Yeah I know I'm late to the party but better late than never.
What do i need to know? mods tweaks etc?

A vanilla playthrough is an amazing experience without mods. If I may I'd recommend only using graphic mods for your first playthrough then start looking at the plethora of amazing mods out there for your additional playthroughs.

I would also suggest a vanilla playthrough first. The game has a lot to offer in its plain state. The only thing I would suggest tweaking right off the bat would be the UI. Look at the SkyUI mod and install that.

Then it's a good thing that Skyrim is a steamworks title, isn't it?

Da fuq are you talking about dude?

educate me

scratched this title off my list because I won't have origin on my box

I would play through without mods first time, make sure you download the HD texture pack it doesnt download by default if I remember right should be listed under DLC its free.

You can also play the game fairly well with a 360 controller if you want.
I am finding I like to play with a controller more and more just kick back in bed and play on my 42 inch IPS panel is pretty relaxing.

Skyrim uses SteamWorks. SteamWorks is the DRM that utilizes Steam. As in http://store.steampowered.com/ . Origin is for EA titles. If you buy a box or digital copy of Skyrim you're going to end up with a code to enter into Steam to download or update Skyrim.

It has absolutely nothing to do with Origin or EA.

I second this. Play though at least the main story this way then go crazy with the mods. That's usually how I go about playing games like these that have a ton of different mods to try out.

I guess I'm retarded

I wonder how I got it in my head this was EA?

Thanks! guess I'll be heading over to steam...

Thirded. See the game in it's original glory and then go crazy on the mods. I think I have more hours sunk into Skyrim than any other game I've played.

More like, wait until the awesome anthology box drops to $10 on Steam.

even Arena?
yes.

and miss out on those kickass maps? No way.

Morrowind and maybe even Oblivion might have been that big of a time sink. Skyrim I just couldn't drop the same amount of time into.

At a minimum, install SKSE and SkyUI so you don't have to suffer with the default menus that were designed for consoles. These programs are covered in the existing Skyrim modding threads here.

Or, don't do anything and start playing for a few days, maybe the menus won't even bother you.

Personally speaking - and having not been into Skyrim and modding it all that long myself - I wouldn't play the vanilla game without these mods as bare minimum (my actual plugin list is much longer but these are bare minimum)

SKSE (standalone program)
Nexus Mod Manager (for 1-click installation and management of these mods)
SkyUI
HighResTexturePack01
HighResTexturePack02
HighResTexturePack03
Unofficial Skyrim Patch
Unofficial Heartfire Patch
Unofficial Dragonborn Patch
Unofficial Dawnguard Patch
Unofficial High Resolution Patch
BetterQuestObjectives (adds location detail to quest objectives which is sorely missing from vanilla game, doesn't break immersion - only saves you from pulling hair out)
Enhanced Blood Textures (once you've seen it, can't live without it)
Convenient Horses
UFO - Ultimate Follower Overhaul
Unread Books Glow (valuable books glow red, like those that increase skill points)

and still no Trogdor mod :(

For a first time play through, I'd just get some of the texture packs and the Unofficial Patches (since Bethesda, as always, has left most of the bug fixing to the mod community).

This is a good list. I'd agree... vanilla Skyrim is a bit boring. I would never play it unmodded.

Unofficial Patches, SkyUI, Unread Books Glow, Skyrim Redone, Reproccer, Balbor's Reproccer Patch, ASIS, High Level Enemies, and Immersive Armours and Weapons. Those are some of the best mods out there. ~grin~ Of course, only do this after you have played through Vanilla skyrim with some of the better UI mods. The difference is huge.

To all these people who are saying to play vanilla:

If you like a challenge at all, you'll want some mods. Even on the hardest difficulty, Vanilla Skyrim is just easy mode.

This mod is what i used to use to make things more challenging and rewarding. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/1269/?

Without it, mobs won't use health pots, healing spells, etc. They're all just stupid pushovers.

True, but it's hard to tell what exactly you want to change unless you've played Vanilla first. Each person may want a slightly different degree of change and it's hard to determine that without ever playing it.

BetterQuestObjectives (adds location detail to quest objectives which is sorely missing from vanilla game, doesn't break immersion - only saves you from pulling hair out)

Does this actually add locational detail to the text of the quests in your log? So you'd be able to find where to go based on what the objective says instead of having to follow the marker?

It's hard to determine when playing it, too. Since Draughrs seem to be everywhere and their level scaling makes it hard to figure out if you're doing well or poorly. Return of the Oblivion skeletons who take 15 hits at level 1 and 15 hits at level 40.

Yea I also turn off scaling, though i don't remember which mod did it.

Yes, that is the main point of the mod.

I second this list. It doesn't change the game experience at all, just fixes a lot of little glitches or bugs that are otherwise aggravating.

I would highly, highly, highly recommend SkyUI even for a first playthough. The stock UI is just garbage on PC.

Seconded.

Thirded.

Actually DPI's list is pretty solid. If at the very least you take advantage of SkyUI, the high res texture packs and the unofficial patches, you will be avoiding a lot of headaches WITHOUT changing the vanilla experience.

Ok, I will try a "vanilla" play through then worry about mods except this one.

For modded homes, personally I prefer Deus Mons, though you have to defeat a fairly high level dragon just to get the key... so maybe not right away. ;)
