Building a new system and attempting to update the firmware on a Samsung 840 Evo SSD and I get "Failed to update firmware on the selected drive" when I try to use the Magician software.

Tried using the ISO and get a disk read error that way.

Any tricks to get the firmware updated? Is it necessary?

I'm on EXT0AB0Q" and the Firmware Update tool shows that "A firmware update is available EXT0BB0Q".

Thanks, BIll

I have 1 830 SSD and 2 840s, never seen the problem before. I've always used the Magician software to update the firmware for all my drives and its worked fine. :(

Do you have Intel RST installed? With the ISO method, try booting from a USB stick (info can be found here).

I did install the Intel RST drivers. I'll try the USB method and see if that works.

That worked perfectly!

Thanks, Bill

How did you set up your USB drive?

I cannot flash mine in windows due to Samsung Magician not working with AMD ahci drivers.

Using a bootable DVD, I get errors. Tried a bootable USB drive, still errors.

I'm having problems too because of AMD compatibility. Can't update the firmware in Windows with Magician and tried creating a bootable CD and USB drive (using YUMI) with the ISO but it doesn't seem to boot.

i got "Failed to update firmware on the selected drive" when try update!
then i read AMD is not a supported driver!

create a file in notepad name it ahci-ide.reg click on that, turn off AHCI in bios, update you firmware, turn on AHCI, that help me update firmware.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci]
"Start"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\pciide]
"Start"=dword:00000000

I updated from the previously release to the new release on my 250 EVO

funny thing...it said failed on mine after it tried updating mine...so i rebooted and somehow the bios changed the boot order of my hard drives...set it back...booted pc back up and it said i had the latest firmware next time i checked....so go figure (i guess it updated even though it claimed to fail)
I think its just a bug with newest magician since its always updated firmware no problem on mine in the past
