EA Halts Development Due To BF 4 Issues

EA should just halt development altogether. I think that would be best.

It's interesting that a studio doing such high quality work on the rendering front could do such shoddy work elsewhere. I guess DICE feels that they're making investments in the places they feel stand to benefit them the most at the expense of overall reliability.

You can hardly argue it isn't working for them: you guys keep buying this stuff.

why is it EA's fault?...looks mostly like game bugs, server issues, crashes etc which are the fault of DICE

Its apparently a verified rumor that EA forced the game out early like they do everything else. It's part of their switch over to Battlefield being a Yearly franchise.

Plus didn't they have to get it out before CoD or something...

Actually no, there are statements from the CFO just a few weeks again that they are not keen on it being a yearly release.

OK, I haven't actually followed this game closely. Is it really broken or what?

Actually, two years. Check the release date. That was the plan. Alternate between MoH and BF each year like CoD does with the two different studios. Though now MoH has been canned for a while.

That being said they should have waited until it was finished.

Given BF3 and SimCity, I doubt they'll fully deliver. SC was never "fixed" (inherently broken) and BF3 it took them 6months to do anything remotely proactive against cheaters; not to mention the extremely buggy and limited battlelog at the time.

Glad I didn't pick up 4.

I think people just find it easier to hate on EA...

EA should just release an engine and a mod kit and let the community do the rest.

Ummm ... short answer. yes.

I'm honestly not sure what all is broken about it, but I've played plenty of MP just fine with maybe 2 crashes. I think the consoles might have more issues than the PC launch, although the PC version has been out longer. But I'm really not sure what all the details are. If I hadn't read about BF4 having issues, I wouldn't even know there were any.

Nope. EA makes it pretty easy for us to hate them.

The cancellation of Earth & Beyond
The dismantlement and destruction of Westwood Studios
The destruction of the beloved Command & Conquer series
The Beta launch titles (BF4) that they sell as full retail games

The list goes on.......

Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 were very buggy as well. The EA+DICE pairing has a proven track record of releasing buggy games. Now maybe BF4 is more buggy than usual - I haven't been keeping up - but it's not like the yearly schedule is the only factor in the bugs.

Well I play in a group of 5 people. And we ALL have the same issues. Sound will just completely stop working. Crashing while alt + tabbed. Crashing while in game. Crashing when maps change. And these aren't small crashes that quit you to the desktop. It freezes the computer and you have to do a hard reboot. 5 people ... all the same problems. All different hardware and operating systems ...

Then I read about all the other people with the exact same issues. So that's why I think it's broken. (Also, these are not once in a blue moon crashes. These are crashes that happen every 5 minutes and I'm not exaggerating. Think how frustrating it would be to crash every 5 minutes and have to reboot your computer just to play a game. They even acknowledge it's broken ... so ....

The sad thing is it took thing long before they decided the problems were serious. Large development teams and management groups have massive problems getting their brains around "Is this a terrible or extremely flawed product or not?".

I've seen this play out numerous times. The development team doesn't want to look bad so they trivialize major issues. The lead developers and QA team know their isn't enough time so they switch to phrases like "We are doing excellent work based on the schedule and resources" because no one wants to throw the red flag. The product manager only want to hear good news about how things are going. Meanwhile the bean counters at the top of the food chain keep tugging on that release date because everyone tells them things will be OK.

While all that is going on, the majority of the rank and file employees inside the company are completely aware that the games has problems. Then the game finally launches and everyone in management plays the blame game like no one knew anything about these problems. Management then bands together around "Lets work on solutions" instead of ever addressing the fact that they released numerous shit games.

Suffice it to say that DICE had a lot of reliability data coming out of the beta. Why it wasn't looked at as part of the decision whether to launch or not is probably an EA issue.

When you combine the popularity of the series, DICE's inability to deliver software at a reasonable level of reliability and EA as a publisher, it's a bad mix.

Heck that also shipped a PS4 version that corrupts saved files for damn near everyone that plays the campaign... I don't know anyone who has finished the campaign without at least one save file problem, so EA had to have known about it (see above).

Yeah, this is definitely a symptom of EA pushing the game out before it was done. I sort of understand why they did; a lot is stake with the new consoles and winning the hearts and minds of the early adopters. Of course that may have backfired for them unless they sort this out quick.

This should be an example for all publishers that it's better to be 110% sure a product is complete before you begin working working on crap like DLC.

Pretty much. The market has certainly validated the concept that releasing unfinished games for premium prices (+ Day One DLC + season passes + microtransactions) with the flaky possibility that they might be fixed 3-12 months later is fine with consumers.

so guess this means no Mantle anytime soon  was really looking forward to the benchmarks later this month

they probably had no intention of releasing it in December from the get-go...another carrot on a stick trying to get people to buy the game early (and buy a new AMD card to boot)...no early performance numbers whatsoever sounds fishy

People will get fired over this, I'm sure. Though not any of the execs who make the big bucks and bonuses.

Pretty much every game these days, with a few exceptions, is released in buggy state, since it doesn't matter, most of the money is made in pre-order and 1st week sales secured via marketing and paid reviews.

For this to happen publicly, BF4 must have been spectacularly mismanaged.

I really don't have any pity for people who have problems with their products. This company has repeatedly churned out crap for over a decade. Yet people still buy their products. So maybe EA isn't the problem after all....

Maybe its the consumer.

With SimShitty, NBA Live and now Battlefield 4, EA is well and truly on the way to winning Worst Company in America for a third consecutive year.
