I have a feeling that a lot of people are going to be jumping ship once they see the annual pricing model.

Pricing:
2 PCs - $99/yr
5 PCs - $250/yr
10 PCs - $450/yr

I use OpenVPN/SSH for my home network, but LogMeIn was very convenient for tech support on friends/family.

I don't feel like setting up a VPN is practical for say fixing my grandparent's mac mini (who also use an apple router). It could be a good excuse to drop a Pi on their network.

And yes, there is a thread for similar: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1282558

I see a lot of new Teamviewer users in the near future. Web interface is ok when you can't use the client, and it's not difficult to get setup for helping friends/family.

Just saw the email. Damn you LogMeIn.

After a quick search, I'll give teamviewer a try.

Any other recommendations that work with mobile phones?

Does this apply to existing free computers?
Yup.

Fuckers. I don't mind them yanking the service; it was free, after all. We were all leaching. But the manner in which they're pulling this bullshit pretty much guarantees I'll never give them a cent. Businesses are all about reliability and stability; pulling the plug with this kind of short notice is a dick move and does not suggest the company has a dependable decision making process.

MANNNN....and I was going to setup my HTPC with logmein, too. Crud.

Is the VNC scene still pretty much UltraVNC and RealVNC?

*edit* I actually read the post, and it says Central users won't be affected. So our 50+ workstations will be included for the 300$/year. So not bad for a small business, but screws the home users. I'm surprised they didn't go ad based on the free version... I'm sure they could generate more than 100$/year with that.

I'm sitting here in a training class and there is someone from another partner who mentioned they have over 700 customer machines on LMI free. they're so screwed hahaha.

For those who need a free solution and don't need all the bells and whistles, Teamviewer is pretty awesome.

LOL! WOW! Talk about digging yourself into a hole. Being burned by free services too many times myself I know to never get carried away to avoid situations like this where I now depend on it.

Pretty dickish move among the crazy annual prices. I could only say stick it to the man by switching to TeamViewer, which is pretty damn solid comparisons wise, because you KNOW they're going to backtrack a little. Don't fall for it. Switch and don't look back. Whoever came up with this way of going about it should be fired.

I second TeamViewer. We've been using it for two years. I dnot believe there is per machine pricing

How's that possible? They limited free accounts to 10 PC's about a year ago.

I don't know where you are seeing $99 a year for 2 pc's. From what I read it is $50 a year for 2 pc's, which I think is too much as well. If they wanted to actually keep free users they should make it $50 a year for the 10 pc's previously allowed with the free version. I would actually consider that. As it stands I've already deleted the few pc's I had using it and will consider other options.

Are there free solutions out there where you can run your own server? I use Logmein for certain repeat people where I have to help with their computers, such as my parents, and it's always bugged me that I have to rely on an external service because of the fact that it can be taken away.

$99 a year w/ 2 PC's for new users
$49 the first year for existing users and $99 thereafter.

Everything should be free!

Maybe someone should give me free beer, i'd like that.

So a bunch of people who abused the free logmein are now going to head on over to Teamviewer and abuse the free version of that.

What if customer didn't pay the companies you work for?

Why people are upset about this is beyond me there is a million ways you can connect to multiple PC's for free, it's not rocket science, and if you are in technology you should.... Know how to already do this.

I get some people are not technology inclined but generally these people pay for products as they should, like everyone complaining should. :D

I was kinda pissed until I read about LMI Central being unchanged. I use it quite a bit for work and have 30 accounts under our account, all using LME Free. Looks like I should be OK.

However, I do not agree with this. It's not like providing even 10 computers costs LogMeIn anything, and to be honest there's no way we'd be using LMI Central without me having used the general free account for personal use first. Yeah it's only $250/year but still.

Another vote for TeamViewer. Seems to work quite well every time I've used it. Not as cumbersome as LMI, as far a I'm concerned. I actually talked one of our lowest-functioning users through installing it in less than 5 minutes.

I used this a lot with family just because it was easy.. I would pay 50 bucks a year for 10 pc's but not 100 for 2 that's just crazy...

Time to try TeamViewer. I don't use it often enough to justify $100/year, but it's convenient for occasional usage.

They announced it today, they pulled the plug today. High costs. That's why.

Give it 30 day notification, so people can either pay or switch. Lower prices to where those free users could actually afford or try and justify the cost.

Wow. Looks like I won't be affected since I only have 50 computers (Central) on my account right now, but that seriously sucks for people that have more. Add in the instability of the company and their lack of tact when announcing the change.... Looks like I will be taking my business somewhere else in March.

I guess no one read that this DOES NOT apply to LMI Central users. Pay the $235 for central if you use it for support, period.

I guess you didn't bother reading that it actually does affect central (Central accounts with more than 101 computers), just look at their new pricing model for it.

Also why would you stay with a company that is giving people seven days days to basically vacate from their services? The lack of providing customers a longer notice (ie. 30 days) and their continued declining financials paint a picture of the company collapsing. Get out while you can.

That's what happens when you go public. Suddenly they have a whole new set of people that they answer to. Many tech companies in the future are going to go bankrupt because investors and shareholders are flat out running companies into the ground. Their R&D budget just looks insane, or they are somehow "hiding" profit with a suddenly 4x normal increase.

This is a good change in my opinion. It gives the other companies a chance to compete in a market that LogMeIn free basically cut them all out of.

Now someone just has to fill the void. Teamviewer is $800 for a license, while its awesome, its not something you'll be flocking to probably if $100 a year pains you.

ScreenConnect, SplashTop, and many others can fill this void and make a lot of money doing so. But I laugh at those thinking $100 a year is expensive for that. GoToMyWallet(tm) wanted $35 a month for 1 tech for me. So thats 4 times what LMI is asking.

Its a good product, that deserves to make money.

Where do you see that? its not reflected on the central page, and the FAQ http://help.logmein.com/SelfServiceKnowledgeRenderer?type=FAQ&id=kA0a0000000shH8CAI states that central customers will not be affected.

Yes I saw and read through all of their FAQs; they "claim" that Central users will not be affected, however when you go to the Central purchase page you will now see a tiered structure depending on how many computers you have on your account.

They will feel the impact from this when IT guys who opted to use LogMeIn because of their positive experience with it decide to go with alternate solutions due to the royal screwing that occurred.

And this is exactly why they are doing this, you don't think they can track all this

it is the same with TeamViewer and its personal usage vs business usage, they can tell and will eventually crack down on people for it.

i logged into 4 PC's with in about 20 mins and i got a warning message that it appeared i was using Teamviewer for business purposes.

Log me in just shot themselves in the foot with this pricing model. They should have made it so a large volume at a low price made them money but someone is greedy there. 10 pc's for $450? that is quite a bit for the average home that has close to 10 PC's.

For a business user that is not alot of money but I am not going to pay that.

if you have the avg home, you RDC into one system and RDC to others or use a VPN...

i wouldn't even see the purpose of needing to use any 3rd party tools while in your own home to connect to your own computers on your own LAN.,

Even outside, if i had 10 computers at home i cant see why i would need to logmein say from work to all 10 at any given time....

I am sure logmein has done some research on their product usage and didn't just pull some random number out of their butt's, they can likley see how many system are behind X IP address and so forth and how many single users are clearly using it for business purposes.

Odd, I guess we will see, I have a mix of free and pro LMI in LMI Central and it all works great, its not my only remote management tool, but is one of the smoothest and most consistant thats for sure.

I use Hamachi + RDC for personal stuff and remoting into one client.
At work we have our VPN + RDC, as well as GoToManage for offsite support issues that come up.

I guess this is kind of a reason to be upset but! It was free, it was going to happening at some point.

A 7 to 30 day notice would be good but I also do not feel bad for people who stuck hundreds of machines or even 50 machines on the free version, that is taking advantage of a business plain and simple.

If you manage that many machines anyways you should really be paying for something even if it is not logmein.

I doubt Logmein cares if all the free people go away, it has been around long enough to establish itself as a tool that works. Which is why the majority will probably end up paying for it. I already pay for it so I am not going to complain, not that I care for there pricing model but the thing works, so does Teamviewer but it has less features at the end of the day. I will be replacing my Logmein setup with a Bomgar soon anyways, not that this is cheap but I will save money overtime.
