Some good news from Microsoft to businesses: business machines will continue to offer Windows 7 Professional for the time being. For the home users, the last date to order a PC running anything other than Professional will end October 31st.

Microsoft officials said erroneous information about Windows 7’s death sentence was posted online in December.

My work place just upgraded my desktop from a C2D @ 1.8GHz Win XP to a i5 3470 with Windows 7. I wish I was on that machine for my actual work, but instead of stuck on a P4 for production. Don't ask me why.
 
I just installed Windows 8.1 yesterday for my parents computer.

What a pile of fucking garbage.

Everything in the interface changed arbitrarily, it takes more clicks to do the same tasks (fucking UI fail, Microsoft. Fucking fail). And worst of all, if my dad wants to play Solitaire, all he has to do is create a Microsoft account.

A fucking account to play Solitaire.

It'll be a cold day in hell before corporate IT people will voluntarily slog through all that bullshit when Windows 7 works fine.

can't see any corp environment using windows 8 at all, the cost alone to teach there monky work force would bankrupt them

This is why when my Fiance's grandmother needed a new computer and just HAD to have an all in one desktop(still can't figure this out) instead of me building her a custom one, I took the extra effort to pull off all of the old files necessary to play standard windows games and embedded them into the new OS. Told her if she wanted to play games like she usually does, there they were but anything new, she was on her own. Did the same with the calender App that was included in vista but not 7(dafuq).


Business wise, I can't imagine the hell we'd have to deal with trying to deploy windows 8 machines to replace the still vast amount of xp machines. The average user just can't make that change without freaking out. FFS I've dealt with more people than I care to count that get worked up when their desktop icons aren't in the exact same spot every day.
 
well it is great that it will be available for sale but for now the support dates are unchanged... so.... yeah..

granted Long term support is till 2020 however.
 
The problem is way too many people that HAVE to use computers at work aren't that great at it.
These people are damn near incapable of making any type of adjustment, so moving to windows 8 from an earlier version would swamp IT and literally NOTHING would get done as people tried to relearn their interfaces.
Again, Win8 is really nice on a phone and tablet, easy to catch on on them, but just terrible on a non touchscreen PC, which would be every freaking computer in offices because companies are cheap as hell and get the most minimal speced system possible when purchasing.

Microsoft needed to do a better job with keeping things familiar to desktop users in 8. With 8.1 and now 8.1 Update 1 they've actually made some decent changes in that regard. If one it just using desktop apps, the different between 7 and 8.1 isn't as dramatically different with keyboard and mouse as the a lot of the lore goes. But yeah, the Start Screen is different as well as the modern search and the charms, but that's not where people using desktop apps would spend a ton of time.

Which is why I finished upgrading all the office systems to Windows 7 last year, and why any new systems purchased will also come with Windows 7.

That's also why, when a 80 year old relative needed a new computer to replace his old XP system, I pick up a business level desktop from the Dell outlet store with Windows 7. Moved his data & settings over and it only took him a few days to get used to it.

I run 8.1 at home and like it with except WTF with the search functionality. It is totally useless now. I live by it on my Work rig with Win7. I can locate documents so fast it is mind boggling. If I had to run Win 8 at work , I would need an assistant to do the things that I would no longer have time to do . I am dead serious.

Hmm, interesting. Installed 8 and upgraded to 8.1 on my daughter's (7 years old) and she hasn't had a single problem. Considering her school still uses a mix of WinXP and Win7, I expected a little more confusion, but she switches back and forth from Metro and the desktop fine.

Just gave my wife a new laptop for Valentines and installed 8.1. Configured it to boot straight to desktop, changed the preferences to open pictures with picture viewer instead of the default metro app, and installed Google Chrome.. .and she is happy. Has had a few more questions than my daughter, having worked with computers a lot longer obviously, but when I asked her if she wanted 7 or 8, she said "might as well go with the new and get used to it".

That has been my experience with it for the most part also with people.

I'm not sure 7 year olds being able to work with Metro was ever in dispute. In fact its been precisely the point.

I can located documents quickly with Windows 8. These kinds of claims are often made about Windows 8.x but are rarely accompanied by any concrete examples.

We debate the specifics of the UI all day long, much, if not most of it comes down to willingness to adapt, without that any change will suck. It ain't rocket science for the average home user.

For 99% of the people bitching they bitch only about Metro. I myself us windows 8, but set my default programs to the programs I like to use instead of the metro programs. I make good use of the taskbar so I rarely have to do much in the metro interface, just like when in windows 7 I don't sit in the start menu all day.

Therefore I myself don't have a single issue in Windows 8 because to me, I see nothing different that I do when using windows 7. I see a desktop that I run my programs from 99.9% of the day. All my programs run the same under windows 8 just like they did with Vista before I upgraded from it.

Seriously, Windows 8 has it's faults. I wouldn't want to roll it out at work and deal with all the changes people are afraid of. However, for a lot of people it can be set up to work pretty much no different than Windows 7 if that is your thing. I've been running it since Beta, and even then, on a restart I just had to click the desktop tile and pretty much never saw Metro again until another reboot (which is pretty seldom on my desktop).

All the whining about "have to create a microsoft account", "everything takes extra clicks", etc. just seems to be a lot of "it's different.. I don't like it". The issues with search not working as well or other more "technical" problems... those I feel are generally warranted and are definitely things that could be improved upon. But to say that the whole OS is crap because they changed Users to Accounts.... or because Metro shows up once in a while... or because you have to create a microsoft account to play solitaire is pretty pathetic.

I'm convinced some do it just to be contrarians. I don't utterly hate win8 but it has had so many issues I just can't understand defending it overall.

I think what grinds my gears the most is despite supposedly being a hybrid OS (because Microsoft missed the tablet boom), on release they had two versions of the OS anyway with RT for the tablets that couldn't run the full version. Yet apparently, it was just too much for them to have a desktop mode and touch screen mode UI. All to push people to their new app store ecosystem. The logic in levying your desktop user base for the consumer tablet market escapes me.

I generally am in support of Windows8 but I wholeheartedly agree here. It seems the decision to foist the Metro interface was a political one. I think Microsoft was afraid that, if given the chance, most users would disable it completely and that would put egg on the face of MS, although I imagine most tablet users would be more inclined to use it.
 
Once I got passed the "this sucks I don't want to have to learn something new" part of Windows 8, I really haven't had many problems. It took a little bit of time, but I'm happier with it than 7 right now. I also pretty much do everything in desktop mode and don't use any of the metro apps. I actually like Metro as a Start Screen and can organize things better than I ever did in Windows 7. I can understand why some people don't like 8 but really don't get the pure hatred that it seems to generate for some.

I have a server with the same UI as well and I'll agree that the UI seems out of place at best in a server environment. I was able to do everything I needed to without much trouble I guess but it did not help matters any either.
 
Gahhh...! Windows 8 in a corporative environment?! That's just nuts, way too time consuming, and therefore, expensive.

Everyone has a different opinion about what does and doesn't work for them, but just like I grumble to heatlesssun sometimes, they're opinions and everyone should be allowed to have and express them.

I don't think there's really anything wrong with Windows 8. I'm not at all excited about the UI and, I guess after using it on different occasions, I can safely say I don't like much about Modern UI. It's okay, it was easy enough to learn, but it doesn't make me happy to use my computer. Old UIs didn't really make me happy either, so it's really just more of the same.

Despite all that, if someone asks me in person, I totally bash it and complain, bemoan it, and whine about it just because it's super fun to have a part in messing up something that a company is trying to accomplish at a critical time when they need the breathing room to sort of diversify and change with the market's tablet/touch fad. I don't even really have anything at all against Microsoft or what they're doing with Windows 8, but OMG causing chaos and disorder is the best thing ever and sooo worth it to get non-technical peoples mega angry and upset about how that evil software company took something away from them that their sense of entitlement commands the world to let them keep. :p
 
I trained my mom how to use Windows 8 in about 1 hour and she is 73. I really worry for the future if people who browse this forum are being outpaced by somebody who still thinks a 3.5" disk is a "hard disk" because of the shell.

Why are you pretending like everyone is can't comprehend Windows 8? You obviously know the reason why no one wants it and it has nothing to do with being impossibly hard to train people.

He is not pretending, people are actually claiming it is really hard to train people on how to use it. But, trying to take his argument to the absolute extreme is usually a tactic used when your own point of view on the subject can be seen as weaker.

He is pretending. Did you not read his post? Being dense on purpose, "worrying for the future", and making it seem like people on this forum are less tech savy than is 73 year old mother is pretending.
