So lets get this strait. In September AMD paper launched their next generation. Most of their next generation is a rebrand (all but 2 models?). The real next generation cards will be released in late November. They paper launched a rebrand, then released the cards 2 weeks later. The only real new card will come out 2 months later. I could not think of a worse release other than Duke Nukem Forever preorders 10 years before launch.

First, you want to launch with the highest performing card in a new generation. More people are likely to splurge and not wait for the lower gen. Second, paper launches are bad because it kills sales with current stock, now 2 full months of bad sales. Finally, rebrands are seen as deceitful to many consumers. I guess this is a result of the layoffs of PR and marketing in 2011.

Their business, their product, their rules.

You know that 2013 model car you bought last year? Guess what, the 2014 model is just a re-brand.

Look, at the end of the day, it's all creative marketing designed solely for one purpose, to separate your money from you. No doubt a business counts on confusion in the marketplace to benefit.

As long as no laws are being broken, this is pretty much business as usual.

OP...your obviously mad about something that's been going on for years by both camps. What triggered your inner fan boy?

My point was that it is bad business and I expect this launch will not be as profitable to AMD as it could be. Launching rebrands before flag ship sells less flag ship. Paper launching kills sales of current inventory, 2 months is a long time to do that for.

Not really mad. I just think it's dumb to paper launch a rebrand. I guess if I am mad, its because I have to wait for 290X reviews, its been a while since AMD/ATI released a beast monolithic GPU.

The only thing this launch was good for was the hype of Mantle.

What triggered my post was the launch of the rebrands and then rumors that 290X wont be around for another month. I don't plan on buying a new graphics card soon, but I am a tech news junkie.

My execution would have been Hype Mantle>Paper Launch > 290X > Rebrands

Where are you getting two months of bad sales from? And what cards are been released in November?

The 280X not only gets a big price cut, it gets newer generation coolers like NVidia's 700 series. It's a win-win for consumers.

The Asus 280X for example is $310 retail, and is faster than a 770, while running super cool and quiet. It's definitely an improvement over the 7970.

The 680 got rebranded as a 770 and the price went UP.

The 7970 gets rebranded as a 280X and the price goes DOWN.

Yeah, fuck AMD.

I love when people dive into something half-assedly and act as though they have everything pegged. The card launch is mid october ( not late november). Most of the generation is a rebrand, but as noted, they come with better coolers and a hefty price reduction (that is not a terrible launch choice by any means). You can't think of a worse launch? I can name a couple. Fermi (GTX4**) , Bulldozer and Sim City come to mind. I sincerely hope you're just trolling.

The GTX 770 uses different RAM, a different cooler, gets upgraded from Boost 1.0 to Boost 2.0, and is clocked significantly faster than the GTX 680 across the board.

It's a better, newer, faster part. Yeah, it's going to be priced higher than the GTX 680... otherwise GTX 680 sales would have taken an even larger nosedive than they already have.

The 7970 gets rebranded as a 280X and the price goes DOWN.
Re-releasing an old part with exactly the same performance doesn't warrant a price increase...

They didn't paper launch anything. They didn't even announce a release date or price.

Calm down.

It's hard to believe that AMD has made it this far without your know-how and expertise in graphics card marketing. Obviously they know nothing of how to run the company without you at the helm. They would be lucky to have even a whiff of any resume you threw in their general direction..

Also, I must point out that 40% of the words in his first sentence were spelled incorrectly. My Internet forum browsing experience would be greatly improved if someone would write a plugin to parse out any threads where the first post isn't constructed with a modicum of intelligence (at least proper spelling/grammar).

Are the prices different on my newegg page than everyone elses?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...57&IsNodeId=1&name=Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition

The price is going down a little and we are getting the new cooling solutions from the vendors (except Gigabyte, which sucks bc the one on my 770 is awesome). Why do people insist the price is no good for the new cards? Yes the base core clock is 50mhz lower but the boost is just as high if not higher on the rebrand cards and the memory is clocked higher. So essentially how can you be pissed that they lowered the price and updated the cooling? Just because they changed the name? Why don't you justify it by saying, well they have two new faster cards coming out soon, and they lowered the price across the board on existing products while giving you a shiny new exterior? It's not as if the 7970 (280x) is suddenly a crap card. But now you can get the new MSI TFIV or the new DCUII or the new XFX cooler for much cheaper!

I wish someone would write a plug-in that would filter out posts in threads that are completely irrelevant to the discussion and provides no value to the thread. By the way, welcome to the internet.

AMD has been a company for a long time and must be immune from criticism. They are doing great in the PR department; no system builders have dropped AMD hardware because of PR either.

I don't remember a launch that caused a system builder dropped a particular company's hardware.

The "criticism" lately has been ridiculous. For the past several weeks I've been reading post after post of bitching, whining, bullshit, and speculation about this launch. AMD fanboys talking it up and Nvidia fanboys talking it down. This is just another one of those threads. You and some of the others on this site and across the internet need to lighten up a little. Such a big deal about the hardware that allows us to play games. OMG, the sky is falling. LOL. Just let ALL the hardware at least make it to the shelves before making so many judgements. Sheesh.

@BreezeDM

Why don't you quit trolling and wait for the card to release then you can find something else to bitch about.

Has anyone found ANY information regarding the mobile cards being released? Are they just a rebrand of the 8970m (which apparantly was a rebrand of 7970m)? Or is it more of a significant step up.

Actually they re-rebranded. As the 7xxx series became the 8xxx series and now the R9 series. So far they have not had anything new in 2 years.

BreezeDM is definitely trolling. Oh well. Sadly he got me involved in it. Well played sir, now get the hell out.

Let me sum up this thread for everyone

Discussion on AMD launching current generation of graphics cards

Cons:
Paper launches are annoying to consumers and hurt sales in channel.
Launching rebrands first was a mistake because it will cannibalize sales of flagship.
Rebrands of previous generations cards into current one harms trust between company and consumer
AMD PR department has ignored small tier system builders, by not providing samples for integration and thus causes Origin PC to drop AMD graphics cards altogether.

Pro:
Apparently at least one person in the world does not have a problem/find it annoying with rebrands
We like the price drop of 7970 cause by this "launch"

WTF:
Breeze is poor at spelling
Breeze needs to chill out
U Mad BRO?
Nvidia did it too

I came to a hardware review site forum to talk about the launch of a popular type of hardware on the site, FMR?

I re-read your posts and NO you came to this thread for one thing only, to bitch about AMD, and worse now you have that troll Prime1 involved. good job.

This thread isn't about the 290X, its about AMD handling its launch of the same generation. I am sure 290X will be fine and sell really well in the long term especially with the BF4 bundle. AMD's handling of the launch thus far has been poor; see my previous statements.

Wow, before I even read the name of this user who posted this I was like 'this sounds like Unknown One, he senselessly finds ANYTHING HE CAN to spin around to make AMD the bad guy' and what so you know, LOOK WHO IT IS!

This is exactly my point. Your initial post was garbage and it has now spawned a garbage thread as a result. I understand that my post wasn't on-topic but it was at least thoughtful and hopefully you'll actually generate something novel before clicking "new thread" again.

I'm betting that "posts in threads that are completely irrelevant to the discussion" don't happen nearly as often when the OP presents something insightful on an interesting subject. I'm guessing most of the threads you start degenerate into exactly what's happening here.

That makes you garbage. Your post was not any of those things. The thought you put in it was "me no like poor spelling" and regurgitated the same post you probably post continuously. Excuse me if I don't take advice on how to make a thread successful from someone who goes around to threads to complain about spelling with spelling and grammar errors in the posts themselves.

I see you've missed my point. Allow me to try again.

It's not that I dislike poor spelling; I didn't like the thread you created. It put forth nothing interesting and basically served as flame bait for the forum. I came up with what I believe to be a clever way to filter out most threads of this nature by filtering out any where the original post contains spelling/grammar mistakes. By all means continue with your poor English, the plugin will work perfectly.

I was pretty careful not to make any spelling or grammar mistakes in this thread but I'm an engineer and writing was never one of my strengths in university.

Lastly, you have to admit that this plugin would be pretty cool. An automated way to filter out the "shit tier" threads would be awesome. I'm sorry that your thread served as inspiration.

Two can play this game, OP. Keep up the baiting though, you've gotten me to post and 2 pages so far.

Was just reading through the R9 page at AMD's website. The PowerTune description was quite amusing =)

"AMD PowerTune technology
Here is some more description text. It's just as awesome as the other description text. And like the link, the heading is quite nice. Once again, a good little bit of content."

Results after release should be interesting. I hope nvidia's response will be also, whatever it is in regards to Mantle.

That's hilarious! Serious marketing skills there. The amount of fuck ups with how the new cards have been reported on their own website... unbelievable..

I am not really concerned about Nvidia. Nvidia rebranding is bad. They definitely took a hit with the 8800GT, they rebranded a card with stuttering issues for 3 generations. Again, this thread is not about Nvidia vs AMD or about rebranding specifically (Apparently its about personal attacks to me and troll accusations). Rebranding by itself wouldn't have made this launch unusual. All the things put together made it a not optimal launch.

When you start a thread and just lie about paper launch and all other stuff maybe you need to know that nowhere can you find anything official about a launch in September.

This is what happened in September:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xo1jJJGhneg

Launch ?

Maybe you can take your lies somewhere else ....

They announced their impending series of graphic cards. They held an event and detailed the prices and cards. There wasn't another event for the rebrand launches and probably wont be for 290X. This is the event to garner attention for the generation. What else would be needed for you personally to consider it a paper launch?

So you are saying that you purposely trolled this thread because you didn't agree with the topic? What about my topic do you not agree with?

The plug-in would be trivial to make, you are a poor engineer. There are like 6 types of forums that are popular. It would be easy to get the threads links, open the page, search for spelling mistakes in first post, and remove thread link. It doesn't exist because there is a small percentage of people who care and no one wants to be the developer for that user base. In addition, you would get like 90% blocked. Horrible idea.
