I am about to pull the trigger on a new Z87 build and have a question about using the ram currently in my x58. I have the Corsair Vengeance 12GB (3x4) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233146 and was wondering if I could use it and add a Corsair Vengeance 4GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233141 to give me 16GB of ram. They look like they have the same specs, etc. Would you guys recommend this or am I not seeing the obvious pitfall that is right in front of my face?

Might as well give it a try.

If they are the same exact chips they should definitely work.

If they are different chips but have the same or very similar timings they have an ok chance of working.

From the pics, it looks like they are probably the same exact thing.

Just guessing based on the model numbers they look like the same part. There's a good chance they'll work out of the box, and if not I bet you can get them going by dropping the clock speed and/or latency a notch. I'd try it.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll pick up one from Amazon and if it doesn't work well I'll just return it.

Just to follow up, I purchased the single ram stick and it plays nice with my existing 3 sticks on a new z87 build.
