XBox One Owners' Thread (First Impressions, Thoughts, You Happy?)

So I was able to 'fix' my Xbox One with the disc grinding issue. I made a quick Youtube video of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ96ETv50Gc

It sounded like the slot loading mechanism kept running after the disc was already all the way in the drive, so I tried to delay the disc loading. Turns out it worked. Also after I did this trick once the bluray drive started acting normal. Anyone with the grinding issue might want to at least give this a shot before going through the hassle of a warranty swap.

Probably still a better idea to either return it for a replacement or send it in to MS for a more permanent fix.

Finally a review of Forza 5 that mentions the underhanded DLC practices. 14 tracks is abysmal for a Forza series game. And I had track fatigue in Forza 3 and 4 both of which had over 30 tracks.

I am fine with the cars number but cutting out tracks and cars and offering money purchase instead of credits or free cars for each level is downright idiotic. Still scored high though since the game itself is solid.

So far no issues for me. I just played a couple hours of Assassin's Creed. I can tell the kinect sensor is way better this time around.

Only complaint is my controller, the left analog stick feels like clicks when i go all the way to outer edges. Not a huge deal but enough to be noticeable, but getting another controller anyways.

Didn't Gran Turismo do the same thing with car dlc packs?

What can you do though? You're screwed after opening the game since you can't return it and can only exchange for the same item.

I don't think there's a way to put the shrink wrap back on. /s

dont think so. GT5 dlc only added a handful of cars.

Yeah where as this Forza 5 is holding back maybe half of thee entire roster of cars, the game should have cost 29.99 or less because if you want all the cars available (who obviously wouldn't? no one I thought so) It's a terrible way to enjoy a game.

Imagine if NBA , NFL , MLB or heck a game like SM3DW held back half of the characters, and made you cough up another fitty for the FULL VERSION of the game? Yeah you know it's garbage.

how is new xbox controller compared to DS4 or 360 controller?

If you liked the 360 it is more refined and feels better than ever. D-pad is finally fixed, the X1 controller is like a step up, the DS4 was a leap forward. But still for FPS X1 controller, and everything else I actually like the DS4.

Car packs is one thing but having only 14 tracks in a game that is about racing and the love of cars is pretty pathetic. All previous games have had 30 or more tracks. Some big ones are missing that will inevitably be DLC if they want people to play past the first 4-5 hours in the game.

This is absolute bullshit. Already the car packs annoy the living crap out of me as was the case in Forza 4 and Horizon eventhough I owned the special editions to those games and got like 3 cars and a few stupid items for buying the special edition (Forza 4 had a 96 page booklet though). Paying extra for tracks is downright absurd.

My initial plan was to get Forza 5, but maybe I'll just pick up NFS Rivals and just have fun with the cops.

So 960 hours of grinding for all the cars or paying $1690 for fucking tokens.

Go fuck yourself Microsoft entirely. If you want an example of how the gaming media fails (plenty of those though) this is how. Hardly ANY site said ANYTHING about this. I mean most did not even write a sentence about how absurd the requirement is for actually collecting cars in Forza 5. Seeing Adam Sessler gush about Forza 5 over and over again now just makes me cringe , for such a vocal individual he basically said almost nothing on the topic. Sad.

It just shows what you can get away with during "Launch Fever". BF4 runs like a turd , COD has frame rate issues on one platform , games are getting "1080p" patches. I'm really surprised gamers are not raising more of a stink about this.

Gamers no longer have the right to complain about this shit down the line when it becomes the norm for every title because they choose to ignore it now. By not sending a clear and resounding message (AKA Microsoft DRM at E3) then they will just carry on with the raping of your wallet and the continual push towards another video gaming market collapse.

In my opinion this perhaps makes Forza 5 the worst launch title of all , by introduction of an incredibly long grind (which few will attempt much less actually do) or a paywall so high that only Saudi Prince's can afford it.

Rivals is a damn good game IMO. I'm not a huge racing fan but I've put a solid 10+ hours into Rivals in the past few days.

Rivals is great, I am about 10 hours into it as well. If someone really wants a circuit racing game like Forza, it won't cut it though.

I've always found the Forza games lacking in tracks. They're all variations of about six or seven different tracks or locations. Forza 5 certainly can't afford to have even less tracks.

Don't get me wrong, I think Forza is the best racing franchise...but track variety certainly isn't its niche.

Way back on the 360, there was a franchise called Project Gotham Racing which I thought was pretty good. Sad that the studio making it got bought out and was closed down though.

I think Forza WAS the best racing franchise, since Sony pooched up Gran Turismo good and proper with GT5. Now they all suck in one way or another :(

I have some hopes for Driveclub, but Evolution Studios really made a poor game (Motorstorm Apocalypse) the last time they released anything.

It all started with metropolis street racer (Dreamcast) then project Gotham (Xbox) I still play those on the systems they came out on. No matter what anybody says here they were good but this game is better.

I still own and play those so my memories are fresh not just nostalgia.
Sure I'd love some more tracks but it isn't hard to add that cars are bought just like in horizon. Sure you don't get free cars every level.

I still love this game need for speed is good too but it's a totally different game.

I picked one up on Friday and I'm impressed.

Setup was smooth and quick on a fast comcast connection. Kinect setup was quick and easy too.

The HDMI passthru is a killer feature for me. As a father of two little kids, it is now super quick to switch between playing games, watching tv, and Netflix or amazon video for them.

Xbox auto detected my cable box and tv model. I say xbox on and it turns everything on--TV and cable box too. Very nice. Voice control is nice too. I wouldn't have thought I'd use it, but after a couple days I can see it becoming a habit.

I've only played FIFA 14 (nice upgrade from the 360 version) so I can't really speak to the games. Though I wasn't really counting on much, hopefully devs will start churning some more stuff out.

The new controller is fine. Dig the finish and the d-pad, but I don't think the shape feels better or worse than the 360 version just a little different.

Oddly, I got the xbox one because the PS3 is the previous gen console I wasn't ready to part with (buy xb1/sell 360). I still think the ps4 will be better for games in the long run, so when the must-plays hit, I'll bite.

...so is there any way to simply plug in your system and start gaming like you did on the first Xbox and the 360? I do not care for integrating my One with everything in my entertainment center, nor do I care to assess myself on camera solely to configure Kinect.

It's the same with the One. Just plug it in and start gaming. You can turn the Kinect off if you want but I don't see why you would. It auto logs you in via facial recognition. So turning it off would be a step backwards for your "just start gaming".

The real bullshit is that it won't automatically sign into xbox live without using Kjnect.

I don't see why people are still crapping their pants over kinect? It works very well and considering it just came out and hasn't even had any post launch tweaks yet it works very well. I have had zero issues with it unless I said something wrong that's my fault not kinect.

If it's this good now can't wait for some tweaks and additions.

Any one know of a extension for the kinect? Mine is going in my theater and the xbox one will be in my rack a good 20 feet from where the kinect will need to be. Why in the hell did they make the cable proprietary.

Not yet that I've seen but I'm sure one will be available at some point. Cable has more to it than your average USB cable with all the video audio and ir that runs thru the unit.

True. Track fatigue has been the reason why I never finished Forza 3 or Forza 4. However, with 5 they want a person to play about ~40-50 hours to be able to purchase a single exotic car. To top it off they want a person to play it on the same fucking 14 or so tracks.

I haven't put that many hours in both Forza 3 and 4 combined. With 14 tracks and my ADD I would be lucky to get maybe 8-10 hours out of the total game including everything. Hell, I spent more time in NFS MW last year than this. Even in Forza Horizon I spent about ~14-15 hours to complete the campaign. It is downright bad business practice to force people to grind so much in a game that they paid for in FULL just to experience the cars that they like.

Just read this. lol

Case in point: the Lotus E21 formula one car, one of Forza 5’s new star attractions keenly publicised by Microsoft as this is the first game in the series to feature open wheel racecars. What they failed to mention was the astronomical price of admission. In-game, it costs a whopping 6 million credits. Alternatively, at the time of writing you can buy it for 10,000 tokens – in real world cash, this equates to over £60.00. £60.00 for one digital racecar? No. Just no.

The average player, then, won’t ever be able to experience the pleasure of driving this car unless they’re prepared to grind through 60 hours-worth of laborious racing. And that’s before you take into account sifting through menus, tuning the car and practicing to stay competitive. In practice, you could be spending over 100 hours just to drive one car. Yes, there still needs to be a sense of progression and car rarity, but this is unfeasible.

Of course, Microsoft will argue that micro-transactions are entirely optional. But in the case of Forza 5, it’s abundantly obvious that the fundamental game design has been detrimentally altered to endorse in-game purchases.

Unlike in Forza 4, free cars are no longer regularly rwarded for winning races and levelling up – in Forza 5 you have to purchase each and every one of them using in-game credits or tokens. This restricted access is only compounded by the fact that players who don’t have time to grind in the career and simply want to test drive their favourite cars at their leisure can’t experience them in free drive mode. In Forza 4, every car was available to drive in free mode – the catch was that you couldn’t customise or upgrade them outside of the career, which was a fair compromise for casual players. In contrast, free drive in Forza 5 has been stripped-down to just 40 cars.

There are other changes that were clearly designed as a ploy encouraging you to pour more money into Microsoft’s pot, too. The much-loved manufacturer affinity, where sticking with the same manufacturer reaped regular rewards in Forza 4, has been scrapped altogether, so you can say goodbye to free upgrades. Auction houses to sell and share cars are also gone, and you can’t gift cars either.

I bought Forza 5 LE and very disappointed. With the graphic downgrades from E3 to reach 1080P 60FPS and the lack of content it almost feels like a glorified demo.

However, I've been enjoying Killer Instinct a lot.

I suspect MS gave media mountain of free tokens or some unlock codes. I've seen the Lotus being used in some pre/review videos, no one mentioned how ridiculous it would be to purchase or earn normally. Most reviews totally glossed over the insane time or money commitment required to unlock high end cars. We just ended up with drivel like "Cars can be earned with game credits or via in app purchases".

Well, here is my quick review after living with the Xbox One for a few days now.

First the negatives which may not be a big deal to anyone else:

1) The length of the Kinect cable. It is to short to run behind my wall and mount under my 120" screen. There are no extension cables available yet. So right now it is sitting on top of the Xbox One and Xbox 360 boxes and driving me nuts. I know I don't have to use it, but I figure I paid for it, might as well use it.

2) The HDMI Pass through. In my opinion this is NOT a pass through. There is no signal coming through if the Xbox is off. This has been a big Pain in the Ass for me so far. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I had it configured like so - DirecTV - Xbox One - Denon Receiver - Epson 6010 Projector. I have a universal remote so having the Xbox turn everything on wouldn't work well. The issues I've been having is that I'll turn the DirectTV, Receiver, and Projector on, then say "Xbox, On" and it will still not give me a picture - turn the Xbox off and back on and it works - sometimes. I've tried turning the Xbox on before the rest of the items and sometimes I get DTS surround and sometimes I get 7.1 with no reasoning behind it - I've looked in my settings and it still shows DTS for the HDMI cable. I finally gave up today and put the Xbox One on it's own input. Maybe I'll wait for a few patches to come out and try again... Kind of disappointing. Anyone else having these issues.

Now for the good:

1) The Kinect is kind of freaky at how good it is in picking up who is in the room, and so far I, nor anyone else in the family, have had issues with the voice commands.

2) The controllers feel good to me.

And finally the Meh:

1) The games in general aren't all that inspiring, and the load times are pretty long before you can start playing.

2) The lack of anything that really feels next gen to me. So far it feels like everything could have been done on my 360...

I'm sure it will get better, but at this moment I'm not thrilled with the Xbox One.
