/I posted this link in the BF4 beta thread, but it deserves it's own thead.

I happened to check out the Project Reality site tonight, and I got a very pleasant surprise! The team is currently developing a stand alone version of Project Reality based upon the CryEngine 3 SDK!

For those who didn't play the original mod, these guys were fantastic. They came up with some great concepts, and pushed the limits of what the engine could do with respect to features and game mechanics. There were just too many individual tweaks and additions to mention, you could really tell it was a labor of love from a gifted team.

Since its inception over 8 years ago, Project Reality has built a large, dedicated community which has watched the mod evolve from a single forum post into one of the most successful and decorated modifications of its time. As Project Reality has continued to grow and branch out onto multiple game engines, one question has been continuously asked; Will Project Reality ever produce an independent game?

Well, today we are pleased to finally answer that question. The Project Reality team is proud to officially announce that we are currently developing a completely standalone PC game, Project Reality 2!

Project Reality 2 (or simply "PR2") will be a free to play multiplayer FPS PC game, based off of the critically acclaimed Project Reality modifications for Battlefield 2 and ARMA 2. Unlike our previous projects, PR2 will be a completely standalone game that will require no retail game to play. Our mission is to create the most realistic, immersive and demanding shooter within a virtual combat environment, focusing on encouraging teamwork through tactical gameplay.

Current Status
Project Reality 2 began in mid 2012 and is being created completely from scratch using Crytek's next generation game engine, CryEngine 3 SDK. This powerful engine provides tools able to create many stunning features to recreate and improve upon what you as Project Reality players have become accustomed to.

We are currently developing an initial Alpha build, which will hopefully be ready for internal testing within the next two months. Since Project Reality 2 is a standalone game, everything must be built from scratch, thus requiring more production time than PR?s previous projects. A public release is still away off, but don?t worry; during the entire development cycle we will be updating the community with as much news and media as possible.

The "PR:BF2 Mod v1.0 Trailer" should give you some idea of what they did to BF2.

I played this years ago...I didn't even know it was still in development. PR2 on CryEngine sounds amazing.

Might check out the new one.

Right now I'll just play ArmA for my realism fix.

I used to run a pr:bf2 server years ago, I stopped playing after I got into arma. I'm sure the game is still fun but I just cant deal with the visuals anymore. I played Arma 2: PR for a while also and that was a lot of fun. The base building was a lot more intricate in it and some times fights between FO's would go on for hours and hours, just trading mg fire and mortars back and forth between the bases. Arma 2: PR's downside was that to play one round might take four or five hours, that made me miss Bf2: PR.

I'm excited to see what develops with PR2 that team is extremely talented and with out the chains of the old bf2 engine I think they'll probably do some very impressive things.

I still play a bit. pr still has the best gun and suppression mechanics of any game i have ever played. Can't wait for pr 2, and is going to be free since then they don't have to pay for the cry engine licence.

Good on them! Last I played was back on the BF2 engine, but it was an amazing mod and great times. I will have to check it out again and follow their development on the cry engine. Thanks for bringing this up.

We stopped when it went from being enjoyable to autistic. Muttrah city? Mashtuur city? Whichever the one was with the carrier and the transport helis. They took it out, did a shitload of work to the mod to the point that it became borderline unplayable from the sheer tedium, unless you were in some tryhard clan's Teamspeak all using pro-serious silly callsigns and grid references and compass bearings. About the time they reintroduced that map I realised it'd been chewed up beyond repair.

I liked it before. Realistic, and you could be aspergers-serious if you were one of those weekend warrior reservists with an erection for the military, or you could approach it as a challenging game with your friends if you wanted. They eliminated the possibility for the latter and made it all about the former, so everyone went for Arma instead.

i don't know what your talking about. i play with 3 other people and we still have loads of fun. The patches did nothing to take away the fun.

Wait, so a realism mod got more realistic and that's bad?

Wonder what CryTek's angle in this is. Perhaps that they retain some sort of commercial rights to it in the event it gains any momentum. Because they're obviously allowing these homebrew dinks free access to it, yet its reportedly one of the most expensive engines for a developer or publisher to license (1.2 million is a figure I've read).

Regardless, doesn't look like much is actually happening. The RealityMod site is dead/nonresponsive, and reading through the thread on CryDev.net there doesn't seem to be much activity there either beyond a few kids asking how to make 3D models.

If they put it out for free (which they are) its basically just a mod so they don't need to pay for the licence.

I would have to disagree with you on this, considering it was announced less than 30 days ago and the threads for it on the realitymod forums are packed with updates from the team about goals, what they are working on etc. So yeah its a non commercial license in simple terms they can not legally produce a commercial product with out first paying for a commercial license. A game being given away for free generates no revenue and qualifies for a non commercial license. Crytek has done this because epic has, the unreal engine has a similar policy. It makes sense from a commercial stand point because this gets more people interested and used to developing for their engine so in future endeavors Cryengine is more appealing as it is familiar ground.

The people working on this are not children that need to learn to model, they have nearly eight years of experience developing pr:bf2. A track record that long is evidence enough of dedication.

Also, many developers switch to the paid engine when their game takes off and they start charging. It's win/win for both parties.

Will try it. I liked the realism, but the forced emphasis on team work, mics and other tedious stuff was not something I enjoyed in PR BF2.

Will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Slightly related, but there is another free realism type game in development for free on Cryengine 3, which is Traction Wars. WWII and looks Red Orchestra like.

There is also Festung Europa, which is a sequel to the Darkest Hour mod (RO), also on Cryengine 3 though this is to be a paid title. It seems to be like a real successor to RO as they are not peddling middle road gameplay like RO2 did.

Of all these I am looking forward to Festung Europa the most, followed by PR Cryengine 3. Traction Wars looks good, but I am not sure how the final gameplay will turn out.

I loved BF2 I havent played it in probably 5 years never touched BF3 or BF4 because neither looked better then BF2 which imo is the best in the series. I could care less about graphics, this thread makes me want to reinstalled BF2 just to try this mod out now....
