New system won't post

Hey everyone,

Finally getting around to replacing my ancient PC (C2D Wolfdale....) and of course I'm running into issues.

Here are the build specs:
Code: 
Case: Corsair 540
PSU: SeaSonic SS-660XP2
Motherboard: Asus P8C WS
CPU: Intel i7-3770
HS/F: Corsair H90
RAM: 4x8G DDR3/1600 (g.Skill F3-1600C9D-16GXM x2)
GPU: eVGA GeForce GTX 760 SC 4GB

OS Drive: Samsung 840 EVO 750G

Other: StarTech PEXUSB3S400 (4x USB3 on PCIe x4 connector)
When I power the machine up I get "nothing", by which I mean the fans spin up but I get nothing on screen. No warning/error beeps. I've tried the on-board DVI in addition to the DL & both DVI connectors on the 760. I've pulled two of the RAM sticks without any changes to this behavior. I have not yet plugged in the TPM card since I don't feel like removing the USB card.

Any ideas on what to try next? I've contacted Asus support, but I expect them to just tell me to try different RAM (the "official" support list is very bare when it comes to 8G DIMMs).

Did you make sure the 12v 4/8-pin CPU power connector is plugged in?

You've indicated that you've tried connecting to on-board and the GPU to no avail. Have you tried removing the GPU entirely along with all other components sans those absolutely necessary for POST success as well?

Its probably the shitty board.... All you have to do is read the reviews and see all the random issues people have had with it.

You might also need a BIOS flash, I had this happen on an old Biostar AM3 once.

The Amazon reviews are fine, as are reviews from people who I know aren't idiot newegg customers (see the review at STH here). Also, if the board won't post how extactly do I flash the BIOS?

Yes, 8 pin (and all other power connectors) are plugged in.

I haven't, trying to avoid ripping apart the box I just finished putting together. I did go ahead and pull out the RAM and try a pair of known good 8G DDR3/1333 I had laying around. No luck with those either. I'll probably pull the USB card and hook up the TPM before I pull the GPU (either later tonight or tomorrow).

I know this sounds dumb, and I apologize in advance, but do you actually have a speaker attached to the motherboard? I don't think the P8C has a piezio built into the board, so unless you plug one into the speaker header, you may not hear the beep codes. Honestly I would be sure, then pull everything except the CPU. If it gives you a no video beep code, add the GPU. If it doesn't, maybe a bad CPU?

This is straight from ASUS, regarding the P8B:

1.1    Make sure all cables are connected well
1.2    Please clear CMOS to have a try(refer to motherboard manual for details)
1.3    Keep the necessary components ( a CPU, a memory, a graphic card )on board to test
1.4    If there is still blank screen, please connect the connector of speaker to check if there is any beeps
1.4.1               If there is no beep, please contact your retailer for a check
1.4.2               If there is beep, please try to judge from the beep code as the following steps, if the problem still remains after the troubleshooting, please contact your retailer for a check.
1.4.2.1      Memory issue: Beep (1 long 2 short)
A  Clean the Golden Finger of memory
B  Clean the memory slots
C  Leave only one memory stick to test
D  If convenient, please change different memory to test again
1.4.2.2      Graphics card issue: Beep (1 long 3 short)
A.  Clean the Golden Finger of graphics card
B.  Clean the graphics card slots
C.  Try to test the onboard graphics card if there is onboard VGA integrated
D.  If convenience, please change different graphic cards to test again
1.4.2.3      CPU issue: Beep (5 short)
A.       Check whether the CPU is in our CPU support list
B.        Check whether there are any damagers of your CPU or CPU socket.
C.      .Check whether the CPU fan is correctly connected
D.      Check whether the ATX_12V power cable is connected well
E.        If possible try to test with another CPU
1.5    If the PC could POST after the troubleshooting as the steps 1.3, please plug components back one by one to find out which one may cause this problem
 
2         the power LED is off
2.1    Make sure the power cable which connects to the front panel is well
2.2    Please swap a power supply for a try if possible.
2.3    If the problem still remains, please contact your retailer for a check.

Yes, 8 pin (and all other power connectors) are plugged in.

I RMA'ed the Biostar, that's how you flash a mobo that won't post, ;)
 
So, yeah no speaker attached... dug around the spare parts bin and found one got it hooked up. Pulled all of the RAM to test the speaker (it is working).

Went ahead and cleared the CMOS.

Put two of the original 8G DDR3/1600 sticks back in, powered up same result (no display, no error/warning beeps).

Also dug out a couple of old 2G DDR3/1333 sticks and stuck them in, same result.

At this point it seems to be falling into "1.4.1" above. I'll see if Asus responds to the ticket I opened before the return date hits.

Yeah, if I return this it won't be for a replacement... Generally I've had good luck with the Asus WS boards (even ones with crappy newegg reviews), guess not this time.
 
The Seasonic 660XP is a good unit, I have one but have you physically checked with a multi meter to see if the rails are within spec? It could be a dud.

In my case, I could either get a different CPU to boot the board and flash it, or RMA it to them to have them do it... Needless to say I just got my money back.

If I were you, and had the chance, I would get a refund and find something else, even if its a good board, ASUS support and RMA is horrid these days.

Did you try with just one stick? Maybe a bad channel?

I notice you aren't using a Xeon or ECC memory, I'm not sure there is really any incentive to use a C216 board in this case. If you do return the board, perhaps consider a good Z87 board if you are going to overclock, and a H87 if you aren't. Unless you were planning on moving to ECC or buying a Tesla or something.
 
I'm also confused by your choice of a workstation board paired with regular RAM and CPU.
