Battlefield 4 Beta Discussion

I always felt the player ran too fast in BF3. They slowed it down in BF4 which gives you the feeling the map is larger, takes more time to get around which I like.

For me BF3 missed that BF2 feeling...With BF4, Squading up with running with a group of Tanks over the last few weeks brought me closer to the BF2 feel in some aspects. Throw in the commander and we have a winner. I've enjoyed the crap out of this Beta and can't wait for the official release.

yeah i've had moments while playing the beta when i got that nostalgic BF2 vibe back. it always happened when my squad was working really well together. i also had a lot of non-BF feeling moments like when i'd check the mini map and one squadmate is sniping from a corner of the map and another is camping the enemy spawn and i'm out in the bay perfecting my jetski jumping skills.

as far as the amount of teamwork and Battlefield-ness i've personally witnessed it goes like this: BF2 > BF2142 > BC2 > BF:Vietnam > BF3 > BF1942
*i just fucked off in BF1942 like a kid on his first visit to a water park. so that one's my fault.

i get the feeling BF4 will land between 2142 and BC2.

I had this on preorder at Green Man Gaming, but I submitted a support ticket last night to cancel & get a refund. I put ~22 hours into the beta. I spent time unlocking all the weapons I could, played the different classes, etc. It was a lot of fun.

That being said, I want to be 100% sure they fix the crashes before I spend $60 on the game. I got confirmation from a few others while playing that I'm not the only one with periodic crashes on the killcam, but there would be times where 3-4 times in a row, the game would crash. I'm not dropping $60 on something that doesn't run properly.

I'll probably wait and see if it goes on sale around black Friday like it did last year. If I can pick it up for $30-35, I'll probably do so, and hopefully they have the remaining kinks worked out by then. Otherwise, I guess I'll be waiting til everyone else already has the cool guns

Remember all of the crashing problems with BF3 on release too? DICE always puts out VERY rough products. Crashing, server disconnect, aint nobody got time for that!

I hated it the feel at first but after getting used to it I think I'm satisfied enough to pre-order it...I really like how they added some much needed cool down to the vehicle ammo it seems like they've made more of an effort to balance vehicles. I'll be happy if this is true about the jets also, the only vehicle type we have not seen yet and hopefully they removed the ability to fly around like a blimp without stalling out.

BF3 kind of felt like if you weren't driving an APC, tank, chopper or plane you were helpless, they seemed to have done a better job of integrating/blending the meta-game of vehicle warfare with infantry warfare. Also haven't seen much of the hit detection lag that was obvious is BF3 where you're behind cover.

Only thing that really bothers me still is the ever present washed out look.

As I think about it more, I mind the tank reloads less. Instead of the tank being this infinite ammo spewing behemoth, launching tank shells at any random bush or single infantryman, you use the MG for infantry and the main gun for armor. I think it could create a bit of a better balance between the vehicles and infantry.

This was forced on the community because there were so many armor whores that just camped in armor and couldn't do shit else and infantry at times where helpless. This is a balance measure. While unrealistic it gives the infantry a fighting chance. I say bravo. If you (not specifically you twisted) complain it's because you're a tanker whore.

Same with attack heli's on the rockets :)

"While unrealistic"? What's unrealistic about tanks not having an inexhaustible supply of ammo? Eventually you run out of shells.

I was speaking in terms of a different loading speed inexplicably out of nowhere. But I believe we are on the same side of the table here.

We are. Just wondering about the phrasing there. Thanks for the clarification.

I'm thinking they made certain limitations to make the upgrades/perks more usable. IE: An autoloader that eliminates the 4 shot capacity will be a huge bonus.

Kinda like what they did with guns. If they see one accessory being used way more than others, they tend to mess with them so they all get used more.

I played a tad more yesterday. I did have a blast at times. Although I forgot that you start with very little "fun" toys until you level up things.

It actually is more realistic and more balanced for more enjoyable game play at the same time.

Same with attack heli's on the rockets :)

Agreed..I was a bf2/bf3 chopper whore and I like the changes. The infinite rockets/infinite gun rounds reloading every few seconds was unrealistic and unfair and not fun if you were on the receiving end.

But can you switch seats mid-flight in the helos to rain down tv guided missles...

But can you switch seats mid-flight in the helos to rain down tv guided missles...

Sure if you want to be an easy target for the enemy's TV missile and everything else on the map. Not to mention attack boats will have TV missiles. If you've got leftover butthurt from BF3, well get it out of your head because that has little bearing in BF4. Its a whole new game with totally rebalanced vehicles and unlocks for anti-vehicle. Stop being a victim.

At work so I haven't had the chance to log in today to check, so is the beta done?

2 years bf1942
6 years bf2.
2 years and only 200 hours bf3 (hated it)
140logged hours in bf4 beta ton of fun

There seemed to always be a certain lvl of frustration with lag in BF3 that I could never really enjoy the game too long before raging. Same thing was present in one of the later BF2 patches where missiles would fly through objects and it would take multiple tries to reload a gun (this was the time I switched to COD). BF4 on the other hand has been a smooth experience.

Crap! I was enjoying it too.

On the bright side, only 2 more weeks and we get everything we didn't have in the beta -- all the maps, all the guns, all the vehicles, all the unlocks. Roofs of Shanghai was getting a little tedious, TBH.

 around 10hrs/day
you sir are hardcore.

:D
Yea, some friends along the way helped

I liked the map IMO best in the BF series last 13 years.
well designed, multiple tactics, can hide tank from chopper etc..
houses could be good spotting places and the tower taken down, I found it really well made with multiple tactics.

netcode is improved, still need to find a server where latency works for you.
low ping for me and I get one shotted, 40-60 and I was immortal (almost)
mechanics was good, tanks good machine gun for inf, shots reload made you save them for good shots. a good squad was hard to beat and required effort.
Its just better but time to kill is too fast still, I would like that to be increased a bit more.
not enough skill needed to kill IMO.

at age 49 soon 50 I find it fun and much better overall than BF3.
still called cheater by the kids. ;)
many roof wookies but its the way many want to play and levolution brings that to stop for most. team with those looses.

with friends and a squad we did have a great deal of fun.
look forward retail

Netcode improved and that sloppy code made BF3 lag behind and cause all kinds of issues.
its a totally different game with Bf4.

i'm with ya. i had a ton of fun with the beta and i'm looking forward to Oct 29th.

The engineer starter gun with Acog and handle upgrade thingy makes it a fairly nice gun.

Agreed. I played all the kits except assault. The support U-100 or whatever is nice. The MX4 is killer. The recon was useless for me because I don't usually snipe, so until I get a carbine or something it won't be much fun. I did find it fun to drop C4 on vehicles from rooftops.

Plus, they really gimped the sniper. BF3 had the scope glint this has the laser tracer, wtf is that. It's bad enough with 3d spotting, but damn.

All I gotta say is I enjoyed it, but give me hardcore mode.

Cripes. I'm sold on BF4. I was waffling on purchasing it until today when I realized I can't play the beta. Snap! Withdrawls already!

My 2 cents: (because it makes me feeeeeeeeel better)

- Netcode noticeably better. Still some small lag behind cover/around corners but much improved.

- Tank reload good, spitball shells bad. I had many times where the shell wouldn't even explode on the wall/ground when firing. Shooting at soldiers with the shell is near pointless. Lock-on missiles need to be fired up and at short ranges unless you have a laser to attach to.

- Wacky 1-shot sniper rifle on C flag at the beginning of the game. Holy insta-gib Batman! Seems kinda gimmicky to have these one-off pick up guns here and there. Not a fan.

- Chopper reloads seem about right. Those Air-to-air missile/flare battles in BF3 were just dumb. Now it's get on with it and kill each other! No more mass-raping with competent pilot/gunner. Now a good combo can certainly turn the tide, but can no longer dominate with bunch kills.

- Gun play doesn't feel quite as fun as in BF3. The guns available in the beta seem to lack some punch. I don't know if that's an audio thing or visual thing. It just feels a little off. I thought BF3 was awesome in this regard.

- Destruction! Certainly better, but still feels like it's holding back. It's great to see so many cover options that are penetrable by only certain rounds.

- Hey DICE, do you hate medics? Do you? We now have like 2.5 seconds to revive a dead guy. Stop that nonsense! Of the 40 or so hours I plopped into the beta, I kid you not, I was revived FOUR times. Each time I'm like, what is this goofy accept/reject menu? Did my game just crash? It's a crying shame that paddles are just .... gone from this game. Add to that they don't work 100%, either. Sad, sad, sad.

- Obliteration seems like a nice change of pace mode but like someone else said, it's a troll's paradise once said troll gets the bomb. Lots of running in this mode. I feel like I'm training for a triathlon.

- Graphics are not a done deal, I know, but once the tower crumbles that map is horrendous looking. I'm all for "realism" but to me sometimes realism trumps fun and that's no fun. The map is gorgeous while the tower is up. To hijack a Christopher Walken quote: "I've got a fever!! And the only cure is more gray!" Bleh I know it's just one map and I've seen the screenies and vids of the other maps. They look pretty snazzy.

- Knifing is even more fun if that was possible. I even successfully defended a frontal knife once. Cool!

- Who did the UI? Mr. High Contrast Windows 98 Theme Creator? Everything is black and white and difficult to navigate. Sure I got used to it over time but it sure looks dated.

- Did anyone else struggle to track unlocks and what you need for what? I'm even more confused in BF4 battlelog than I was in BF3. And what's a battle pack? Should I care?

- I miss the class perk upgrades. I know we have field upgrades now and I do like the attempt at rewarding good squad play in real time. But are the perks randomly assigned? Sometimes I see ammo, sometimes I see nades. Do the BF gods choose this?

- Audio is AGAIN improved. How do they keep upgrading the audio with every BF iteration? It's amazing what they do with sound. It's so much more directional and the contextual soldier commentary is brilliant. Explosions are so awesome and all the little environmental noises are impressive. I just wish they would have kept the gun audio - see above comment.

- After their second to last patch the game became near BF3 performance. Most impressive. I assume that some of that performance will take a hit once the final graphical touches are inserted. (I hope that doesn't make an ass out of u and me.) So happy I don't *need* to upgrade my machine to get great playable framerates.

- As I mentioned in another post, I miss my hardcore. To me it's the best BF experience to be had. I know they reduced the floating, glowing triangles (down to line of sight now) but boy does that annoy me. To each his own.

I'm still not going to pre-order the game, but if the initial freak-out issues are nailed down by Cyber Monday this game will hit my Origin at a discounted price. Looking forward to it!

An ACOG on that thing? That gun is pretty useless an inch past medium range, so I don't see why you'd put such a large scope on it. You get up close and personal with that thing. The time-to-kill on that weapon is ridiculous because of it's fire rate.

Not like your missing out on much, with waiting for a discounted Premium you'll get China Rising, I'll you're missing is the Gold Battle Packs which I'm really hesitant about.

Yeah its called no more medic "revive trains." Nothing worse in BF3 than mowing down 5-6 guys and they're all back up 2 seconds later thanks to unlimited instant-revive spam. Now killing someone actually means it.

But it's still too ridiculous the way they have it now. They've gimped the "team" role that the assault holds way too much. Now, the only thing you're good for pretty much is healing yourself, and that doesn't promote teamwork. BF3 was too much on the revive goodness, but BF4 beta was too little. There definitely needs to be a balance between the two.

The Assault's medic box—I don't know why the Assault class is also the Medic class, it's inherently overpowered—wasn't included in the beta, but will be unlockable just like the Support's ammo box was. As it is, the beta Assault's medic pack could still heal the first person who touched it.

The Assault is still the BF equivalent of the Terminator, he just can't practice Archvile-style necromancy anymore.

Also, the complaint about not being able to revive to 100% health is false. You have to charge the paddles before reviving to bring a person back at full health.

DICE confirmed that the revive timer is bugged in the beta. It'll be longer in the full game. That said, there will still be the 6 second cooldown after 2/3 revives to stop medic trains.

OMG going back to play BF3 feels so weird...it feels cartoonish now after playing BF4......
