Tesla owners can finally drive from coast to coast...sorta. If you live on the west coast you can drive to the east coast in an oddball, indirect manner (and vice versa). If you live in the rest of the country, you're stuck making local trips until 2014 - 2015.

Yup and the average owner has two other vehicles. Glad they can try and keep themselves in the news, didn't Elon Musk say last year they get too much attention? Oooh he meant negative attention.

I think there are more telsa stations then there are telsa cars in existance, so this shouldn't be too big of a problem

I mean if there is a surge in popularity of Tesla vehicles, and they don't address the charging station capacity

Is it me, or is that a weird pattern? Like you're supposed to drive that or something.

Well if you take a home charging station + the public stations, then maybe.

That said, lets bring on the electric car hate!

As someone who lives in South Dakota, WHY THE FUCK are they going through South Dakota? Is energy cheaper here? Tell you one thing for sure, that section of I90 is best to not run out of power on...

We'll see how they do with the cost of model x and beyond. If they can get their costs down having a nationwide network to recharge their cars will be a boon to their business model and may even force the other manufacturers to adopt their charging standard.

One of those rare double fails, where if the statement is a joke it's a failure because it's not funny, and if it's serious, it's just stupid.

I know there is a lot of stations with electric charging stations in Vancouver, bc. Tried with Hydrogen and failed (Living by a testing station in North Vancouver). Just takes a lot of power to make hydrogen.

The purpose of this is so it doesn't take 2 weeks to cross the country in a Tesla. While the Volt can cross it in the same time as a gas car because it becomes a gas car under that situation. Part of a squabble between the egos of Lutz an Musk..

I-80 Supercharging stations aren't coming until 2015, so this was probably the easiest way to get through Chicago. I-70 stations are coming this year and will make the cross-country trek much easier.

Such a waste of time and money for a niche car that still normal people cannot even buy unless you live in a state where it is 70 degrees all the damn time. I wish this company would just go under like they should have in the past if it wasnt for the governments money. Gas will always been king to people who travel a lot, and why would anyone want to travel that screwed up route anyways ?

Isn't that what they said about rail roads? then highways? screw route 66?

This is just a natural progression, eventually the charging stations are going to be everywhere and this extremely dimwitted and petty "OMG you can only drive WHERE?" argument will vanish into thin air as the rest of society is cruising right past you

It's not very [H] to hate on technological innovation is it?

You sound stupid when you talk.

From the Pacific NW, the first part of that journey makes sense about 9 months out of the year. Through the upper Midwest, not so much. They need a I-40 route, and a Seattle-Boise-SLC-Denver route pretty badly.

Cool thanks for the info, im sure this electric care works wonders in a state that has a true winter season because its electric batteries dont drain faster in cold do they? Not to mention buying any electric car to save money on gas you will never return your investment into that car since most people dont keep there cars longer then 10 years anymore. Gas engines 30 years ago were getting 30/40 mpgs one would think with today's tech a plain basic gas car could achieve more mpgs then 30 years ago.....

yea, with no crumple zones, no airbags, no seatbelts, no cat converter, no electronics, and producing NOx emissions out the ass. Gas engines are a dead end and I'd rather have companies like Tesla pushing the boundaries. IDGAF that its 100k... tech trickles down. You can get ABS, Nav, automatic parking, bluetooth etc on a ford focus these days because the mercedes S class paved the way.

You have no fucking idea what you're talking about. Not even a tiny bit...

Seriously? Two stations in the ass end of south Minnesota but still no Tesla dealership up here? Thanks dudes.

That 30-40mpg figure was also with super inefficient carbeurators as well. Some models maybe even had a very primitive fuel injection system.

For those saying that ServerKing has no idea what he is talking about, I beg to differ.

First car I owned was a 1980 Pontiac Sunbird with a 151ci 4 cylinder engine. I had to rebuild that engine before I was able to even drive the car. Once I had it on the road, I had to get the emissions test done. It passed emissions better than brand new cars that had a bunch more useless emissions equipment on them.

And to top it off, I modified the engine for more power and better fuel efficiency.

It was also carbureted.

On newer cars, the emissions equipment sucks a decent amount of power AND fuel efficiency as does the horribly inefficient stock air intake setups.

The engines are de-tuned on purpose as well.

Gimme a newer somewhat fuel wise efficient engine and it is not very hard at all to have it output more power, get better fuel efficiency AND output fewer emissions without much of the stupid emissions equipment that came stock.

But people are too uneducated about how to keep their cars running properly these days, so everything has to be automated, which is not very efficient at all.

Back in the day, you would need to make adjustments to compensate for the different seasons. Now days, everything is just controlled though a computer which is a pretty poor judge of what the settings actually need to be because it has to cover such a wide range of variables automatically.

Using an aftermarket computer that you actually have to program is a much better way to do it. There are even some aftermarket systems out now that continuously auto tune, and can do a pretty good job of it.

Nothing like planning you road trip based on where you can plug in your car.

Would have been out of luck on the road trip we took through the Utah area visiting several national parks.

Ah look the usual Tesla haters. Why do people on a computer technology forum hate technology so much?

If we had listened, in the past, to the defeatist we would still be travelling around by horse and buggy.

It's not hate to point out the problems with EV's.

Expensive, limited range, long charging times, heavy, prone to fires when hitting road debris, drivers don’t pay any gas tax to maintain the roads they are driving on, etc.

My problem has more to do with the people who push EV’s as the best solution for everyone (not even close), expect free charging stations (so someone else can pay for their electricity) and that we just need more government subsidies (read $ taken from middle class taxpayers).

Why are we giving thousands in tax credits to rich people so they can buy $100,000 cars?

You're a technology enthusiast. Think of the rich people as the early adopters and high end hardware geeks. They get it first and as the processes get cheaper and they ramp up production, it comes to the masses. In a few years Tesla is slated to release a cheaper model.

The fossil fuel companies have a vested interest in keeping us using gasoline and the deep pockets to see to that interest. The government's tax credits and green energy investments are a way of assisting companies like this in fighting against those giants.

Are EV's as they exist today the perfect solution for all people? No. No car is. But you have to look at the potential. Its a high end product created with new technology. At the beginning its going to be rare and super expensive and highly specialized in its use. It won't be that way forever. Computers used to take up entire rooms. Now I have one the size of a tissue box under my TV.

I assume fire extinguishers are also made available at these locations?

Why are we giving thousands in tax credits to rich people so they can buy $100,000 cars?
For the same reason we give a tax credit to anyone else to buy any other type of electric car, for the same reason we gave tax credits to hybrids, and to alternative fuel vehicles like CNG. It's a way to try to spur the market to push these vehicles out there and to spur innovation in the next version (hopefully better). The idea to reduce overall fuel consumption, overseas need for energy, etc.

You can't pick and choose which brands of electric car are eligible based upon who can buy it, you either offer it for all or not at all. And judging by the number of people with Escalades, or Lexus SUVs, more than just rich people are spending just as much money on other cars.

Glad to see Tesla charging stations in Texas but still a shame that you can't buy one directly there.

Gas engines aren't dead.
Its the internal combustion engine that's inefficient.
Gas turbine engines (more like powerplants connected to electric motors) are simpler, easier to maintain and provide better fuel efficiency, plus they can run on almost anything that can burn instead of just petrol.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Turbine_Car
The concept was sound, but the turbine to mechanical transmission couldn't accelerate as fast as an electric motor or ICE connected to a mechanical transmission.

Jaguar is looking like they might have something special on their hands, a gas turbine powerplant/ battery system hybrid system.
