State of Decay. Coming to PC.

apparently its already out in New Jersey. Oh wait nvm thats just New Jersey.

Silly because you'd miss out on plenty of great gaming experiences simply because of a control bias. While I agree most games are better suited to M&KB, there are simply a massive amount of games that are better suited to controller and are designed for them. Kingdoms of Amalur is one that immediately springs to mind as being a much more fluid and enjoyable experience with controller. Not to mention a ton of racing games.

it's got nothing to do with bias, I don't understand why people always get so defensive about this. what you're saying is it's ok to fail at implementing a proper control scheme for the mechanics in your game. games like KoA feel so great on thumbsticks because they're easy and you don't have to aim, apathy and incompetence with devices that should excel at them doesn't make it right. this thread isn't about platformers and racing games, it's about a game with functions that need to pick arbitrary coordinates on the screen.

Having the option of both controller and M&KB simply makes sense for any gamer.

nonsense, I don't get why you felt the need to throw that in there. if I like to play games with controllers, then why should they penalise those who don't? and if I don't play games that would be more suitable for controllers, then why should I buy one? see it's your bias, not mine.

Still arguing over a temporary problem on an early release? C'mon folks. Relax. If no KBM bothers you wait for the final version. It's that simple. :)

No argument here at all. I'm not even sure why mas thinks I'm being defensive :)

Not sure how utilizing both control configurations could possibly be called having a bias either :p

Excellent surprise for the end of the week.. I know now what I will be doing this weekend :D

I know -- gonna have to figure out how to play GTA5 and SOC at the same time.

GTA V does not exist for me until PC version is announced.

SoD will be in the limelight this weekend. All other plans have been declared null and void :)

I dunno.. that's a long time to wait for a very good game. And PC version may not every be announced.

Well, if they don't release a PC version in the next 6 months or so, or announce that they aren't, I can just pick up GTA V on sale for a lot cheaper then. :p

I was all in until I found out there wasn't any multiplayer. Still looks like it may be a solid game though, just not for me.

Early Access is open on Steam now.

If you don't have a controller or don't want to use one to play it, just wait for the official release later this year.

People on the Steam forums are saying that there is some kind of keyboard support if you can figure out the key mapping. No idea if its true or not, just passing along info.

$20 is all anyone has to pay from here on out. Seems like a bargain to me.

Got a copy for my GF who really wanted to try it. So I'll just try it while she's at work. :p

EDIT: Just played around a bit...is the game ridiculously dark for anyone else? Seriously, when I got into the ranger station I could barely see anything.

Also, getting some noticeable (though not unplayable) framerate slowdowns...I assume it's just a port thing that will be optimized as progress continues on the game.

Overall though, for an alpha/beta/whatever straight out the door, it seems to work pretty well.

Yeah I had to turn the gamma up to 1.20 because it was too dark, but it looks fine after doing that.

Performance is great here, hasn't dropped below 60fps once yet. 1920x1080, Ultra setting.

Yeah, like I said it wasn't unplayable but it definitely went below 60 for me a few times even with nothing going on.

Yes, there is rudimentary KB & M support. However, turning the camera with the mouse is exceedingly slow. There might be some ini settings to crank it up. Will have to investigate more.

Game is pretty sweet. Kinda wish the textures were a little better, but for a console port it's alright. The scope of the world is pretty vast...seems like a lot to see and do.

So I'm getting a bug where every time I load my game in SoD, every character's equipped gun gets reset to 1 round regardless of what I left the game with.. that's making survival kinda rough lol.

Been playing for a few hours. Absolutely zero problems. If this really is the beta then it's a GREAT beta. Off to play some more! :D

Wow you guys...reallllllly liking this game. Just started building and fortifying my base (the church) and have just been going out and about looking for supplies and what not. Look for gun shops!

BE WARNED!!! IF YOU DIE IT IS PERMANENT!!!

You can circumvent this by ALT+F4'ing RIGHT as you die or else the game will save and thus you are SCREWED! I was able to avoid this on the quickness with my main character (one that is very leveled up...ain't havin that shit I don't care if it's realistic/right or not!) and loaded the game back up and everything was fine.

Whew! Either way, even if the ending or whatever sucks, the fun I've had from it so far is definitely worth $20. Has also been a 99% bug free game (only issue so far is the lady RIGHT next to the church that has all the ammo...can't talk to her, pressing "Y" doesn't work) and is EVERYTHING I could want from a zombie survival game. DayZ may be more realistic but State of Decay definitely takes the cake in the "Fun Department".

That's one of the MAIN points of the game. The game doesn't "end" if you die, you aren't meant to be "this character" but instead it is focused on the group aspect of surviving.

If the character you are controlling dies you will take over as another character in your group who was on good terms with your other character (IE "friendly" in their status, which you get from doing missions with/helping them).

If you just reload every single time someone dies you are kind of missing out on a point of the game.

What happens if everyone dies? Perma-game over?

Yep, game deletes itself from the harddrive/ssd and flags the game key as being used up/not usable anymore. I hope this doesn't catch on in other games. Don't want to pay more than once for one game.

Is this a bug or by design?

Lulz.

For real, though. Does it just revert to a previous save, or do you have to start over?

Perhaps...but it's the way I like to play it and it doesn't ruin anything for me. Plus in all honesty when I died this last time (and it was my first and only time so far) I died because I got bum rushed by randomly spawned zombies as well. The area was clear when I entered it after disposing of the 2-3 zombies in the building then all of a sudden at least 10-12 came literally out of no where and overwhelmed me.

SO if the game was FAIR in this aspect and the zombies that you see in an area where simply the zombies in that area and they didn't randomly spawn then I wouldn't have a problem.

Basically, if the game isn't going to be fair then why should I be expected to play it fairly?

I think the only point Stiler was making is that the game is not designed as a "play as one main character" approach seen in most games. You're intended to take control of multiple people as you play, and just as in most zombie films/books/etc, people die, it's part of the "story" of your game that evolves as you play.

Of course if you can't stand that you can just alt-f4 or whatever, no one is forcing you either way. :) Yes, perma death in games can always be ruined by a bug/lag/you had to answer an important phone call and forgot to pause etc.

Well I've been playing DayZ for a looong time now so perma-death is nothing new to me. However 99% of the time I die in that game it's for rather legit reasons. This game however? Not going to let a horde that spawned inside the building I was in ruin my character that I was playing with the previous six hours. Just not going to let that happen. In other words, fuck that shit!

If I ran into a building that I KNEW was infested like a mofo and then died just because I went into a gun fight with a knife made of Play-Doh then the perma-death would be warranted.
