European there are multiple DM servers that are usually full. In the US/Canada there are 2 active DM servers that get players every day. UT3 is dead but you can still play.

As for a new UT? Not from Epic anyways.

titanfall feels a lot like q3-ut instant gib since people just fall over and you jump all over the place

UT2014 would have been epic! Titanfall is cool but I want to fly the Manta again. PANCAKE!

Not going to hold my breathe for a new UT. UT2K4 is still my go-to for my UT fix. At this point I am only hoping that Doom 4 will have a nice Quake-feel to it's MP if they include a MP at all.

Is there still a decent UT04 community? I wonder if my old 5-disc-installation copy is still around here somewhere, hah.

Doom, Quake, UT deathmatches have lost their lustre for me. They're just not fun. I think back to Duke Nukem 3D and the fun we had laying trip bombs for each other, tossing pipe bombs down holes etc. And Hexen with the Morph Ovum. Nowadays there's no style and it's not as much fun.

I don't think they will bring it back. The IP is tired and outdated so its easier to come up with something more revenant to todays gamer. I loved UT2004 and have many fond memories of LAN parties with mods. Fun times.

Probably not until they figure out how to bastardize UT4 for consoles.

Took the words from my mouth, as they did the last installment... lets do a crap console port to PC lovers who made this game the famous icon that it is...

Why would you say its tired and outdated? Its still an amazing game but just needs a graphical facelift. They kind of did it with UT3 but they bombed on that one.

UT3 Black Edition + classic maps megapack. Better than a beer after work at relieving stress.

UT2K4 is still my favourite but looks very dated graphically at this point.

Yep. UT2004 + UTComp = best possible UT related fun. Digital extremes really came up with a strong Quake competitor and Epic was smart to build UT2004 on that. Most maps sucked but a few were more than playable - Compressed, Ironic, Rankin. 3 good maps is still better than UT99 and UT3 combined.

Fortnight has a lot of elements of scavenging materials from the environment then using them to build your own weapons and base etc. The videos I've seen on it gave me the impression that they were trying to cash in on some of the MineCraft appeal. Like I said, no idea if they'll actually pull it off, that's just the impression I got from the few video's I've seen.

Has the scavenging & crafting elements similar to MC, the action zombie-shooting elements of L4D, and the cartoony art style of TF2.

Because the IP is dead and old, like CRT monitors and typewriters.

The sort of movement, weapon style, and gameplay (CTF, TDM) took a backseat on the PC. It was replaced with realistic weapons, reloading, less acrobatics, blah blah.

All of the older, more classic shooters like Doom, Quake, UT, Tribes simply aren't as popular with this generation of gamers. They still have fanatically loyal player bases, but they aren't going to sell at the level they once did and people are starting to realize that.

It wasn't consoles that killed it either. It was CS, Battlefield, and various PC games that drove the spike through it's heart.

me love some Bombing Run with Arena style maps. Hope they include Bombing Run if they ever do decide to bring it back.

Just because it isn't AS popular does not mean it should not exist. I think the real problem with UT was they tried to dumb it down to appeal to the realistic shooter crowd and it backfired. Because it was not dumb enough and at the same time pissed off their existing user base.

There are plenty of companies out there that have made games that are not AS popular as COD, it doesn't mean they were failures. And they keep making them meaning they must be making some money. EPIC should continue to keep UT and running at the very least as a tech demo. Sorry but it is not possible to show off all the capabilities of your engine with realistic shooters that are so limited in possibilities.

I would also even argue that the popularity of titan fall may suggest that the masses of COD players have now been indoctrinate into FPS gaming and may be thirsty for something a little different, a little more challenging.

That's not how capitalism and business works.

You have X staff and operating costs. So you should devote your staffs time to the projects that make the most money possible. If you devote your staffs time to projects that make less money you're running your business wrong. It's also a sure sign that your investors and all else involved should be looking for a way to screw you into the ground and pillage the corpse of your company.

I don't like it, but old school style sci-fi shooters don't sell the way they used to. They were killed by Counter Strike, Battlefield, and the slew of other realism shooters that ate their breakfast and stole their lunch.

From a strictly financial standpoint, it's was better for Epic to focus on Engine sales and Gears than it was on UT. UT still might not be a worthy use of staff time. Their internal bean counters will run the metrics and we will see another UT if it proves to be the most efficient use of staff time again.

I'd love to see UT and Quake return to the top of the heap with massive communities. But I just don't see it playing out.

I am quite aware of how capitalism works. Here is one for you why go into a market that is already way OVER saturated with competitors. You also forget that there are many things that do not directly result in measurable profit but are still an important part of a business.

Also you seem to completely fail to understand that in an art driven world like computer gaming no amount of the smartests bean counters can predict how a game will do. Ask the nay sayers about TF2. In fact it was probably your very smart bean counters who forged the direction of the abysmal failure UT3 was.

Epic probably makes most of their money off of the engine now days but the thing people often forget is that an engine is only attractive so long as it has show case title to show it off.

I have UT99 installed currently. However, I seem to have a problem with the performance of it. It's simply too fast. I'm not talking about the 970FPS timedemos...I'm talking about crossing the entire map in 1.1 seconds if you press the W or up-arrow key.

No matter what "game speed" I set, it just runs too fast to be playable...

/me sad.:(

Use a more modern renderer, they probably have fixes for this

If it were relevant to today's market they would have released or announced an update to the IP by now. Many IP's have a certain "shelf life" and UT's came and gone. Some franchises can be "rebooted" and brought back but some just need to go. For example look at Borderlands. I love the universe but I think it has maybe one more incarnation before Gearbox puts it to pasture and moves on to a different IP. Look at the God of War series. I remember watching the developer interview and they asked about a GOW4 and hey said they have been working on the same IP for almost a decade and its time to try something new and fresh.
I would love some games remade but I also understand its a business and they need to keep it "fresh" for the next generation of gamers. Heck Diablo 3 might be the last one for all we know after this expansion.

I had this same problem, here is how to fix it:

Its a UT engine Frame Limiter. Works perfectly, I limited the frames to 100. Not only can you limit frames, but you can run the game in DX10 mode for added lighting :). Looks great!

If you need a texture pack here is the link to that one, keep in mind their are quite a few, I've used this one and it looks good.
