SimCity V (2013) - screens/artwork and information

Wow, so first they say "offline is not possible" and then X months later, after everyone believes the game is shit, come out and say they had been "waiting so long" to announce offline mode.

There is no  big enough.

Dumb Pedestrian / Traffic Fix Mod
Subway Stations / Underground Commuter Mod
Jetson City Mod

Its bad, I was a very staunch supported or SimCity when it was initially announced and also during the first few weeks of its release, but I am also in the too little to late crowd now. I wish they had decided to do this months earlier, when they could have saved face in the first place.

I bought it and enjoy it. The game isn't bad. It's not as good as Sim City 4, but it's not terrible. It's just one of those games that people love to hate. Just try and snag it for a decent price during an Amazon or GMG sale.

Online only and not being able to save freely was one of the biggest gripes, and that's finally been fixed. The only big gripe that still exists now is city size, and yeah, they are small, but the game isn't ruined by it. People just really like bitching about it.

Did they ever fix the resource deals between neighbors not working?

In your opinion. My opinion is the exact opposite. It is ruined by it. It's a deal breaker.

Want to make a green city (solar, wind, etc) on an island/shoreline/river map with distinct downtown (i.e. high density) areas and low density areas with a large electronics industry and a great university?

Tough shit. You essentially can't. Probably can't even really do it on a completely flat map where you can use 100% of the space. Those maps are small enough, but add in some topography and water and the maps are just laughably small. It's maybe technically possible to do the above but you'll end up with so little C/R/I that it doesn't even feel like a decent sized town, let alone a city.

I fired the game up to give it another chance, after not having played since a couple weeks after launch, and I just cannot get into the game because the maps are so small. I can't even remotely do anything that I want. I started a city intending it to be a mix of Vegas and island resort and even farming out every single utility (which seems like it's only really possible if you're using a private region since who would want to make a crappy city around supplying utilities to other cities based on the pittance (from what I've seen) you get paid for them) I still end up with a tiny little boring city. It seems like you've essentially got enough room for something roughly Vegas Strip sized and then some tiny residential areas and a small airport and that's about it.

And things still aren't all fixed in terms of bugs, and from what most people are saying (even EA apologists) the expansion back rebroke a lot of things that had previously been fixed.

They put a lot of neat stuff in the game, but a lot of that neat stuff is MASSIVE (e.g. fully upgraded university, fully upgraded city hall/mansion/whatever they're called, the electronics/oil/whatever specific buildings, fully upgraded airport, etc), and then they give you little pissant maps to put it all in.

I understand if some people "enjoy the challenge" of trying to do a lot with a little and work around the horribly small maps. I'm not one of them.

I personally don't understand why they limited the maps so much. This small detail, kinda derails the game for me...

Yeah, I'm not a fan of those who defend bad design decisions by saying it was done for the added difficulty.

Similar with the XCOM reboot, I really enjoyed it, but after a while I began to question some of the mechanics they implemented (being forced to choose countries to defend, the restrictive inventory system, gamey satellite mechanic, no defending your base from attacks, etc.) but when I bring up these points in the Steam community forums, the die hard fanboys derided me because apparently I'm supposed to enjoy being artificially handicapped. /rant

While I haven't followed developments and discoveries since the first month or so of the game's launch, I believe the reason for limited size is due to the AI that the population uses. Citizens do not have a designated home or job, they just flow into the nearest openings during transit without respect to each other. During morning transit all of your workers start by going to job opening one and continue there until it is filled, once its filled, they immediately redirect to job two until its filled and so on and so forth. In the evening, they do the same thing going back into the homes. So citizen one living in house one may commute to job one in the morning but return to house 52 in the evening and then go to job 108 the next morning and home 98 that evening.

So much for a city simulator

I don't understand, how at any point at the design/development phase this was considered a good idea. This just seems to be me like some extremely un-experienced designer/programmer that went for the absolutely most lazy solution to the "problem" of assigning jobs. There is no logic, not even a "if X lives in high class area, X goes to Y high class job building". Absolutely baffles my mind.

Ya, that's been the general consensus among everyone....very lazy AI programming.

Especially given how successful the prior games were...despite the fact that the gamees weren't actually computing the lives of individual sims.

Yeah and it seems to compound the issues. Bad traffic pathfinding is made worse by the wonky non-sense relations for RCI and the faux homes/work places where sims all just charge at the nearest home or job every day rather than living and working the same place like... a real city? Pretty much Sim Homeless Shelter & Temp Agency.

The main thing I don't understand about that decision was...how many people were actually asking for a per-Sim level simulation? Sure, it's a nice idea, but it was lazily implemented and no doubt came at the expense of less features and smaller maps.

I think people mainly just wanted SimCity 4 with better graphics and without the performance issues.

People wanted a modern city simulator, not a water simulator which is what the AI of this game is. Properly simulating human behaviors is necessary when simulating a city because a city is merely a collection of people living and interacting nearby. Look at the different mechanics of the game, we have fire departments, police departments, and specialized venues for entertainment, among other things. These buildings serve to satisfy human needs...we don't like our shit on fire, we don't like people fucking with our shit, and we want to be entertained. Why the hell do I need entertainment when I should get plenty of it by living in a different home every day. Why should I worry about people stealing stuff when I don't actually own anything, I may end up in the house with all the stuff tomorrow, and why the hell does fire concern me, ill have a new home the next day.

Hasn't happened yet...and this is not a game that inspires anyone with the skills to do it to even bother.

Yes it did. Someone created larger map borders like 3 weeks after it was released, you just couldn't save your city.

Unfortunately, I have moved on now from SimCity which is a shame. Cities in Motion XL and SimCity 4 will suffice for me until we have a proper successor to SimCity 4.

Pretty accurate there. We all wanted a CITY simulator, not a water flow simulator which is a very apt description of the AI. Sad thing is, they didn't even get that right considering how much they dumbed it down.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE
You thought one beloved series being destroyed was enough?
WRONG
