New build, random lockups

I built my Dad a new pc and it gets very random lockups.

Specs include:
Windows 8 Enterprise, Intel 4770, MSI H87M-G43 mobo, Corsair CX 500w psu, 2x4gb Corsair Vengeance memory, Asus 260x gpu, and a 250g samsung Evo SSD.

There's no consistency to what causes the lockups, other than it always happens during simple task or just moving the mouse after the pc has been there idle for a bit. At first it seemed related to the SSD as it happened most often when writing to the drive, however I swapped the SSD with a known working HDD I have and it still locked again. Ive ran things like heaven and vally benchmark for a good 45 minutes each and its fine the whole way through, but it will latter lock while doing something like opening a browser or downloading a file.

Iv left Bios settings stock and even reset them to optimized defaults. What should be my next step in troubleshooting?

I would think the video card and psu can be eliminated as computer runs fine under load. I think that limits it to bad ram, or mobo maybe?
 
HI Mate how sorry to hear about your lock up.

what motherboard do you have?

and do you know if it has an OLED for hardware diagnosis on the board so you can see what component is failing if any when it locks?

if you haven't already tried check event viewer http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/win8/windows8-event-viewer.htm

under event types find an error - critical warning or information ROW that happened around the time of the crash hopefully the issue will be visible here.

Also does this setup run Catalyst control centre and does CCC open? also what driver version do you have?
 
The motherboard has no error leds or error detection that im aware of. I looked through the windows logs and all I really see is stuff related to power failure which is there because of me holding the power button down to force the system off. As of now iv pulled the video card from the system and am using onboard. If it locks again ill swap the ram from my system with it.

ram would more then defo give you a BSOD not a lock up as would any overheating.

have you handled the cpu recently without anti static protection?

hardware damage could be a cause maybe a damaged cell on the ram or if you've man handled the cpu then the cpus micro structure might have been damaged by Static and every time your cpu happens to use the damaged are tada lock up.

After pulling the video card the system has yet to lock. Its ran one day off onboard video, and another off my 7970. This lead me to believe the issue is either the card it self or drivers.
 
Run it for longer a day to confirm the issue.

Well assuming it lasts a week (or whenever you can't take the onboard video any more), there is the possibility that you have a defective HD 7970. Alternatively, you might have a defective PSU that can't provide its rated load. A good working CX500 should technically be enough power for that setup but a defective PSU could cause lockups when pushed with a relatively high-end GPU.

The 7970 is pulled from my system and put into this one for testing. The 260x is what was bought for this system.
