Why I Won't Be Buying Either New Console

The author of this editorial claims he wont be buying either of the two newly launched consoles. Why? I don't know, probably because he owns a PC? :D

Consoles used to represent inclusivity and the comforts of socializing with friends, but now they are targeted at an audience - and a medium - which is growing up and leaving them behind. PS4, Xbox One or a monster gaming PC. Choose a side, then spend the next five years of your life attacking the option you didn’t pick in internet comment threads.

I get that the price of admission is high, but people are allowed to own both plus a pc aren't they?

Sure, but that obviously makes you a traitor and should be tarred and feathered online for soiling the community for system X, by also playing systems Y and Z.

That guy must be living a pretty boring life to put that much ego into his "gaming decisions."

Makes sense in a way, like how instead of playing games yourself its now cool to watch someone's stream of them playing a game.

I'm a Nintendo gamer at heart, but I'll be damned if I didn't want to play those Sony exclusive titles. And I really really want to shout and wave at my TV to change channels or Skype. I'll probably end up with the big three. Again.

A desktop in my house is a given, so that doesn't even make the list. I get a last gen high end gaming card for a steal, sell it a year later, and start the cycle all over again...

I'm obviously the exception, but I like to consider myself a gamer. I love games. I want them on Android, PC, and console. I play f2p, blockbusters, Indies, and the classics. I was raised on Nintendo and boot disks to free up memory for games loaded on 5.25" disks...

IPX lan games to xband to xbl... Give me games, give me fun, give me camaraderie.

Meh, I kind of agree.

I haven't owned any console since my original 8 bit Nintendo in the 80's, and I probably won't ever own one in the future either. Once I got my first PC there was no looking back. They are garbage comparatively, and I have no interest in them what so ever.

The only games worth playing are usually the PC exclusives anyway, (or if not exclusives, at least the titles that originate on the PC before being ported elsewhere).

Console games - either on the console, or later ported to PC/s - tend to be baby like, over-simplified and thus no fun. There are a few notable exceptions, but those were all ported to the PC anyway.

I simply see no point in owning a console, and quite frankly, yes if someone is older than their teens and owns one, I do kind of judge :p

I bought 3 guns and a 900 dollar scope and 2 tomahawks, i wont be able to buy any consoles for a while. :D

there is no console vs pc for me. I simply bought the previous consoles because they had enough exclusive games for me to justify it.

I don't buy consoles because the other people in the house use the TV more often than me.

Of course, I could connect the newer consoles to my monitor, but then why would I place it in the same area the desktop is in?

I'll end up with both more then likely like I always do.. There are a few games that are coming out next year that are console only that I really want to play. Also my wife wants a xbox for the dancing games lol So I will more then likely end up with a xbox.. I'm always sinking more money in my PC though. It's ever going lol.. Hope now that the consoles are all x86 that it means that most if not all games will get ported over to the pc at some point. I hope any way..

I'm going to wait out this console generation. I owned all three last time, but really, I'm done adding more boxes under my TV. Frankly, I didn't really even have time to properly use my consoles this generation.

...And by wait out, I mean, not buy one until it's a weekend, I'm bored, there's a new heavily advertised game, and "whatever". Because after all, "whatever" is the best reason of all.

...Except maybe tacos. Why? Because tacos.

I game on a PC. Good luck to whoever wins, loses or draws on the great console war. The PC is still the better platform for most games.

I'm enjoying my PS4.

Yeah, I'm a PC gamer, I think PC is clearly superior, and my priority stays there. But it's a great compliment to my PC gaming, I have a console where I can play games with friends and co-workers, since its a much more social friendly aspect, and something to play my blu rays and Netflix.

They're good systems if you use them right.

why buy something new when the old one works :)
So it means you never upgraded any part of your PC that wasn't broken, changed a TV that was still working, etc? Yeah right!
It's the same with console (and PC), you update to play the "greatest and latest" titles. Even if most games will come out for PS3 and 360 in the next 6 months. It won't last and support will drop.

Games are games. Now get back to your pinochle, canasta & bingo at the senior center gramps, us kids are busy hardcore gaming Milton Bradley board games up in this bitch :D

Er muh gerd, how can my life be complete without "some games?"
well then you could apply that to anything. the point was its about the games NOT always the platform. if there were some games that you really wanted to play and they were console only then it does not matter how good your pc is. I am glad I bought a PS3 and 360 for games like Uncharted series, Gears of War series, Red Dead Redemption and so on.

Whatever console that has homebrew content and all that stuff will get my money ;)

you cant play every game on a pc though...

Nor can you play every game on PC unless you have absurd amounts of free time :p

I haven't bought a console last generation and I probably won't buy a console this generation for the simple fact they lack the games to inspire me to buy them. There's a few games on X360 and a few games on PS3 that make me think I might want one... but not enough to justify the price of buying one and the space it'll take up in my house.

Especially given I have 130 games on Steam many of which I haven't played (still barely touched the more recent Assassin's Creed games, Metro 2033, Darksiders 2, Dead Rising 2, Fallout NV, FarCry3, Hard Reset, Two Worlds 2, Tomb Raider, The Witcher 2, that's just what I've bought on Steam intending to play and haven't gotten around to it yet).

I totally agree you buy a console for the games... it's just in the games department they haven't been inspiring me for the past couple of generations.

Making choices would be easier with limitless time and money.

Yeah, I'm not going to get to play Red Dead Redemption. I have enough other stuff to do and I'm not buying a console to be able to. There are easily enough good PC games to satisfy all the gaming I want to do.

When my girlfriend comes over and we play a game together for a few minutes, the Gamecube suffices. I'm pretty sure she neither knows nor cares about the difference.

Anyone who has FC3 and Fallout NV and hasn't played them yet definitely doesn't need to buy a new system for new games.

Hell, I just finished XCOM from a year or two ago. Got it for $20.

Hey look, someone that actually gets it.

Also another reason to own a console? I can actually pick it up and transport it without breaking my back and without being nervous transporting $1800 worth of hardware.

I can bring it to a friends house , hook it up in seconds and continue on the evening drinking , having fun.

People are allowed to own a smart phone's and a 3DS and Vita, but the sales of those gaming consoles have fallen because of the smart phone market.

1. The smart phone is something you'll always need.
2. The games are cheaper.
3. The graphics processing is just as good if not better then those consoles.

So why spend extra money for something that technically is inferior? The same can be said about PC vs console.

1. You'll always need a PC.
2. The games are cheaper with Steam.
3. The graphics are always better on PC.

what? I am saying that if you are apc only gamer than you miss out on some games
If you know what you're doing you can own just a PC and play all the games. Plug in a PS3 or Xbox 360 controller and even do it with a gamepad. There's also very few games that don't make it to PC that are good. Final Fantasy 13 is probably the only game I can't play on PC. At least not yet.

Keep in mind that since consoles are so closely related to PC, the only thing keeping Sony or Microsoft from running those games on PC is exclusivity. Cause without it, nobody would care to buy these machines.

I don't think I've done that for about 10 years. All my friends have consoles of various generations. Typically we end up playing N64, PS2, PS1, GameCube, the original Xbox.

The last time I remember taking my console to a friend's place was the PS1 back when he had an N64 and I had both an N64 and a PS1, and before that back when he first bought his N64 and I only had a SNES.

Now that we're a bit older we seem to care less about playing the latest and greatest while we sit around drinking and shooting the shit, so any console will do and we all own at least a couple of them.

I tend to buy consoles only for the few games I want to play on them. I never could justify the PS3, but the XBOX 360 had a few games here and there I wanted and enjoyed.

Just buy them all. I had a favorite from every generation.. and some of those systems collected a of dust.. like my wii!! Then xbox 360 after I paid 6 years of xbox gold. Now i'll pay for playstation + lol..

I'm all about balling and making big moves. What I would want is a the best, highest end, most high quality monitor, with an xbox one, ps4, and a dreamcast, maybe N64 connected, and PC on a dual monitor setup. That way I can do my homework or work and game, or play music on the console streamed from the PC while playing a game of high quality on the PC. My .02.

I'm not one who's scared of burning money... I just don't like burning it on consoles :p Every time I consider buying a console I inevitably ask myself the question "wait, but why?", and every time the answer comes back "err... no good reason" and I don't buy it :D
