Not Dead Yet!! A new Dreamcast game!

Interesting

Time to plug the ol DC back in and get ready to fire it up again! :)

Hes also making a few more games, they have the teaser video for Ghost Blade in there too, which essentially looks JUST like Ikaruga, one of my all time favorite top down shooters (aside from Raptor X)

Kind of off topic but if you are a Dreamcast fan and have an android device you should check this out.

Okay, we are in the year 2014 now with the Xbox One and PS4 just releasing mere months ago, and I have 3 consoles hooked up to my TV at all times...

1. Playstation 3 = Media Server, Blu-Ray, DVD player, and Netflix.
2. Nintendo Wii U = Games
3. Dreamcast = Games

It really says something about the power the DC had that this game can get released and the fact that I still have it hooked up even though my Xbox, Playstation, and other consoles are in storage. Also, I take issue with people claiming it was a flop. Just read this quote from the gamasutra article about the rise and death of the Dreamcast I will source below it:

"On September 9, 1999, Sega released a highly advanced console with graphics far beyond what the PlayStation could do, the potential for online gaming out of the box, and a lineup of 18 games. At the inexpensive MSRP of $199.99 ($100 less than the PlayStation launch price), gamers could buy Soul Calibur, NFL 2K, Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Hydro Thunder, and Trickstyle, among others.

The system, the games, and the combined sales culminated in a remarkable moment in video game history. In 24 hours, Sega had sold more than 225,132 units (an industry record), raking in $98.4 million dollars.

Four days after launch, 372,000 hardware units had been sold, tallying $132 million. The remarkable 24-hour sales numbers put Sega in the Guinness Book of World Records at that time for most revenue generated in the entertainment industry in 24 hours, and thrilled its publishing and retailer partners."

Four of those titles in the launch lineup for the DC became some of my favorite games of all time with Hydro Thunder being my favorite arcade racer, NFL2K becoming the best NFL game franchise, Soul Calibar being one of the best fighting games, and Sonic Adventure which debateably is the best Sonic game to ever release (for me it is). All of that combined with the Dreamcast launching at $200. That's fucking crazy even by today's standards. The 3DS and PSVita launched at more than that and offer similar graphics imo. I feel as if the PS4 had a better launch lineup it could have bested the Dreamcast's record with best turnaround in gaming history. I know the PS4 had set a new record too with sales, but I was just saying in comparison to the overall launch including games. Yes, I know the DC was short-lived but with everything Sega screwed up with the Genesis and on-wards, they really tried to turn a radical 180 just like the PS4 was trying to makeup for the mistakes of the PS3 launch.

Just because the DC didn't last didn't make it a flop. And it's not just fucking nostalgia and rose-colored glasses. I had more fun on my Dreamcast than any console to date. When I first fired up the DC and played Sonic Adventure as my first game - was the most memorable moment in my gaming lifetime next to playing Goldeneye first on my N64.

The system had spectacular games, awesome price point, and debatable the best all-around console launch in history. When people think of successful console launches and how to do it right, lot of people bring up Dreamcast. Just look at the quote in my sig. I've had that there since i joined the [H] forums (somebody on here posted it I think) and is 100% true.

There have been numerous games released for DC over the past decade, but they've pretty much all been the overhead or sidescrolling space shooters.

The only time since launch mine wasn't hooked up was while my new house was being built in 06.

So where would one buy it once it is finished? I doubt they plan on releasing it in stores....

Awesome post, I agree 100%.
The Dreamcast had a certain spark that I can only compare to seeing (and hearing) a Neo Geo for the first time. The games you mention are spot on the best games I think I have ever played on any console. Hydro Thunder being the most underrated game on the system.
But lets not forget Shenmue, perhaps the most groundbreaking and wonderful game on the system.
I vowed that I wouldn't get a DC when I first heard about it, all it took was one look at a DC running Sonic to change my mind instantly.
What I wouldn't give for Sega to build a backward compatible DC2 and remaster these games. Gamers would buy it over a WiiU I bet, I know I would.
I know, it wouldn't be the same...

Mines drowned when my basement flooded in a massive octobre blizzard years ago :(. The controllers were awesome.

Agreed!
Excellent rest of post. I don't think I acquired so many game in a systems first year than on Dreamcast. Dreamcast was a first in so many ways, such incredible games, and of course online before there was any sort of online network for console games. But, the GAMES. The diversity of the Dreamcasts portfolio is insane. So much goodness and randomness. Memories.....

let me know when the rest of the series of shenmue are out. I want to avenge Ryo's father

I want Shenmue 3 as well. They should release the first two on Steam, then make the 3rd. I'd be okay with DC/Xbox 1-era graphics.

FOR THE FATHER!!!!

I want to play a new Shenmue so damn bad.

Man, all I remember from Shenmue was a mission where I had to move crates. I remember thinking to myself........what the hell am I playing?

Yeah, it sucked having a job in Shenmue but it fit the framework of the game.

I loved the gumball machine toys.

Dreamcast is still to this day my favorite console. Nothing has ever quite captured the magic that it had. First time I played Code Veronica I freaked. The graphics amazed me.
I'd love to see Shenmue 1 and 2 ported to the pc. I'm sure my SSD would cut down those damn load times.

100% agreed

Dreamcast still has a ton of games that are fun to play even to this day.

San Fransisco Rush 2049 on the Dreamcast is still my favorite racing game.
Hydro Thunder is easily my second favorite boat racing games only followed by its sequel Hydro Thunder Hurricane on the Xbox 360.
Puyo Puyo 4 on the Dreamcast is still my favorite version and favorite puzzle game.

The internet browser it came with ran faster than IE did on my Pentium 2, and the secret one that came on the Team Sonic games was much faster than that. And yes, it also supported mouse and keyboard.

Also did anyone try the leaked Dreamcast version of Half-Life? It runs better than it does on the Playstation 2, just like Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Dead or Alive 2, and many other games that were on both systems.

omfg, i wasted so much time on Phantasty star online and power stone

Sega saturn was the flop. Then they released the dreamcast not long after already releasing the sega saturn so no one who actually did buy the saturn was going to buy the dreamcast.

Just to be clear...

They will always make Dreamcast games. Not only is it easy to do, a lot of arcade still run Atomiswave, Naomi 1/2 hardware (nothing but a Dreamcast on steroids). SEGA Genesis, NeoGeo, SNES, and other old systems get games as well through this. It's rarely cheap, but it's usually good.

For me the Dreamcast was and still is my favourite console of all time. It is the one that really brought the arcade experience into the home. I still play both of mine regularly - via VGA of course.

I am currently searching for a Keyboard & Mouse so I can replay QIII properly - really struggling with the pad for some reason (probably the lack of a second analogue stick for movement). I used to be "epic" back in the day with the Rail gun. Now I can't even beat the first bot FFS!

Going to be replaying Shenmue I & II soon when I get some more time. They are absolute timesinks for me so I need to ensure I have a decent lump of time available.

It is quite amazing just how well the DC still holds up graphically when run via VGA (especially with a good scaler). Considering its specs it is quite a testament to how well developers made the most of what it had (8MB of VRAM yet we had games as detailed as Shemue....).

The only annoyance I have with the DC is that it is hitting that point where everything is becoming that little bit harder to find. Prices are also starting to creep up. Being from the UK I also have to deal with the absolutely awful Crystal cases the games come in. I almost want to buy second copies of Shenmue (I & II) to avoid damaging the mint copies I already have. (For anyone that doesn't know the PAL DC games came in stupid double sided plastic cases that break by simply opening them. I assume this was because our manuals had to have multiple languages and thus wouldn't fit in a normal CD case).

Yeah, I posted here before about the Hanzo VGA box, which is really a great deal even at $60. Considering the VGA boxes that suck are so expensive now.

I am going to start up Shenmue again this weekend and try to get through it and S2 after that.

Older games are definitely going up in price especially good and harder to find games. I will never forgive myself for the systems I sold that I wish I had back. Fortunately I never even considered selling the DC and still have a good selection of extras like extension cables and VMUs.

Looking back I wish I had never sold my original DC when I was younger. I had one of the launch models and it was absolutely mint (I am stickler for keeping everything as well).

My current "primary" DC is in near mint condition but it does have a bit of yellowing. My secondary unit is slightly more yellowed but is in "as new" condition internally (much better condition than my primary before I cleaned the latter).

On a side note I must admit that I was a little skeptical about how good the DC would look via VGA (using Scart before). Boy was I proved wrong the first time I booted it up. I know you can get past the low res textures in some games but everything just looks so clean and crisp, even on a 1080p display.

I run mine thru my old upscaling Toshiba DVD recorder at 720p. It works great. I do the same for my Saturn, Gamecube, PS1 ? 2 and my RetroN 3. The only thing I miss is the use of a lightgun.

I bought a DC on launch and sold it a few years later due to moving/needing money. Just re-purchased a DC a few weeks ago and it's great to play these games again. Dreamcast has some of the most unique games and has great arcade power graphics. Any multiplatform games also on ps1/n64 look a million times better on dreamcast.

Could you tell me more about the upscaling DVD recorder?

Sega saturn was the flop. Then they released the dreamcast not long after already releasing the sega saturn so no one who actually did buy the saturn was going to buy the dreamcast.

It didn't have to be. The Japanese library for the Saturn was amazing. Tons of great games, and home of arcade-perfect Capcom ports (requires the 4MB RAM cartridge though). I love both consoles as much as each other, and I could never choose one or the other. It's like answering the question "Who is your favorite child?" :D

SEGA's old business plan was always to take their arcade systems and neuter them a bit to turn them into home systems.

The SEGA Dreamcast, Sammy Atomiswave, SEGA Naomi, and SEGA Naomi GD ROM are all essentially the same damn thing. The Naomi's are often beefier on RAM, and the Atomiswave is modular (light gun support, modem, ect) but it's the same damn thing just tweaked a bit.

It was a great plan as it allowed anybody who pushed an arcade machine on SEGA hardware to bring it over to the console instantly. Nintendo and Sony have tried this, and met with varying degrees of success. But anything Namco in the arcade is running on a roided up PS2 (hence all the Sony exclusives from Namco, they can't be assed to port to other systems).

The current SEGA boxen is the SEGA Nu. Comes with an i3, 4gb, 650ti 1gb, 64gb ssd, and 500gb HDD.

Man, I need to get a VGA adapter for the dreamcast now, I am still using scart.
