Do We Live in the Matrix?

I think the answer to this question is obvious, don't you?

Physicists can now offer us the same choice, the ability to test whether we live in our own virtual Matrix, by studying radiation from space. As fanciful as it sounds, some philosophers have long argued that we’re actually more likely to be artificial intelligences trapped in a fake universe than we are organic minds in the “real” one.

I'll take the blue pill over living in a sewer being chased by sharp metal lasery things.

Just had a case of deja vu on the front page, saw this story posted three times, you know what that means.

Cipher had it right all along. He was negotiating for a great life, and the agent had no reason to deny him, since it was merely a matter of changing a few lines of code.

Also...Cipher was the one who managed to get himself into the Matrix on his own, talk to the agent about the terms of the deal, and leave...apparently without anyone to help him. How'd he manage that? Simple: Cipher was the One.

Wrong, I'm the-one1 :D:cool:

Deja Vu here as well!

It's amazing how all you have to do is wrap up 400 year old Cartesian philosophy in a sci-fi wrapper to get people to pay attention.

Its simple

Short answer, yes

And of course instruments will tell scientist we don't, it was programmed that way!

Humans desire to be the center of attention so badly we come up with shit like this. That our entire existence is some programmers simulation so that they can be amused by tinkering with our reality. Rather than just accept that we are just tiny specs in an unfathomable universe.

I liked comparing Reboot to this concept instead of the Matrix. Their universe is a computer, and their god was the user.

if only we had programmed robots and machines with the Laws of Robotics we wouldn't have come to this enslavement.

ake this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Also, Reboot was an awesome TV Show. :p

It really is turtles all the way down, except its virtual machines instead of turtles.

It doesn't matter if we do or we don't. There is no discernible way to ever know and even if we did find out this to be the case, then what? There will be nothing you can do about it anyway, so enjoy the succulent steak.

Yup. This is why there is no point in trying to figure it out. The second someone in the simulations even thinks to themselves "Test result A will prove we live in a simulation while B will prove we don't." the simulation codes itself to only return result B when that test is performed. So we will never know.

Heck, even if someone did magically figure it out for certain the simulation would just remove that proof from the persons mind and the simulation and it would be like it never happened. Speaking of which....

The producers of Lost said everything in the show could be explained by science, yet it clearly couldn't.... Unless it took place in a simulation. I think that is their secret explanation for it the show. The timeline works since the show came out about a year after Nick Bostrom (mentioned in the article) released his paper on this subject. The basic idea could be that any AI that is starting to figure out/break the simulation is shipped off to the island for study to determine what went wrong with them by putting them through a series of stressful events. Once their issue is figured out they are killed/removed from the island. Basically the entire show is explained by this, and all events that can only be explained by "magic' are also explained since the simulation itself would have the ability to perform what would appear to be 100% magic to its inhabitants.

We should be so lucky. The machines just wanted energy in the Matrix, these cocksuckers want our souls.

It's the old God is watching over us so we are not alone story. Pretty scary to contemplate the reality of our "aloneness". Yet there it is. We are alone but all is not lost. We have HardOCP to distract ourselves from "reality". LOL
