Intel Xeon L5639 Hexa(6) Core LGA1366 Price:US $79.80 Used Ebay Seller

I wonder why they would even attempt to send something out that looks that bad. I hope you get it fixed from them. Curious to see what the outcome is on this. Keep us updated on it.

Ya idk, the other looks only a little better. It was funny I took that one out first and I was thinking "well the second one couldn't look much worse" boy was I wrong. If they make me pay to ship this POS back i'll be pissed. Bad feedfack for everyone!

Had to order one of these to replace my 920. Hoping to extend the lifespan of this chipset another year with this purchase. Just replaced my Mushkin 800w due to failure after 5 solid years of performance with the EVGA Supernova 1000W G2, so can't wait to see what this new chip can do.

If this thing is 32nm, shouldn't that mean it can overclock better than the 45nm 920 most people are replacing? Why would it be so hard to hit 4GHz+? On top of that it's a Xeon which always overclock well. What am I missing?

Cheers to my fellow X58 owners. Still going strong!

The multi is much lower, and x58 tops around 210-225 bclk depending on the board.

That sucks. Overclocking on the X58 is so complicated I never fully mastered it like I did on my previous setup (S939).

Anybody working with a Gigabyte X58-ud3r rev 1?

ffuccckkk got mine today from hong kong. One looks trashed. Contact pads are scratched to hell. Definitely not happy. See picture below. The grey marks are indents...

I ordered from the same seller and got a sinking feeling in my stomach.

Checked the contact pads and was relieved that there were no damage. I then proceeded to remove the sticker on mine just as a precaution that the adhesive on it might be conducive.

Upon peeling the edge off I'm greeted with this...

Not sure what I should be angry about. The fact that I wasted 10 days in anticipation for a sweet deal or nearly dodged a bullet that probably would've taken my motherboard or system with it.

Now that really sucks. I am always leery of dealing with those Hong Kong or Korean sellers.

Just buy from one of the American sellers.

This guy in TX is taking best offers of $70

Yeah just order from anyone in the US with a good track record.

I got mine from a US seller that listed it as brand new but when I received it, it had very apparant circular heatsink marks on the top of the chip. The seller insisted that it was still brand new and that Intel test the chips before it sends them out to these companies.

Anyways the chip works great, look at previous posts for info. I could get a very stable 3.8ghz (1.26vcore and 1.337 pll) To get to 4ghz i had to really crank things. Currently I enabled Turbo & the power optimization tools and my Vcore range between 1.04 to 1.4 (at 4.1ghz 1 core). At full load it runs at 3.7ghz at 1.27vcore.

Great chip definitely going to keep this rig atleast another year as it easily powers through everything I throw at it.

Wow this is such a smoking deal. Snagged one up for my Asus rampage III gene. Might look for another motherboard though.

Holy fuck I'm scared to remove the sticker...

I already decided to return them. I'm not taking a chance when there are so many other sellers. The seller responded that he'd pay up to a certain portion of the shipping back. So i'm going to send them back and pretend the transaction never happened and order from a(n) US seller. Definitely be wary of any that you get from Hong Kong. Double check for physical damage. I got this in the reply back from the seller as well:

" all refurbished server grade CPUs must have undergone some deliberate "destruction" before written-off by companies, some have scratch , some have dirty, under 10% is look like new."

Think i'll order the like new cpus from the person in IL.

Wow, how can he sell for the prices he does with that qualifier? I feel terrible for you guys that have gotten damaged goods. Good deal though, seriously good deal. Still a very relevant CPU!

Had a failed install last night...

Attempted an install on my MSI Eclipse SLI. Wouldn't boot into bios until I reset the cmos. After I finally booted into windows, I was getting odd behavior like not all of my RAM showing up and strange flickering when I opened an explorer window. I attempted to change my RAM settings from auto, and I couldn't boot into bios until I reset the cmos again. I couldn't change any C-state settings also without forcing a cmos reset.

I'm blaming this on motherboard incompatibility being that that the MSI Eclipse SLI is an early x58 board. I'm going to try and return to the seller, but who knows how that will work out...

Anyone want to buy the chip from me who doesn't want to buy one from china?

Well, mine is on the way.

If one was to buy a new/used motherboard and wants it to work with ECC Ram, and slight OC what would you guys suggest?

I have 2 mobos i`m going to try first but they are both consumer so I`m not sure if ECC will be accepted.

I got my chip from hong kong as well, it looked a little more beat up then i expected. However its working stable so far and i dont want to deal with the down time of shipping it back and ordering a replacement.

I didnt take pictures, but it looked like it had some scratches like the pictures posted by osrk

.

This is true. Have had brand new cpus unopened from egg and ma labs come this way.

What if someone was really careful and peeled the Intel sealing sticker just enough off the retail box to get the box open? Benched it or whatever, returned it, and well... no one will be any wiser.

Paranoid!!!!!! But seriously, its highly plausible that Intel tests them then packages them. I mean, who wants something untouched by even our overlordship Intel???

what's the deal with these manufacturer refurbished chips?

Also any recommend some overclocking friendly DDR3 sticks for a 48GB setup?

Nothing is reporting my chip correctly.
But I'm satisfied. Was running 6gb for the longest time, my 920 didn't like 6 sticks of ram. This xeon doesn't seem to give a shit.

Purchased mine from techmax in Texas. A+ all the way!

Still going through the headaches with that Hong Kong seller, now with an invalid return address. I would recommend everyone to avoid them at all costs and just stick with US sellers.

Needless to say I rolled the dice again but with a fella from Texas, hopefully I get a working product this time around. If not then no biggie, it cost $3 to return something in the states versus $25 to Hong Kong.

I guess my luck finally ran out after receiving countless defect-free Korean monitors, haha.

@ Agenesis, did you actually try the chip to see if it still worked. I'm not too fond of Hong Kong buying for these reasons. Don't throw it away though. Might be interested in it for a guinea pig run.

Have not had time to do stress testing yet. Out of town this week so it willhave to wait till I get back.

I see others are able to use an even higher bclk, so I may have to tweak settings more.

Not sure how high I want to push the QPI voltage though. I may be at the limit for my board.

Intel Burn Test super high stress is stable.

Had the vcore voltage at 1.35 and bumped it down to 1.30 and it failed, so I bumped it back up to 1.3125. I have not turned on LLC, so under load it drops down to 1.232.

Hottest core got up to 58c. All other cores were within 3c of that.

Cooling it is a Corsair H100i.

Will try for higher bclk when I get a chance, but am not too confident I will get any higher as it was crashing really easily at 206. Maybe some tweaking will get it higher.

Does anyone have any articles comparing one of these xeons or simular cpu vs one of the 6 core extreme i7s when both cpus are run at the same frequency? I'd like to know how similar (or different) the performance is. There isn't much info out there about the l5639 so its tough to find anything.

Clock for clock performance should be exactly the same provided both CPUs have the same amount of L3 cache.

The L5640 was an official mass released chip which is just one multiplier higher than the L5639.

Some Cinebench runs to compare with Sandys.
Cinebench 11.5

Xeon 3900Mhz MT 10.0, ST 1.36
2600 3900Mhz MT 7.63, ST 1.59
2500K @ 5Ghz MT 7.91, ST 2.01
Xeon 4100Mhz MT 10.51. ST 1.42

My friend did get the Xeon stable at 4.1 with all threads active, but low QPI speed, so he settled for 4Ghz with a higher QPI.

That is what I was hoping to hear.

Thanks

The i7 980X/990X (I'm assuming that's what we're comparing to) has a slightly faster QPI. I doubt that makes a large difference though.

I'm not saying this cant happen but it would have to be a rampant issue and i don't feel like it is. (iirc newegg doesn't even allow CPU returns).

I install 5-15 new cpus a month at work and see some sort of blemish on many if not most of them.

None of mine had any marks on it. Not sure what you or the other people have going on. But would be questing the place where I got it from though. Seems pretty odd for stuff like that to happen.

every chip I've ever bought has had some kind of mark on it

Doesn't matter. If you want the higher QPI then you just adjust the multiplier for it.

In any case, if you are overclocking one of these, the QPI is going to be running higher than stock anyway.

Got my chip today. The top IHS lid has some ugly scarring that I don't think even lapping would fix, could be worse I guess... The bottom looks fine. The china sticker on the bottom is the root of all evil. it doesn't come off as one piece, it flakes into a million pieces and if you touch it with your fingernail it gets stickied into the crevices making it even worse. Will try to get pics later.
