LG's latest super phone, the G2. 5.2" 1080p, Snapdragon 800, 3000mAh...

I was going to get this phone until I saw the ars technica review about the changes to the Verizon version, especially the keyboard and fonts.

That was a poor review. The G2 has the AOSP keyboard built in that you can switch to. Also perhaps the font was off because the text size defaults to medium, change it to small and it's fine. Although italics don't show up correctly. They also gave the G2 crap for not having a recent apps button. While I agree it's odd that it's not an option, Samsung and HTC do not have a recent apps button either.

As I'm sure others have mentioned, the Ars and Gizmodo reviews should not be relied upon. Do more research if you are considering the phone.

Furthermore, I don't see why anyone cares what keyboard LG puts on the phone, since you can install any you like. And the LG skin supports like 5-6 different fonts.

I do agree that the third button should be a recent apps button. I installed pie to access it faster.

What's pie?

Ninja edit - holding down home brings up recent apps and task manager.

Yup, holding down home is the way you get to recent apps. It's doable, but my problem with it is that the hold takes too long and when everything on the phone is insanely fast, it really cramps the multitasking.

Pie control is an app that lets you swipe from an edge to bring up a radial menu, so you can, for example, swipe in from the right side of the screen and recent tasks button can appear. Let go and it goes into recent apps.

VZW variant:

1. Has wireless charging
2. Has more logos
3. Has different buttons on back, that are inferior (to make room for the wireless charging) because they have less tactile feedback to let you know what button you are on, which means more learning curve

That's the physical differences. So far no root tether app works.

Yeah, I know about the physical differences (which is annoying since now you have to get special Verizon G2 cases/accessories), I was just asking about software differences.

Only one that jumps out at me is that the ATT version has CarrerIQ and surprisingly the VZW one doesn't. :p

I'll let you know if I remember any others, but it would most assuredly be minor. As for the VZW accessories, I had no problem getting the skin I wanted for VZW, and the only other accessory I got was this sweet piece of ass:

http://www.tylt.com/vu/

which I wouldn't have been able to get if it wasn't VZW.

Yeah, I saw that, lol. So does the G2 have any sort of native "Blocking mode" or quiet hours like the GS4 has that Verizon removed from their device? I'm just trying to figure out if Verizon is deliberately removing these call blocking features from their phones in order to push their own service or if it's just them haphazardly changing things as it seems they like to do. If the G2 has this functionality natively, then I'm hoping that the Note 3 will retain it this time or that future updates for current Samsung phones will include it. It's not an issue on my Note 2 since I'm rooted/ROM'd anyways with all the other TW features, but my wife's GS4 isn't able to be unlocked/ROM'd and they removed that nice Blocking Mode from the GS4, which is highly annoying as it's a nice feature to have.

Also, that's a damn nice wireless charger. I would consider getting one for my Note 2 if it wasn't friggin $70. For $70, I think I'd rather take 2 seconds and plug a cable into my phone and retain the ability to hold it while it's charging.

There is a Night Mode which also supports a whitelist of contacts that can bypass it. You can schedule it to run each night. It does auto-replies to silenced numbers, and supports passing the number through if it calls multiple times.

As for the charger, I bought it because:

1. It's a hot piece of ass.
2. My wife is a light sleeper and when I fiddle around with a charger at night before bed with the light off it can wake her.

There's a rom up on XDA now for VZW that removes all the bloatware from LG and VZW (reduces skin size from 2.5 GB to 1.04 GB), unlocks tethering, and roots while maintaining all of LG's skin features and functionality.

This is compelling enough of a reason for me to load up TWRP later and throw it on.

Seen this yet?

Yup, gonna flash the Blackhole ROM later on and then add that mod in for extra sexyness.

I'll still use Pie though as a duplicate menu. I have small hands and find it useful in aiding one-handed operation (putting a radial menu on right side of screen when holding phone in right hand with thumb resting near there).

Has anyone gotten the Wireless Storage to work? When I enable it, it tells me to type an IP into my browser and sign in. When none of my internet browsers could open the IP, I looked around at XDA and found people saying to use Windows Explorer to open the address. The problem is, when I type an IP address in WinExp, it just opens a tab in Chrome...which again, can't open the address. Anyone have any tips? I'd really like to get this feature working since it seems like it would be really useful.

Like you are browsing to a shared folder on a network.

Yes, use the \\ in Windows explorer. It's pretty slow so not a substitute for wired transfer for any video/music transfer, but a nice feature nonetheless.

MKBHD's review of the G2 came out yesterday. Pretty much what I thought about it from reading other reviews and seeing other vids about it; great hardware, ugly (but not bad) software. Fortunately software can be changed, so I think this phone would be near-perfect with a good theme/ROM on it. Verizon's slight hardware changes are off-putting to me too even though they're relatively minor, but it still limits the cases/accessories that are compatible with it compared to every other G2 variant. I would still prolly take one over my Note 2 though, but I'm almost set on the Note 3 as of right now unless the Nexus is miraculously available on Verizon.

Personally (and others have also reported) I've found the transfer speeds over network share to be faster than MTP USB connection.

Same here on my Note 2 and wife's GS4, which is sad/horrible. Fortunately I can use USB mass storage on my Note 2 since it's rooted. Very annoying that Google removed that from Android.

Hmm, I'll have to investigate again later and report my findings. In other news, I put TWRP on it and flashed the clean ROM and then the recent tasks mod. Life is good.

From what I understood, devices that don't have an SD slot can only access and transfer data to/from the storage device via MTP/PTP.

This is from a post I read awhile back on the matter:

ICS supports USB Mass Storage (UMS). The Galaxy Nexus does not. This is the same scenario as Honeycomb, as for instance HC supports USB Mass Storage while Xoom does not.

If a given device has a removable SD card it will support USB Mass Storage. If it has only built-in storage (like Xoom and Galaxy Nexus) it will (usually) support only MTP and PTP.

It isn't physically possible to support UMS on devices that don't have a dedicated partition for storage (like a removable SD card, or a separate partition like Nexus S.) This is because UMS is a block-level protocol that gives the host PC direct access to the physical blocks on the storage, so that Android cannot have it mounted at the same time.

With the unified storage model we introduced in Honeycomb, we share your full 32GB (or 16GB or whatever) between app data and media data. That is, no more staring sadly at your 5GB free on Nexus S when your internal app data partition has filled up -- it's all one big happy volume.

However the cost is that Android can no longer ever yield up the storage for the host PC to molest directly over USB. Instead we use MTP. On Windows (which the majority of users use), it has built-in MTP support in Explorer that makes it look exactly like a disk.

First significant complaint with mine -- it blows out bright spots in night shots really badly.

Does anyone know if a camera app that might help mitigate that?

Noticed some focusing issues with mine. I wasn't sure if it was me or the camera though. Anyone else having issues?

No issues with my camera. Camera app has been excellent for me. I just use the intelligent auto mode.

I was going to wait for news about the Nexus 5 before ordering anything, but my Gnex kicked the bucket the other day. So I decided to pull the trigger for the G2 for T-Mo instead. I've had the same phone for two years now... that's never happened since I bought a G1 way back when it came out. Needless to say, I'm quite looking forward to it.

It seems as though root is no problem with this phone, nor will flashing roms/kernerls be. That was really the only thing that would have held me back. Hopefully with the phone being on all four carriers, it will end up in the hands of plenty of developers (and be easy to port between different versions).

From reading the thread, it seems like this is the most open new phone on Verizon currently.

I'm loving my T Mo. G2 so far. The battery life is unreal. The camera is top notch, and works great for even a novice like myself.

My absolute only gripe is the speaker volume. When I'm at work I wear it inside a holster and on the job site with construction equipment going in other rooms I can't hear it ring. I never had this issue with my Bionic. I've tried a couple apps to make it louder, but they don't seem to do anything to the ringer volume.

Those are the two things that drew me to it. The battery life on my Gnex is horrible. Even with the extended battery, I usually have to charge the phone twice a day, or else swap out the battery. I took a trip to NYC recently and it was a nightmare. I had to use Google Maps to get walking/public transit directions pretty much everywhere I went. I would carry three batteries on my at all times and usually would still have to be careful to not drain all three by the end of the day.

Battery life was of the highest importance when choosing a new phone. The non-removable battery sucks, but I'm hoping it won't be an issue. As for the camera, that's my other big gripe with the Gnex. The camera is terrible and pretty near useless. The G2 camera looks great. Maybe not quite as good as the S4, but it'll be a huge leap for me.

Since you have the T-Mo version, which is what I've got coming, can you tell me if bluetooth tethering is enabled? I use that daily in my car. I need some sort of tethering, but BT is ideal because when my phone connects to my cars BT it will automatically pull an internet connection without me having to manually turn it on/off like a wifi hotspot.

Not sure on that as I don't tether off it.

I actually like the quality of pictures taken on the G2 a bit better than my wifes S4, but I've had limited time with both phones. I just got both of them on Tuesday night.

LG G2 Review

Written review;

WoW, this G2 is now on my list of next phones. I dropped and broke my Nexus 4 last month, back to an old HTC, was gonna wait for the Nexus 5, but this G2 is getting just AMAZING reviews, might go for the G2 over the N5.

The battery life on the G2 is said to be insane  Can go 2 days, ad easily last one full day on heavy use. And the rumors of the Nexus 5 only having a 2300mAh battery compared to the G2's 3000mAh, makes me want the G2 more, plus it having a slightly larger screen.

I do not consider myself a power user and I can say that the G2 will not make it 48 hours (or even 36) on a single charge. I can get a days use easily but it always needs a charge that evening.

hmm, I've come home from work and been at >75% battery. I get sporadic use throughout the day. Typically an hour or so of browsing/pandora/youtube and about 20 minutes or so of texting and calls. I'm really thinking I could use it at work 2 full days on a single charge.

Yes, with minor tweaks the battery can last 1.5-2 days with average use during a workday. It's pretty clear that it has an excellent battery.

I recommended this phone to a friend who wants to buy this for Sprint. I saw pre-orders start on Oct 11, does anyone have an idea when they will actually launch?

I played with one at the t mobile store today, if I was in the market for a phone this would be a no brainer to pick up

This phone looks like it should weigh a lot, but it doesn't weigh ANYTHING, what the hell?!

What's the general opinion on LG's UI on this?

The LG skin is good. 99% of the annoying stuff can be disabled. It's very fast, none of the features slow it down. And some of the features are useful enough that I would not trade it for AOSP. The rest is just a bunch of customizations...half of them being the same customizations that people usually flash ROMs for in the first place.

You really shouldn't consider the LG skin a factor in the decision. You can either accept my arguments, or eventually put on AOSP. Development on the G2 is already good, and I'm sure the fact that the Nexus 5 will be on the same platform will mean faster AOSP.
