I keep an eye on products from both these companies, and thought I'd pass along their most recent sales.

SVS

SB12-NSD Sealed Sub 23-270Hz ± 3dB $599 (~14" cube. I own one. Excellent sound quality and all around performance for my small-medium room)
PB12-NSD Ported 18-150 Hz ± 3 dB $599 (much larger, heavier, more output/volume for big rooms in addition to lower bass)

M8 Subwoofer $249. Free shipping. 29Hz-250Hz +/-3dB. No experience with it, but, for it's (sale) price and size, I've read good things over at AVSforum.

Thanks, bit on the PB12-NSD. Being the same price as the SB12-NSD. As far as I could find it's the bigger badder brother. With the differences of being ported. Should be home theater champion I want. Will go nicely with my 5.1 SCS-02's sitting in their boxes that I picked up almost 2 years ago. Just need a nice receiver and some speaker stands!
 
Bit on the PB12-NSD. This will be my third one in my theater room. Should be fun :)

Just wanted to chime in with a big recommendation for SVS subwoofers. Amazing performance for the money. I've owned the PB10, PB12 and recently upgraded to a PC12-Plus. My neighbors hate me... until they come over to watch a movie. :p
 
Tempting...I own a 20-39 pci SVS cylinder sub and drives my wife crazy.

I'm wondering if either of these will drive her more crazy? :D

It seems HSU doesn't want to be left out of the action. They have the VTF-2 MK4 for $529 and the VTF-3 MK4 for $659.

A few months ago I shopped for a HT subwoofer and ended up going with the HSU VT-2 MK4 because it was about $100 cheaper than the SVS or Outlaw comparable subs at the time. All of the reviews I found raved about all three brands. So you really can't go wrong with any of these sales.
 
I can vouch for the SVS subs, those things are amazing. I switched out a SVS PB-12 for a PSA XV-15 and there are times I miss the SVS. The XV-15 is definitely better but it's also $799...at $599 this thing is a steal.

Another thumbs up for SVS - I've been using the same 20-39 PC+ since 2003, still shakes the house with a nice clean sound.

Im a big HSU fan. I have the VT-15h
 
I am also a big fan of HSU. Such clean, but loud bass! Also, the bigger Outlaw subwoofers were designed by Dr. HSU so you will get a very similar sound between the two brands. I have the HSU and I got my friend an Outlaw. I can attest to the similarity.
 
If I had the money I'd pick up two of the SVS PB12-NSDs to replace my single Outlaw LFM-1. Don't get me wrong, its been a trooper but the size of my room almost demands multiple subs. Alas I just built a new computer so there went the sub money.
 
Anyone have a suggestion on one of these for music? Electronic genres mostly. Any definitive ported vs sealed preferences? I had been looking at the SVS SB-1000 for a while.

I care exactly zero about home theater/movie performance - this will be 99% for music in small to medium sized spaces.
 
If you have a good full range speaker there is no need for a sub as music rarely reaches below 60 hz and good full range speakers can easily get down to 40 or so before rolling off. Of course full range speakers usually have low WAF (wife acceptance factor) due to their large footprint.

Electronic music genres frequently do extend below 60! :] Sometimes hiphop/rap stuff can get down there too. Totally agree for most rock type music though - But I'm totally set for all that! :)

I do have a pair of older Klipsch towers; They're rated down to 36hz on paper, but they effectively roll off well before that. I've never tested exactly where, but it's not satisfying at all when you're listening to a piece and the bassline backbone enters.... except it doesn't. Maybe I could get better towers with deeper effective range, but at this point I would rather just get a sub and be set instead of upgrading from towers I already like to some that still might not be sufficient.

I can't really browse for song examples at work, but an older track I can think of off the top of my head would be Black Sun Empire's "Arrakis". If you're interested, find a HQ youtube of that one and try listening with standard speakers alone vs a setup with a sub or a pair of headphones with deep powerful extension like DT770s (Fast forward to the "drop" if you hate Drum and Bass ;) ). Totally disappointing on the normal setup for me!

Another HSU lover here, Just Rolling the VTF-2, but it is really amazing and I prefer it over the SVS PC12 I had before it. Although, both are excellent.

Understandable. I had to go DIY to get what I wanted in an affordable price. I built a pair of Poly Natalia speakers some years back. They're a 3 way with usable bass down to about 25 hz. They were by no means cheap even though they're DIY and the correct parts aren't available any longer, although I'm sure someone could design something even better now.

I'm currently building a Tuba HT sub so I can finally cover the sub 20 range.
 
My buddy has a SVS, they make good stuff. Maybe not as good as Rythmik, :), but they are solid and top quality.

Based on my research and experience Hsu subwoofers are the most versatile when it comes to home theater/ music use. I use my setup for 80% HT and 20% music and have not found the VF2-MK4 to be lacking in either department. I played the song you listed and it sounded great on my modest setup (Andrew Jones Pioneers for 7.1 and Hsu VF2-MK4). I have the Hsu sub tuned to pickup midbass and the deep lows, forgoing the deepest lows (I think it cuts off at 20 or 22 Hz instead of going down to 18)).

Larger drivers/more power usually buy you better distortion characteristics. I'm sure most of the subs mentioned here are good. Keep in mind though, with music you're not supposed to hear your sub. It should blend completely.

Hopefully you guys are tuning properly as your room makes a huge difference and can add some weird peaks and valleys that make it obvious that there's a subwoofer rather than clean blended bass. Some free RTA tools are available - and a lot of receivers have good self tuning abilities.
