Yep, even 1st generation iPads are eligible. Only caveat is no cracked screen and it has to power on. The gift card can be used for anything and it's not required to turn back around and get another iPad.

Probably not a good deal for a later generation but for a 1st generation, it's an incredibly good deal.

Traded mine in this morning and it took literallly, 2 minutes. Now what to do with $200...

Did this today (traded in a 16gb first gen iPad wifi) and walked out with an iPad Air for $320 out of pocket ($479 + tax)... Pretty sweet deal. The one thing the mobile associate wanted everyone to know was that you should be sure not to do a system restore until after you take it to the store.

So... the "locator" doesn't show any stores anywhere near me within 200 miles in Phoenix... also nothing within 200 miles of Fontana CA and Austin TX... what?

Also the $200 only works for in-store trade in not online. We've kinda been stuck with a 1st gen for a while now and would love to get a newer one.

I talked to the mobile associate about that also. They are having an issue with their website apparently. Any target that has a mobile department (cellphones) has the exchange program. It should be noted that an actual "mobile associate" has to be there. They usually work 11am-7pm (I called ahead to ensure they would have one working that the time I'd be there).

It does only work in store... It's kind of their way to get ya in the door, lol. I also wanted to say that you can get an iPad 4 for $450 and it comes with a $40 gift card. Not a bad price.

P.S.
The gift card can be used for any Target purchase, it doesn't have to go towards a new iPad.

I do not understand this statement. If I was about to go trade in my old iPad 1, then I would WANT to do a restore before taking it to the store, just to wipe all of my personal things off of it first. Why would they not want you to restore, please explain.

EDIT: Nevermind, I saw this on Slickdeals:

2) Should I reset the iPad prior to turning it in? - Probably not, most reps need to browse to settings to get the serial/model #

Dam none near me at all. Any chance i could ship my old iPad 1 out to someone to help me out?

Sweet deal, I am thinking of trading in my 1st gen and getting a galaxy tab 7. might have enough left over for an sd card.

A buddy tried this at a target in Chicago & they refused & said they weren't participating in the promo.

According to your profile, you're in DC. Forget using the locator on their website as it sucks. Just find a Target that sells subsidized cell phones and plans. That's who is doing this anyway and if all the Targets in OKC are doing it, I seriously doubt the Target's in your area don't have this capability.

I did this yesterday in San Jose without issue.

Traded in 2 gen 1 ipads both 32GB and one with 3G, and got $400 credit. All ipads are $200 regardless of version or specs.

Basically got a $400 gift card right then and there.

I used it to pick up a 16GB ipad air which turned out to be about $120 after taxes.

I had wiped my ipads before bringing them in, however, when I brought them in, they didn't even look at my ipads if they worked or not. Just saw I had 2 in hand, asked me what versions and size they were, asked for my drivers license, and 2 min later, I got my $400 gift card.

They are also running a $100 gift card on all iphone 4 and newer trade ins, although I think you can get more for them on craigslist.

Damn, I should trade in my iPad 1 for a new iPad 2 Mini !

Yup, I sold a broken iPhone 4 for 127.50$ on eBay so a working one is worth much more than a 100$ gift card unless you don't want to deal with the hassle of selling it yourself.

Ok will be trying tonight after work... so sad because my wife monopolizes the damn iPad lol. I lug my 17" laptop around the house!

As of last night, $67 was the normal price on the website for a trade in credit on an iPad 1. However, this is a special promotion that is going on in-store in the Target mobile department.

I can absolutely confirm that a working iPad 1 nets you a $200 gift card in-store.

Oddly enough, their site says there isn't a store with a mobile department within 50 miles of me. And I live in Northern VA !

fuck me man, I just gave my 8GB Gen1 away after getting my Nexus 7 a month or so ago.

Fifth post down I this thread I relayed a message that Target is having issues with the mobile locator section of their website. If there is a target with a mobile department near you (you can call if you're unsure) then they have a trade in program. Forget about using the website as it just says their are zero Targets within your range no matter what city/state you put in.

$200 back is good deal if you want to sell the device. If not, JB, then hook it up to your tv and you have got a sweet airplay server/streaming device

Also for those of you on pre-paid phone plans... While I was there I noticed another promotion they were just starting to put signage up for. If you bring in ANY working cellphone (it can be a 10 year old pos...as long as it turns on it's fine) you can trade it in for a $50 minutes card. You can do this once a month so they associate was telling me you can basically get your minutes free every month if you use under $50.

And yea... The reason they don't want you to do a system restore before you bring it into the store is they have to connect to iTunes and some of the 1st gen iPads have issues doing this wirelessly. I did a system restore before I took mine in... It wasn't a big deal they just had to bust out a usb cord to connect to iTunes (her cord was like 3 inches long and a pain in the ass to use which was the only reason she said she likes it when people do the system restore at the store).

They took my iPad 1 without any issues... It even had scratches in the glass.. they did not really care...

Success! The store I traded it at ran out of iPad air's so we had to drive to another Target but went without a hitch. No charge cable needed, I wiped it just before going to the store. Make sure it has enough charge to power up properly though.

I almost never used our iPad, wife was pretty much glued to it so she's super happy with an upgraydd.

You guys get all the good deals. I have a 1st Gen sitting at home somewhere that I have absolutely no use for and can't even get rid of.

I was at Target last night and saw a guy trade in 5 1st gen IPADs..

Going to try today. Hopefully they are still doing this as I know there are people abusing this.

guess he scavenged CL and bought all the 1st gen iPad for cheap then turn around to get more money.

I tried to do the same, there were two locally but already gone. Still, going to trade the wife's towards an air I think.

If the target near me does indeed have a "Mobile" department, I wonder if I should trade in my iPad 1 for an iPad Mini 1 and pay the $99 difference.

I already have an iPad Mini 1, and I think it's pretty snazzy.

The iPad Gen 1 is simply a media station on a stand in the bedroom. The Gen 1's don't appear to support Apple's Streaming Radio, so this might be a way around it.

I just did this. Ipad 1 for $200, hello new ipad mini.

I'm browsing their online site and under the categories on the left hand side. I believe most people who are trading in today are getting a mistake cash in price.

For example, under the list an ipad 64GB will give you $75, but people are actually getting $200. In other words, do it now before they either take it down and notify their reps to give their actual trade in values.

I had a long conversation with a mobile associate at Target. It's not a mistake and it's not going to be taken down. It is a PLANNED promotion that will be going on until the 9th. They are doing it to get people in the door and holiday shopping BEFORE black Friday. This is why it only works in the store. They want you in the door. If you try to do it online it will give you the normal prices for an iPad turn in ($65 for a 16gb wifi first gen or $75 for a 64gb wifi first gen like you noticed...)

Think of it this way... You turn in your iPad and get $200... Since it's on a Target gift card you are almost guaranteed to use it at Target. If you buy a new iPad that's an extra $320 on top of the $200 you'll be spending at Target... And what about a new smart cover for your iPad, gotta have one of those, and since you're already at Target why not buy it there (another $40 in Target's pocket). Then finally... Target donates all those crappy first gen iPads to charity (in this case an organization for autistic children) and receives a huge tax break.

Sounds like win win for everyone.

P.S.
She said Target (the mobile associates don't actually work for target by the way) is extremely enthusiastic about the sale and would like the word spread as much as humanly possible, she even asked me to come to Hardforum and Slickdeals (since it came up that I frequent those sites) to clarify details on the deal as well as making a post on Facebook to get the word out.

SO tempted. I have a 32gb mini that I love, but iOS7 has been a bit of a performance bear. I just don't want to be without it, not knowing when the new minis will drop.
