Crysis 1 - so easy to forget this game was made in 2007

Such a great game.

jadams, would you mind sharing your graphics mods? I lost mine and can't seem to come across any on the net.

I just recently played through Crysis Warhead (it was in the Steam backlog!) and it amazes me that the game was released in 2008. Consoles really have held us back for so long.

Of course!

I prefer vanilla, personally.

People also don't realise how many pioneering effects it pulled off.
When people say "Unoptimised" it's is a bit of a harsh statement.

Fun too! I used to play it on low for ages.

When people still act like it is still the best graphics it's a bit long in the tooth. Crysis 3 does look better. (and it should)

Man I remember struggling with my 2x 8800gtx's in SLI to play this game.

Crysis should go down as one of the greatest of all time. I still play it from time to time. At the time this was out, I couldn't afford a good card so I was playing this with a 9600GT at 1024x768 haha!

warhead looked like crap in comparison to crysis 1.. to be honest consoles really haven't been holding us back if you really look crysis. you start to notice all the little tricks they did to make the game look good from a distance but the second you walk up to something and look at it close up(using the original engine) it's the same crap every other game looked like at the time.

now if only they invested the time and energy they put into the graphics into actual game play then sure it could of been one of the greatest games of all time..

Crysis was not the best optimized game in the world, and you can feel it today with the best hardware some places just dip way too low, and yes Crysis 3 does look cleaner and has flashier stuff in it.

Anyway as for Crysis I have both a love and hate relationship with it, from the moment it came out in 2007 untill 2009 I did not stop upgrading my pc just to run this game, not to play it just to boast that I can run it today I feel so stupid wasting all that money but well that's what we do aye ?

that's not the "engine" causing that. the textures weren't the highest quality but modders released hi-res texture packs and Crysis developed and maintained a public forum as a hub for mod development and release.

It can be tough to run maxed out with todays hardware so yes i would consider that unoptimized...

It was one of the last of the true system killers ... that used to be the measure of the AAA shooters ... whether they could bring your system to its knees and have it crying like a little girl ... the console crossovers have pretty much ended those days unfortunately ... I still remember their original tech demo X-Isle (that later became Far Cry) ... ah memories :D

I don't forget. It makes me nostalgic for what was a better more fun time in my life. Back then I used to wake up around 10AM, play games all day, hang out with friends at night and then back to gaming until the early morning. I miss 2007.

Does this game work on Win8 now? I bought it a while back (never played it) and it wouldn't run. Googling, I wasn't the only one having problems.

I'd love to give it a shot, but I have such a backlog that I didn't bother spending too much time trying to figure it out (a few hours, tops).

Game looks good, I never played it though. I tried a year back and couldn't get the game to run in windows 8 so I gave up.

I look on Crysis as a case of unfulfilled potential. A game with amazing graphics and a good first half that became too linear as it went on. The sequels were a complete disappointment that butchered the storyline and had uninspired linear gameplay, and were clearly aimed at the consoles.

Im the kinda person that If I can't get 60fps on a FPS I don't play it til after a couple generation of videos cards have been released.

I finally played Crysis back 2011 with 2 5870s. I played it on high settings and I loved it. I brought me back to the feeling when I played Far Cry for the first time. Personally I like Crysis a little bit more then Half-Life 2. I didn't have same opinion for Crysis 2, I thought that was a disappointment.

Warhead was a good game. Crysis 2 nearly put me to sleep it was so boring. Fantastic soundtrack though.

Yep one of my favorite games of all time epesically shooters.and i too had a 9600gt grabbed another one in mid 08 to run in sli so i could run at native 1680..yep good times.:)

Loved the original and even Warhead. You felt like a Predator, cloaking, running up to soliders, grabbing them by the throat, tossing them off a cliff and then just for the hell of it doing some target practice on the poor sob's on the way down.

Good times.

Crysis was a good product with really amazing graphics.

Open world FPS is probably the easiest thing to do. Just make a big fucking map, place a few bad guys around and tell dumb people you provide them with so much options of hiding in the bushes. MP is even easier on them.

And yet, it's still the best looking game. Fuck that, man. The state of the industry is just pathetic.

I agree with the Graphics comments, Crysis still looks great today without mods..... Not trying to derail the thread but just wanted to mention that Age of Conan was similar graphics wise for being about as old, most impressive i've seen in an MMO, it's ashame AoC was released too early and had no 'end game' that would have kept me playing.....

Wow, amazing this thread was just started. I recently purchased both Crysis 2 & 3 over Christmas and I started playing through the first 2 games again last week to get the story fresh in my mind. Just finished the first last night and started playing through Crysis Warhead.

My third custom system build stemmed from wanting to play the first Crysis. I got a pair of 8800GTX cards and SLI'd them. In addition I got an Intel Core 2 QX6700 that I overclocked to 3.06 GHz and 4GB of DDR2-1066 memory. The game ran on High settings and no AA with framerates in the 35-50 range in DX10 64-bit mode @ 1600x1200 :D. When I played through the game on my latest build with a stock i7 4770k and GTX 780 with 16GB of memory, it's running 70-100 FPS with everything on Very High with 4x AA @ 1920x1080. It's interesting that on both systems the memory usage never went above 1231 MB.

Those textures mods in the OP look great. That did strike me when seeing how "low" quality the textures were when I started playing it again. I even double-checked my settings to make sure they were set to Very High. It's okay, though. You're not really paying attention to the details when things pick up later in the game. I will say that I think Crysis still has the best underwater effects of any game to-date. In my opinion, of course ;).

Good times, indeed. Ever since my "Crysis" build I don't think I could ever go back to mid-range hardware. You could say I became [H]ard after that point .

Yeah, Crysis and Far Cry are still two of my favorite games. The level of freedom I feel on the way I approach a situation and having to choose my weapon mods, and tactics really immersed me in the games even if the story was complete shit. Crysis and Far Cry was a perfect textbook example of gameplay trumping over everything. Some people would argue that it's just another run and gun, but it depends entirely on how you play it. I still fire it up time to time because there were so many subtle things that made the game great and immersive, like the "god rays", using brush and bushes for cover actually works, shooting trees breaks them where you shoot them, the excellent bump-mapping textures used on the ground made it look real, underwater sun refraction, and so many other effects were added... Crytek raised the bar real high and I think in many ways Crysis keeps that bar in terms of environmental detail, and FPS gameplay. Even Far Cry to me with it's cheesy voice-acting and shit story is still thoroughly enjoyable to play.

If Crytek could do anything for the gaming community, it would be to remake Far Cry in the Crysis 3 engine. That would be so fucking epic.

On a side note, I am really hoping MGS 5 from what I have seen so far really achieves the open-world combat it is aiming for and i'm really looking forward to it.

First, Crytek was like:

Then, Crytek was like:

Lot of progress in 3 years don't you think? Far Cry released in 2004. Crysis in 2007.

It can be tough to run maxed out with todays hardware so yes i would consider that unoptimized...

Giving what they were building upon I still think it is a harsh statement.

2007, no?
Volumetric light, volumetric smoke, subsurface scattering, massive poly counts, environmental physics, intense particle effects, per pixel object motion blur, soft shadows on everything, ssao... They invented ssao ffs.
Everything was new.

For example:
Games like AC4 I would consider unoptimised.. It's new. Technology has had thorough development. It runs like crap and doesn't look mindblowing.

This man has used this thing us humans have.. the so-called "thought process" in a correct manner. +1 good sir

I'm very sorry but I wasnt taking note to which mods I was downloading, but heres a snapshot of my .pak folder. Hopefully you can deduce which mods are which. But I got most of them from the overclockers.net thread.

Warhead was more of an add on to the original than a sequel,I enjoyed it mainly because Psycho was my favorite character. Why they didn't use him as the protagonist in 2 and 3 instead of that whining head case Prophet is beyond me.

If you have issues running Crysis in a new OS, try running it in compatibility mode. I think Vista SP2 is the one that works.
It's also wonky with displays that support 1080p/24. Something about Crytek's engine triggers 24hz. In Crysis 1 you can fix it by starting a game and hitting ALT+Enter rapidly 7-8 times. In Warhead there is no easy fix although you can create a faux resolution like 1920x1079 to get around it with certain drivers.

As for the game, it's okay. The first 65% is open world and similar to Far Cry. The last 35% is totally on rails and is about as fun as Superman 64, IMO.

A lot has been made of Crysis still being the best looking game out there. I think the people that believe that are too hung up on engine features that players don't necessarily notice unless you point it out.

On a semi related note, how is far cry 3? I had a lot of fun with the first 2.
