It looks as though OCZ will be filing bankruptcy and selling off its assets. Thanks to everyone that sent this one in.

Shares of solid-state drive technology vendor OCZ Technology Group (OCZ) remain frozen since 9 am, Eastern this morning, and the reason came across the transom just a short while ago: The company has received an offer from Toshiba (6502JP) to purchase all the company’s assets in a bankruptcy proceeding.

Ouch.. poor fools that bought the stock when it dived to .40 the other day.
 
Hmm... I better update my SSD firmware today before something disappears into the void.
 
So does this mean that toshiba will be taking over the OCZ name or rebranding OCZ tech as Toshiba name?
 
While I hate to see companies close, I dont feel sorry for them.

personal experiences with OCZ products have been bad..

warranty replacement of a failed SSD 3 times, in less than a year (every 3 months to be more precise). Final straw was the 4 week wait for the last replacement to come from China, only to have it DOA.
 
I sad for them. I've had good luck with their products.
 
I liked their stuff early on (fondly remember the VX Gold series in combo with my DFI nf4 heh), but quality and reliability just kept on getting worse and worse (had to RMA ram and ssd's a few times...)
 
i think this sucks :(

my customer service experiences from them have been nothing short of top notch - quite possibly the best i have ever had.

do keep in mind that i cannot speak for the SSD fiasco. last thing i bought from OCZ was some DDR2 memory. once i saw the nonsense that was going on, i opted for a kingston hyperx.

i always found them very easy to deal with, no hassles with cross shipping RMA's. the first ram i had was DOA and they had a new set in my hands by next day. didn't get a rebate due to the company they were using, so they sent me a cheque directly from OCZ for more than the rebate and apologized for the inconvenience.

from what i hear that kind of service didn't hold up with the SSD's.
 
Shoddy company, shoddy practices, and shoddy products. Shitty company that should have went out of business long ago.
 
With all the talk about failure rates of Xbones and PS4's, this situation with OCZ is a good example of why 1% maybe acceptable to corporations but it's clearly not acceptable to customers. And OCZ experiences a range of 1.83% to 6.7%. That's the kind of failure rates that leads to bankruptcy.

According to Tom's Hardware, you'd want to stick with Western Digital or Samsung for mechanical drives reliability, and Intel for SSDs. Intel does so good that they have 0% on some drives, and Seagate does so bad that it has nearly 9% on the Barracuda's.

Not surprised with OCZ, but I am surprised that Seagate is still in business. With the internet today, nobody wants to deal with any failure rates. Especially when it comes to data. Nothing pisses you off more then losing data.
 
No big loss. Everything OCZ made was garbage.

I had a PC Power and Cooling PSU from after PCP&C got bought out by OCZ, and it literally shot flames out of the back of my case when it died and took a lot of my hardware with it.
 
Seems like the rumor floating around the past few months of OCZ going bankrupt wasn't too far fetched. Sucks for them.

I have just taken a look at my dead HDD collection from the past 5 years & there are 2 Seagate drives in there, with the rest being made up of Western Digital's & Samsung's! There is over 100 drives in there from customers machines & I refuse to sell WD's or Samsung mechanical drives now as they have never been as reliable as the Seagate's! I can count on one hand the number of dead Seagate drives I have had in the past decade (although there was a time around 98/99 that there was a few RMA's to Seagate). If that is what "Toms" has found then that is their findings, I will speak from my own with no financial gain or bias by saying so.

I just RMA'd a NAS drive due to the fact it was fitted with WD Green drives and read/write speeds were terrible! New one being delivered tomorrow with Barracuda's which has been tested by the supplier as having R/W speeds 75% faster than the WD Green's (although I will see for myself tomorrow as I cannot see that TH).

I would put Samsung in the same league as Intel when it comes to SSDs.
 
I guess I shouldn't have procrastinated in sending in that power supply for an RMA? :eek::rolleyes:

Never cared for ocz but companies leaving the competition pool is never good for us. They are one of the reasons for lower pricing.

With that said I never recommended them either due to their rma prices being hit and miss so often.

I wouldn't be surprised, WD Green drives are not meant for speeds, they are meant for power saving.
 
Ahhh, I remember the days of old when OCZ was my first choice for inexpensive but good PC memory. Fair thee well, old friend... Wish you could have stayed.

Does this mean we will see some toshiba made PSU's now?

I dont feel bad for OCZ at all.. Too many of there products have gone TU on me for me to feel bad for them. I do like there IP going to toshiba though. Toshiba does good QC and this could open up a few more avenues for them & into the consumers hands.
 
OCZ flash drives were fine for me. Their SSD drives? A fool and their data are soon parted.

I had one lady buy 10 Seagates and 8 were DOA. I only recommend WD to my customers. I sea Seagate's Chinese shit die all the time. Their Thailand drives aren't too bad though.
 
hmm, glad I got off my butt and sorted my petrol RMA out a few weeks back.
I was dissapointed that the drive was a dud, but the RMA went through pretty easily so I can't complain to loud.

I do think them releasing product that ALL died within the warranty period was probably a bad financial move.

I'm 3 dead Barracuda's for 3. I've since switched, though.

OCZ made great RAM long ago. No idea on more recent stuff, though. Doesn't sound good.
 
They should have claimed fire or earthquake for the flash memory shortage and then hiked the prices...noobs!

They made great review kits, but peddled lower quality ICs on most customers without any part number or version change. They've been a trash company since the overc store days.
 
Sold off all of my stock with them the other month. Smart move it seems...
 
Oh, I can join in on the bashing bus...

Bought a 32GB ocz onyx SSD that is flaky. That drive never got new firmware and they told me to use some program to clean the drive. Out of lazyness I never really used the drive and wouldn't even trust it as a gaming/scratch drive.

IIRC the drive would work ok on a cold boot for about 5 minutes and while in the OS it would just hang or crash. The work around I had found was to power the system down and pull power and then remove the sata connection from the mobo and plug in again. If I did not do that the Bios wouldn't recognize the drive.

That was my first and apparently my last product from them.
 
I've only owned about a dozen OCZ products, of those only two lasted an entire year. The tech business can be a brutal meritocracy at times and OCZ didn't have many merits.
 
Only ocz product I've owned is one of the first vertex ssd 's and it's still running strong to this day. Boy, have I heard horror stories though...
 
They did it to themselves with their horribly high DOA rates on their SSDs. Samsung and Intel are the SSD kings.
 
Ha. Some guy here at work just had a pc built by his friend... i asked what type of hardware and he said:"ocz, my friend said they are a really good brand!" Thats all he knew. Couldnt tell me amd or intel.,

Been there done that.

Last week they had a "Shell Shocker" deal with 120GB vertex II's for $45. Figured I could RMA it two times before it comes close to break even VS a comparable SSD.

Already on RMA #1. Drive was DOA.
