Change in BA requirements

Better question - when was the last time you saw Kendrak post in the DC section?

Hmm.

/me looks

Last post anywhere, 11-23-2013, 01:22 AM; last DC post, 09-02-2013, 03:01 PM.

Point taken.

I still like my idea from irc yesterday, everyone switch to SMP and run the servers dry, I reckon we could do that in about 3-4 days. in the meantime no BA work would get done

I could do this for awhile ;)

I wouldn't mind doing it but I'm tied up in the WCG Christmas Race on my 4P... I'd have to wait until Christmas day to start.

There's over 200,000 SMP WUs waiting to be assigned according to the server status page, and that's just the current gens. There's got to be tens of millions of WUs to get to the end of the all those runs. Even with a very coordinated effort, I don't think the folding community is going to run them dry anytime soon.

Lets not reward stupid...

If they rewarded better than I'd switch, but why when I'm not getting even close.

Though my i7 950 @4.0Ghz right now is getting 32k ppd on wu10084.

I would be willing to do SMP if the points offset the loss on my GPU clients AND returned a respectable PPD/W. Unfortunately SMP by itself is a pretty worthless endeavor compared to GPU and BA's PPD/W and when you take into account the net loss on the GPU's its even worse. I wholeheartedly agree with Patriot in the sense that if this change to BA is all they do, they're cutting off the nose to spite the face. If they incentivize switching to SMP, then they'll get all the no-longer eligible BA systems now running SMP, AND a whole bunch of people lighting up their CPU's who leave them idle right now

This seems simple to solved.. If the needed work is SMP, just ramp up the points. 3x the points for SMP for the month of January or until the work load balances.

At the end of the day, what does this cost them? I mean, it's not like I can trade my 500M folding@home points for a Chipotle Burrito?

Ahhh but here at the [H] you could trade it for a Tamale :D

Where is that damn tamale truck

that does seem too simple -- and makes too much sense :)

...or they could just ask some kind of informal group of representatives of donors to ask their respective teams to do a push for SMP for the next month or two. They could call it a Donor Advisory Board or something similar and possibly even seek their input as well.

Excuse me guys.
[SARC]
Don't you people realize that just because we spend shit loads on our folding HW and shit loads on our power bills to run them 24/7 and crap loads of time keeping them running beyond peak performance, (just so they die hard and young), that we have no idea how best to motivate ourselves for a particular effort? Just get over it. Pande knows exactly what we like and we will damn well like it![/SARC]

right. of course. forgot that.

Louis

PS you're going to have to get a new name after the next series of changes :)

Not only the BA units but the current absence of core17 units with the new beta core15 units halves production for no consequent reduction in utility bill :(

Did Somebody ask for tamales?

At least he confirmed he recognizes issues (which I like).

I can't give him advance credit just for that, though. Actions will tell.

If deadlines aren't changed, I will be sure to accommodate all BA-capable machines that do
meet preferred deadlines regardless of core count.
Back to the future!

Looks like classic epic clusterf... in communication.
Is this the normal state for PG and Foldingforum?

Well, 10 days and much posting later, lots of good idea's and suggestions from lots of people finally extracted a response from PG :- https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=25411&start=405#p255302

To save you the bother of visiting FF i'll translate:-

Many thanks for the 28 page thread on the upcoming changes, everything suggested was a crock of bollocks and we are not listening, We are proceeding as planned.

I seriously hope 7im is a troll.

Why indeed should the top contributors voices be heard, its not like we care about the project.

I'm the 331st highest contributor by PPD with my bigadv rig, and I have a 7990 I am going to start folding with.

But of course I clearly don't care about the project.

I think we should hold a test vote to see where we stand regard to a strike. If enough people are for we are quite much stronger if it come that far, and we are then ready and organized!

If it turns out that we are only a few that is for a strike, it has little intention of taking such a thought any further.

Make a team called "team strike" on another DC project and let's move to it. The point drops from the FAH project moved to another project, united as one team, will send a much more powerful message.

No need to do that. Just switch your gear over to the DC Commandos. They'll notice the drop. If EVGA goes to their Crunching team then PG will see the effect.

I propose this if both teams want to give it a try for a month.

What is the purpose of a strike, are people talking about a strike because of the lack of a better road map, we were told the last time that there was going to be an annual review and there may be adjustments, or something like that. I have a hard time going out on strike for something like that.
I do agree they could have done a much better job with a road map and they need a PR person, but I can not say I did not know this was coming, I just did not know when.
Within a relatively short amount of time all of todays bigadv machines will be unable to run bigadv. I know that and I am pretty sure most of us if not all of us know that. I would like to know when a close approximation of that day is though.
Anyway I would have a hard time voting to go out on strike because of that at this time, now if they do not fix there road mapping and PR problems soon that would be a reason I would do something like that.
I also would not run SMP at their current points value I would run Roseta@Home or Poem@home, (some other protein folding DC project) somewhere where I felt I had a comparative points value to equipment used.
Anyway that is my 2 cents worth on that subject.
