Disclaimer: I am just posting a link to this so we can all have a good laugh (for obvious reasons). :D

Called the XDNA Aurum 24K, the PC actually retails for £7979 in the UK, and if you paid attention in school you’ll know that 79 is the atomic number for gold, while Aurum is latin for gold. Chemistry and latin facts aside, the PC sports an incredible specification that is likely to be blisteringly fast not just in games but at anything you can throw at it too.

13k for a luxury PC that still has the Corsair logo on the front of the case.... and "hand painted fan rings".

You're right Steve, I haven't laughed this hard about tech in a while. :D

How much does that cost when you build one yourself? Seems like a fairly steep markup.

That is not THAT unreasonable for a total custom build that also includes a full warranty . This is coming from someone who is paid to do commissioned builds. Granted, my builds would have been air-brushed (my air-brusher gets paid 6-7k to paint a bike and maybe 700 just to paint a helmet).

6k nvm

4960x 1000
case 300
psu 350
sleeves 300
fans 200
titans 1800
mobo 400
64gb 400
wcs 500
ssd 400
hd 150

~$5800 give or take 500

4k monitors ( name brand ) at least would cost $1000ish

It has not one Titan but two. Ugh, someone could probably build that system for under $5k without the crappy paint job.

A pair of TITANs when the current crop of video cards (both NVIDIA and AMD) are a much better choice for a number of reasons...price being one of them.

Unless you think Seiki is name brand, you aren't getting a 4k monitor for 1k. Its gonna cost you at least 3k to get into Asus' 4k monitor.

I know the Titans are a couple grand each, but I still can't figure out why that cost's 13k.

And it's still going to be oudated 6 months from now when some new version of pixel shader or something like that comes out. :p

Is that a gynormous case or are the components that small? I know it has the false wall to hide many of the cables but still looks like a ton of room in there. I know the Titans are not exactly space saving cards.

Mark up to pay for labor and warranty.

Holy cow man! What would YOUR mark-up be on a system that is made with the same $6k in parts?

When I give a rough quote I change the same price for labor as the parts cost. Please keep in mind that is a rough estimate. If I like the project I will lower my cost in exchange for things like media exposure.

I am not saying THIS boutique has what it takes to charge as they are but I do know companies I work with and design for such as Origin PC can. Just look at the first Big O we designed and built. They did sell. There are customers around the world who will spend bank on a custom and killer rig (for some reason there are folks in places like Abu Dhabi who have money). Wish I had that kind of cash but I have to work for my rig.

Looking at that rig I say they are taking huge risks shipping a system with acrylic hard lines. While I love them they are not for a resell system that ships filled.

$13,000? HA!! How about this one for $16.500..

Comes with four-way Titan SLI, a bunch more storage (15TB), a 4K Asus PQ321, IBM Model M keyboard.. AND it is ALL beige!!

Unfortunately, this is a one off.. have to build your own.

(sorry for the big pics :( )

I don't actually know what you are saying there (I think something got lost in translation).

So a rig that costs $6k in parts you would charge $6k in labor?

Why are you not hella rich right now?

I only do builds for large companies like NVIDIA and only showcase rigs.

Yes the 900D is huge lol I have one sitting behind me in a box waiting for my new build.. The 750D I have for a customer build could almost fit in side of it lol

What would you change if you have to warranty it for 3 years and also cover the time you put into it (after swapping out the cheap green storage drives for blacks - system is two 512 gig Crucial M4s in raid 0)

If I were to sell this system I might ask 15k or so for it

Whoops, my bad. I thought you were trying to tell me this is what you charge and that they were selling well.

Unless you are P-Diddy, Donald Trump or some other moron with more money than brains, no one is paying $6k for parts + $7k for labor and warranty.

That's what makes these posts so fun and why we all laugh at them. :D

That's just it, if you could sell it for $15k you be making them hand over fist and turn it into a business and be insanely rich by now. Right? I know I would. (love that build by the way)

I get enough business to keep me (one person) busy. I do not think a company can run this business model (meaning this is ALL they sell) and stay in business and grow to be a company like MainGear or Origin PC. Those companies can offer this and charge according for the small number of high-end customers.

As I said, there are some of these customers out there and not just celebrities. Think upper income professionals who want who want a show piece in their house but they have not the time or skills to do it themselves.

To make it profitable enough to produce these I would have to charge which I why I do charge (I have many requests to do builds - I send them to Origin as I do not have the time do to lower-end builds for end customers - I am having a hard time keeping up modding part-time and teaching at a college).

I wish I could get more uber sales that did not take so much time so I could afford that laser cutter and CNC router sooner.

Hell, the average modder could easily build two of those a month (the linked system) at $12k - $14k profit. that's some pretty damn nice money for doing stuff we all love to do. :D

How do you compete with dell and other clone PC companies? I remember when I used to build PCs I found I only could make like 5-10% markup otherwise I was charging more than Dell and other clone PCs. People usually don't care about specs, they just want a computer that will open Facebook. So trying to tell them it has more memory or a faster video card will just go "Whosh" over their heads. The ones that do care know how to build their own machines. Eventually gave up as it was too much work for little return.

I don't compete I only deal with the high-end.

@Steve - that is why I only do super high-end builds for companies - I can do what I love to do and make some money doing it (plus I get to work events like CES, BlizzCons, PAX, and such). I am just an average modder who got lucky breaks.

The markup is not surprising. Ever look at mass produced computers like Dell? They likely have 30-50% margin.

Burdened rates in my industry... A $10 an hr employee ends up being 30+. Engineers are over $100/hr (normal is $150/hr for a contract job), ect. Adds up quick!

There is a decent amount of labor and risk in a water cooled rig...

I believe it's called, "Marketing to the Affluent". Yes there are people out there with a lot of money and they will spend it on stupid things you could build for under $5,000.

I'm sorry, but your eye and taste are well above average. Maybe your hands(abilities) are only average but your all encompassing image of the total product is far above that.

My guess is you just don't build this and put them in a fedex box for delivery. Throw in labor/taxes/etc and that profit probably just got obliterated.
