China will be joining a very exclusive club this year with the landing of their rover on the moon, searching for rock samples. The unmanned Chang'e-3 moon landing mission will be launched sometime later this year.

Once there, however, the Chinese government has said it plans to build the first manned lunar outpost, an objective NASA has already abandoned. ®

Perhaps it is best someone else fund manned exploration off planet. Russia, and the US can't really afford it. And it is not like our spies will not insure we reap the benefits of China's space exploration the same way much of the world profited technologhically from our space exploration due to their own spies.

lol, "technologically". I hate spell check, but sometimes it saves you from looking like an idiot that can't spell.

To be honest they have a better shot at mars than the US.

They have a few billion people to spare. And losing a few people in the process won't raise mass protests like it would in the US or even Russia.

Boy, I'd hate to be the first Chinese lunar astronaut to build a base.

They can't even get the instructions for a backyard grill right ...

Can we get them to drive the rover to our flag so we can shut the faked-landing loons up.

Who's to say that can't be faked either?

THat said the Moon is a big ass place, unless they land literally at the same spot they're not going to be able to see the flag :D

lol if they drove the rover to our flag they would probably pick it up and bring it back and sell it in walmart.

Perfect place for a missile base.

Smaller missiles required. Liquid propellents would stay cold if insulated right.

Next Foxconn factory location? One place to work, nowhere to run, nowhere to hide!
hey, someone had to say it. ;)

The flags on the Moon are all white, the Sun has bleached them all.

Are they planning on returning to the earth?
a day before the rover touches down, cue news report accidently released by state news agency... with video and everything, the same scenario as 2008.

Have you seen the special effects in the 60's? They sucked.

Flat earth people....

And you would definitely need much less fuel and power in order to hit a target on earth.

Neil deGrasse Tyson have made many good points about the benefits the space program brings, you can hear about them in his senate hearing video. Some of the important benefits comes from the impact such program can have on the culture, which is something you cannot steal.

Sure you can use espionage to steal their tech, but whatever you steal will be yesterday's news while all the smart people in China would be plotting a course for Mars. It would be a reverse of what's happening now where US innovates and China are trying to copy. It's better to have a scientifically literate culture that innovates rather than just trying to steal other's innovation.;)

Sustaining Americans in yet another inhospitable foreign environment is just too much. We already have our hands full with Afghanistan.

What we would most likely see is shitty replicas on sale for $.99. And a cheap red knockoff with a hammer and sickle planted in its place.

They want to build a manpost on the moon?Whats next?..."made on the moon by china" instead of just made in china?I could see it now, fake iphone 6 "made on the moon"..

Space travel in search of the unknown to advance human civilization is a beautiful thing. Go China. Hopefully many world leaders will be inspired to make good decisions for the improvement of mankind.

No French would buy it. Everyone knows that they already have one in every home. :p

You can never have too many white flags in France :p

The French government announced after the recent bombings that it had raised its terror alert level from Run to Hide.
The only two higher levels in France are Surrender and Collaborate. The rise in the alert level was precipitated by a recent fire which destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively disabling its military.

good for them -- what would be REALLY nice is if they started another space race and re-ignited our love of exploration as a country.

Pull ever man, machine, and dollar out of all this foreign occupy bullshit, apply it to our infrastructure and space program here.

Seriously, our bridges, electrical lines, sewers, and data networks all need MAJOR renovation, too bad some asshat would rather spend that money flying food/troops/material to the other side of the world helping defend nations that hate us.

You literally just compared Afghanistan to Space Exploration?

One can only hope that the "cold war" of a space race would reignite a desire to go where none have gone before. The money argument is a farce. If we explored more and made war less where would our country be?

Not to fear we re already there. You know, around the back side living with the ET's.

Meh, whatever, North Korea already has a moon base, and a statue of Kim Jong-un. Oh, and it has missiles and fighter space ships just waiting to destroy the West. Only by Kim's mercy do we still live.

The same technology to send a capsule up in space and bring it down successfully where you want it is the same technology to lob a warhead wherever you want it from an ICBM.

We certainly need another space race. As a species we won't advance nearly as quickly as when we are pushing our limits. And nothing will push those limits like space.
