Battlefield 4 Beta Discussion

I figured it's more to due with the OS, yeah. Hopefully the final release works just as well on Win7 as it does on 8/8.1. Though I've read DICE saying dx11.1 (stupidly exclusive to Win8+) will be the faster path so I figured spending some money now on Windows 8 Pro to alleviate a temporary problem isn't the dumbest thing I've ever done, hehe (especially for the price I paid thanks to a kind [H] member).

Once Mantle is out I wonder if win 7/8 will have a difference on amd cards.
and yea win 8 has faster paths which win 7 could have patched but microsoft wont do it.

I'm running Windows 7 without any issues since the last two patches. The beta release is running flawlessly on 7 so I'll venture a guess that the final version will see similar performance. I understand you're needing to justify your purchase but updating to 8 isn't necessarily the answer for everyone having performance issues.

He isn't justifying his purchase, he's stating his experiences. Windows 8 is faster than Windows 7 for this game.

The latest patch has allowed me to run it as smooth as butter as well on my Win 7 pc. I'm glad Dice continues optimizing it. Another video card driver update or so may even improve on that.

Correct. His post however was in relation to receiving stutter, jitter, and various other graphical hitching that was taking place prior to patches released by Dice. Since the patching took place there have been zero issues running 7. We aren't discussing frames per second but the stability of the game which has been solved.

I'll need to see what "faster" implies in order to contemplate the upgrade to 8. I'll of course wait until the game is released and hopefully [H] will run benchmarks showing us the real world benefit, if any.

I'm sure all the top sites will be reviewing BF4 when it's released, then once more in December when they roll out Mantle support. Interesting times ahead

Definitely. I hadn't even read about Mantle until recently. Looking forward to possibly more info at the AMD Developer Summit. :D

No, I'm not justifying my purchase of Windows 8, so your shallow generalization can stay on the playground Satarel. Furthermore, contrary to what you said, again I'm not sure why you're so off base in regards to my situation, I did play the beta throughout all 3 patches on Windows 7. Ultimately the only avenue that "alleviated" the performance was moving to Windows 8.

Lastly, according to DICE, as well as compounded by the fact that dx11.1 is relegated to Windows 8, it's safe to assume which operating system will give the best performance in BF4. As of right now the only outlier will be how mantle performs on AMD hardware.

I'm not making any assumptions until I see benchmarks. That DICE dev tweeted out a very broad generalization about Win8 "being fastest because of DX11.1" (and fuck Microsoft for their continuing DirectX paywall bullshit btw) but we don't know what that means in numbers. Are we going to see a 1% increase? 5%? 25%?

Like I told my friend who wondered if he "needed" Win8 for BF4 - which would cost him $179.99 + Tax at Newegg - better to wait for retail benchmarks and if a performance delta actually exists but is less than say 10% (which is extremely optimistic) then he's better off putting the money toward a GPU upgrade which will improve all his games. One example.

It wasn't general at all, it was quite specific that until they roll out Mantel support, Windows 8 is going to hold a performance advantage in this game. The only thing they weren't specific on is the actual performance difference, but that's still better than a completely random assumption of 10%

I understand where you're coming from, but you're criticizing that statement by saying its too "general" but the only counter you have is something that's complete speculation, which is far more vague then a general statement.

I'm not saying everyone should go out and upgrade to Windows 8, I just find it amusing that a handful of people try so hard to KEEP people on Windows 7.

I highly doubt that with directx the performance difference between 7 and 8 will be too great. I can't imagine them alienating an entire population just to try to drive Windows 8 adoption. But then again, who knows. Its a conspiracy!!!

I can't imagine them alienating an entire population just to try to drive Windows 8 adoption.

As if DICE cares about Windows 8 adoption. They just took advantage of the latest version of DX. If there's a performance difference, it's because one version allows for it.

And yes, it's been shown already that BF4 performs better under Windows 8. The numbers are probably much closer after the most recent beta patch, but 8 should still have a lead.

Are you seriously just here to argue? This isn't speech and debate, people are just here looking for information on a new videogame.

And I find it amusing that a handful of people try so hard to tell people to spend money for a new version of Windows they don't necessarily need before all the facts are in. Unless you're an MS employee or investor or otherwise paid shill why is it so important? What's the urgency?

"Wait and see before spending your money" is the most common sense approach to anything last time I checked. How is this even an argument.

Well yeah, I am arguing a different perspective than you are actually. And yes, if you criticize a statement for being too general, and substitute it with pure speculation, it will be pointed out, even outside a speech class.

I'm not telling anyone to upgrade. It's a couple people, of which you are a part of, that throw tantrums when someone says that Windows 8 solved their issues. Why should the information that's given to people reading only consist of your perspective of waiting? Has it occurred that maybe someone having issues may WANT to play the beta? How about not wanting to shell out $60-70 and finding out the game doesn't run well for them, regardless of their OS. Or maybe they simply don't like the game? You don't think that these people may want to try the free beta with the free 8.1 preview that will give them the best chance of running the game properly?

It helps when you think outside your own little box.

Aww, touché my good man. Then is the performance difference large enough to warrant upgrading? Probably not. Windows 7 is probably more than fine, or will be by the time of the actual release.

I wouldn't upgrade from 7 to 8 until after the Mantle patch, after that we should have the most reasonable benchmarks to make proper determination.

I for one already am running Windows 8, but thats just me! :)

It's a forum, you should probably expect (and possibly appreciate) this before posting anything

Good stuff here!

Really that ppl are complaining about the map after the C skyscrapper collapses?

Thats exactly what happens when thousands of thousands of concrete explodes under friction during the collapsing. I really like the map, the rooftop campers are easily deal with and the game hopefully will deliver.

Obliteration game mode is probably the most fun i've ever had in a BF game.

After playing a lot of the beta, I uninstalled yesterday.

I am convinced that I am going to love the game. I just don't want to get a BF overload by the time the game comes out. My wife and I pre ordered the game, and we will start playing it the moment it comes out.

This time around, I will play the single player campaign first. For BF3, I didn't finish it until I was 300 hours into it. It was such a poor game (the SP I mean). I hope they do a better job this time.

Some friends and I were trying that mode last night. We got bored with it pretty quickly. Maybe it's just that the teams were really evenly matched, but the bomb spent most of the game within 100 yards of where it spawned.

once the bomb is in the water, you might as well just sit back and pick people off until it respawns.

I totally agree, I just hope the other maps work at least as well in that mode.

i know everybody has their own bro-story, but this happened last night:
- i picked up the bomb on the top floor of the skyscraper
- was getting ready to jump off but a teammate in a chopper came over and hovered off the edge of the building
- did a stallone-esque jump off the building and into the chopper
- pilot gets killed mid-air as we're nearing the last bomb site
- i parachute out and arm the bomb
- 2 enemies come in and kill me. easily i might add, i'm pretty slow these days with reaction time. i popped one round into one guy and that was all the fight i had in me.
- bomb blows before they could disarm and we win the game

that's my bro-story and it was bitchin, bro.

I had a pretty sweet event a last night:

Was on the Top floor of the sky scraper.
Enemy Attack Heli comes over and starts shooting rockets into the floor.
Enemy Attack Pilot idiotically jumps out of the attack heli for no reason.
I did a leap of faith as the heli is falling out of the sky, unmanned since he didn't have a gunner.
I pull my chute, drift over and jump in the enemy attack heli
Proceeded with a 12 kill streak with enemy heli before game was over.

Definitely one of my beta highlights. Wish I had it on video.

Yeah I felt the same way, just about to get my lvl 10 then I'm done, really don't want to get tired of it before it's out. I have to say as someone with an S.O. that never played fps'. Dang you're lucky! Seriously.
I had 5 buddies who pre bought Bf4. Come beta all but one cancelled...like wtf? One I helped "upgrade" his pc to a q6600 to no avail, GTA5 for him. The rest "don't have time". I was hoping for a nice mini lan for all of us. :(

Yes Beta is done on the 15th. As for free China Rising I would assume right up till release day you can get it. I asked an employee at EB games and that was the answer I got. Hell if they have more pre order codes and you're good with people at your game store I'm sure you can get it after release with luck.

It's amazing how the beta has colored the experience for me. I had zero intention of buying BF4 after how much I loathed 3 but I've had so much fun on the Shanghai map that I not only bought it, but am upgrading my box for the first time since 2010 as well.

And +10 for Obliteration. Huge fun.

Two quick questions about the beta/pre-order.

When does the beta end, the 15th?

And when does the free China Rising pre-order offer end? On the 15th as well?

Beta ends Oct. 15th

https://help.ea.com/article/battlefield-4-beta-information

China Rising pre-order offer is good until the game is released which is Oct. 29th, but this is kinda mood since you get early access to China Rising from Premium if you sign up for it.

I feel like Obliteration is going to be trolled to the point where no one will play it. If the guy who picks up the bomb just sits there or runs and hides, and doesn't participate in the premise of the mode, then there's really nothing you can do, especially if he's hiding high up on a rooftop or somewhere tough to access.

I've jumped out of the chopper on accident a few times pressing e instead of q when trying to highlight the enemy.
Sometimes I am able to press e again and get back in, but if the chopper is descending, I get killed by the rotors.

What does everyone think of BF4 vs BF3? I am a fairly decent BF3 player (around 800 SPM) and I will provide some thoughts:

1. I know DICE love's the so called "realistic" washed-out look, but it's even worse than BF3 in that regard.

2. Controls are about the same which is nice.

3. I prefer the map system of BF3. It allowed a super-small minimap, or you could blow it up in the corner to a great size, zoom in/out. Now you either have a mini-map with slow zooming, or a map that takes up your entire screen. Seems like a step backwards.

4. Every new BF game feels like they took a step to close the gap between good players and bad. I call this the "everyones a winner soccer-mom effect". A perfect example of this is vehicle's running out of ammo. Is this change really needed? In BF3 say in a solo tank, based on skill out could outgun and destroy 2-3 opposing tanks. Now I get four shoots before a huge reload time? Is that really necessary?

5. I really wish there was some Hardcore servers in the Beta. All of those silly bright icons all over the place make me want to stab my eyes out.

6. Assault has limited rezzing, another change to close the skill gap.

7. I do like the greater destruction in BF4 and weather. I thought BF3 was a step backwards compared to BF:BC2 in that regard.

8. The graphics to me don't really seem much better than BF3. I know it's a beta, but the CPU strain in some areas isn't commensurate with the in-game demand.

9. BF4 really needed a 128 player option on PC with the huge maps.

10. Commander mode; is someone really going to be sitting on their couch with an ipad clicking on icons versus actually playing the game? Really?

11. I do like the blood splatter effect better, but more gore overall would have been a plus. Tired of kid ratings and all of that jazz.

12. I do like spectator mode to check for cheaters.

13. The rubber band effect while driving vehicles over stuff is pretty bad. Hopefully just a beta thing.

14. Beeping vehicle health status is better than a vehicle health bar at the bottom right that requires you to take your eyes off the action.

15. Doesn't seem they have addressed camping much. Still half the players on any given map are just sitting on tops of buildings sniping.

16. I haven't really explored the option to have the game map open on a tablet or second monitor. Could anyone knowledgeable go over that?

To me it feels like BF4 is a sidegrade over BF3. It does some things better, some things worse. Not sure if I have more "fun" playing BF4. What are your guys thoughts?

Well, you're comparing a beta to BF3 plus all of its expansion packs.. I know you qualified 'I know it's a beta' a few times but there are things we haven't been able to experience yet like the full upgrade system, all the new weapons, the other maps and variations on 'Levolution' and stuff like that. So yes, some things are better and some maybe not, but with only a small taste of the content it's not an apples to apples comparison at all, aside from basic elements like UI and controls.

/I had to really crank down the gamma/brightness slider in BF4's options. Once I did that it looked much nicer, not so washed out.

/Man, I truly miss Project Reality from BF2. http://www.realitymod.com/

I just now noticed that the PR mod team is working on a stand alone Project Reality game based upon CryEngine. /fucking awesome, too bad BF mod tools were killed or we'd be looking forward to BF4 PR. //Thanks, EA.....

Since its inception over 8 years ago, Project Reality has built a large, dedicated community which has watched the mod evolve from a single forum post into one of the most successful and decorated modifications of its time. As Project Reality has continued to grow and branch out onto multiple game engines, one question has been continuously asked; Will Project Reality ever produce an independent game?

Well, today we are pleased to finally answer that question. The Project Reality team is proud to officially announce that we are currently developing a completely standalone PC game, Project Reality 2!

Project Reality 2 (or simply "PR2") will be a free to play multiplayer FPS PC game, based off of the critically acclaimed Project Reality modifications for Battlefield 2 and ARMA 2. Unlike our previous projects, PR2 will be a completely standalone game that will require no retail game to play. Our mission is to create the most realistic, immersive and demanding shooter within a virtual combat environment, focusing on encouraging teamwork through tactical gameplay.

/I'm still missing the 150 player matches we had in Joint Operations 8 years ago. The scope of the battles was insane.)

Anyone else think the solider voiceovers were better in BF3? I'm typically not one for swearing but the BF4 soliders seem to lack any enthusiasm in what they're saying.

We gotta make the soccer moms happy. No swearing you potty mouth! Also, you cannot have enthusiasm for killing. Killing is bad..

Tonight got about five disconnected from EA and server timeouts. It's simply amazing after all of these years the same stupid problems plague all DICE/EA games.

I just realized how ugly the water is in this game. Look at the water washing up on the shore of the fallen building. It's like purple goop. They should put in some transparency lol.
