Moto G - starting at $179...OFF Contract

Yet another quad a7 phone though. Better software support I'm sure but the pricing is not really anything new. Missing the holiday season seems kinda dumb.

This does come with a fm radio... hmmm....

Probably won't be on Verizon and if it is, they'll probably charge $500+ for it still.

Not that I care personally, it's a great value, but still a bit low-end for me. I don't see how much RAM it has, it would have to be 2GB for me to even consider it since that made a world of difference going from the Gnex (1GB) to the Note 2 (2GB). Camera will probably be pretty bad at least if previous Moto phones are any indicator.

Which is amazing for a phone in the US. Seems like every phone that has an FM radio built in overseas, gets it stripped out (or permanently disabled via hardware) for the US variants.

It's a conspiracy!

It has 1 GB of RAM...and no LTE.

Guess they had to make it cheap some how.

Just for the price I could get this for a toy...

I do have a 520 and this seems to be a good feature upgrade.

It says coming to US in january on that link. But it's already available in UK? Any US online stores where you could buy it right now?

I'm glad it doesn't have 4g. Means I can use it on PagePlus.

You could probably activate it on straight talk CDMA. Not a bad deal for pre-paid BYOP on Verizon towers.

You have to watch the Moto G launch video (linked below) to understand its intended market which is the emerging markets like South America, India, rest of the world, etc. In a nutshell, better than iPhone 5c at about a third of the cost and it'll get Kit Kat 4.4 with ART code optimization that's significant. Great medium range phone for those markets that don't have LTE and even for US customers who don't want the LTE tax since a lot things don't need it like browsing, Google Maps navigation, streaming radio and non-HD video, etc.

Front camera is 1.3 MP ( 1.3 not 1.0 :) )
Rear is 5.0 MP

I have an evo 3d w/ a S3 MSM8660 SoC on Sprint. This would be a pretty decent step up. I'm looking to switch to straight talk or a similar prepaid plan. For the price this looks like a great option. I was looking at the nexus 5 but i doubt i'd use it to it's potential and it's nearly twice the price.

My only concern is the lack of LTE and non-expandable memory. seems like a bummer. any idea if it supports USB OTG? Also, do we know what other devices use the same camera hardware?

So this doesn't have any of the features like Active notifications, Moto Assist, always listening etc right?

Also its quite funny that 1GB is now considered low end for Android, when just a few years ago flagships had 512MB. Android should be getting leaner and 1GB should be more than enough, a huge chunk of memory is taken up by skins like TouchWiz but this shouldn't affect the Moto.

If you are on Sprint and are satisfied with their connectivity in your region than you definitely had better look at the Republic Wireless. They are selling the Moto X (not a Moto G) for $299 with no contract. The only catch, which would not be a catch if you wish to continue using Sprint is that the ROM in the phone locks you into Sprint connectivity only, and you have to use Republic's plans. But look at the pricing :) of their no-contract monthly plans, and yes it supports LTE.

$5 WiFi Only:
WiFi only means unlimited talk, text and data—but only on WiFi. Outside of WiFi, your device won’t be able to connect to cellular service.

$10 WiFi + Cell Talk & Text:
Unlimited talk and text on WiFi and cellular, and unlimited data on Wi-Fi only.

$25 WiFi + Cell + 3G:
Unlimited talk, text and data on WiFi, plus 3G cellular.

$40 WiFi + Cell + 4G:
Unlimited talk, text and data on WiFi, plus 4G cellular.

$299
Republic Wireless is a prepaid, no-contract service so a billing cycle is 30 days. You can therefor change your plan twice per month.

--> For continued discussion of this phone, please post in the [H]ard Forum post entitled
Moto X $299 via Republic Wireless no-contract Monthly plans costing $5, $10, $25, $40

I really think they should of put a 5 inch screen in this phone, that bottom bezel is huge. I'll see how it is when I get mine I ordered one today

Moto G knocks it out of the park with the first review:

http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/26/moto-g-review/

Apple could learn from the pioneer of mobile instead of that disaster called iPhone 5c.

Not to derail the thread too much, but I'm gonna have to call you out on this "iPhone 5c is a disaster" garbage.

First, and most importantly: Apple never said this was going to be a budget phone. Rumor sites and speculative analysts did. It's not Apple's fault if you accept a sketchy rumor at face value.

We also don't have any hard proof of how well it's selling, and it's still a good phone. More expensive than it should be? Quite possibly. But it'll take better photos than the Moto G, has more storage options than the Moto G and has LTE data that the Moto G lacks. It may be faster, too. You're better off comparing the iPhone 5c to the Nexus 5, although that's not *quite* a fair comparison (Google sells the N5 through Google Play with little to no profit, unlike most every other OEM).

The Moto G is a great phone for the money. The emphasis, of course, is "for the money." I'd definitely recommend it over the iPhone 4S, and sometimes over the 5c depending on whether or not you're buying on contract and what you want in a device.

I pay about $160 a month for me and my wife (i5) on AT&T.... between the two of us, we use like 200MB a month in data, but we do text alot. Would something like this be optimal and just get on a cheaper plan?

I just think $80 a month per person for a phone is stupid. Have I used the browser and map from time to time? Yes, but outside of facebook and text that's it. Seems it would be better for me to just buy these phones and get on a cheap walmart plan?

A lot of people these days hardly touch voice minutes but use SMS and social network messaging instead. If you fall into this category there are a lot of options out there that save you money. This $30 plan with 100 min voice, unlimited SMS and 5GB 4G then unlimited 3G is one of the more popular ones and is on Tmobile so above Sprint and about equivalent to AT&T in service. Check the coverage map to confirm for your area.

anyone pick one of these up yet?
I have one here. It's pretty damn impressive for a phone $180 out of pocket. Naturally I also went for an official snap cover that made the color more like a Nokia or an iPhone 5c...

But any way, what would you like to know that's not already in the reviews?

Should I get that or a slightly used Nexus 4?

I have been wondering the EXACT same thing. Probably the Moto G for 2 reasons. It's new, and has a more powerful GPU and similar if not more powerful CPU.

Depends on what you're looking for. Nexus 4 probably has better camera if that's your thing.

Great question. Moto G and Nexus 4 are nearly identical. Personally, I'd lean towards the Moto G for the following reasons:

- you're getting new with warranty and the peace of mind in regards to hygiene (people spit when they talk and sometimes you can't rid of the spit smell from used phone)
- longer OS update support vs Nexus which is usually supported for 2 years and the Nexus 4 is already 1 year old
- better battery life
- case customization and even if it's not your thing it's nice to be able to swap the back cover when it's worn
- better ergonomics since it's easier to cup in hand with curved back
- made by the pioneer of the mobile phone (Startac is one of the best phones I own and looking forward to owning another Motorola)
- Motorola is genuine about bringing jobs back to the US unlike Apple's fake show (as much as I love and own South Korean and Japenese gadgets Texas, where they are made, deserves love too)
- global push means better dev support

i thought the moto g battery wasn't removable?

I pre ordered and canceled just to see how the battery life was from users. I'll order mine tomorrow and get rid of this S3

Seems like a really nice upgrade to my cheap slider phone. I just might finally jump to a smartphone.
