Breaking Bad Sparks Global Piracy Craze

I download some stuff, but ever since Charter sent me an e-mail saying they got a notice from Take-Two that they took note of my IP address for downloading Bioshock 2, it makes me a little nervous.

I think everyone got hit with that notice about Bioshock 2 lol. I know I did back then....First an last letter so far though ;)

This is a total win for everybody. People see what they want to see when they want to see it. And then eventually, people pay for it. How many box set sales are due to pirating? No one pirates suckage. Unless it's Crysis 2.

I hated watching last night. I knew there would be more questions than answers at the end of it. The show is so good, I should wait for all the final episodes to conclude and watch them all at one time commercial free. It's killing me to get one of the best TV shows ever made piecemeal on AMC, which was thankfully put back on Dish.

The episode was a slow drama fest, though. We watched the latest Under the Dome right after that and, as expected, it was even worse.

Drama, drama, drama.

British TV is so much better, it actually deserves being pirated :D

No commercials.
Shotgun a series.
I watch what I want.
I pay.... for only what I want.

More people need to adopt the Netflix plan for delivering digital content or to strictly do a la carte.

I know that a lot of the industry relies on subscription packages. But at $60-200 for a 1 person house hold this is fuckin insanity.

Just like I enjoyed browsing the video store when they still existed, I also enjoy vegging out and letting the TV decide what I watch as I explore the airways. But not by paying to get anally probed.

Biggest factor for me here in australia is the format it is shown in. SD format on tv. I would rather download it it 720p with surround sound

sadly, sometimes it's easier to pirate than to use legit services that are encumbered by DRM and various technical restrictions.

Sometimes, it's also due to timezone differences.

where can I stream it ?
Where can I buy it?
Where can I watch it ?

Nowhere.. I must say, I pirate cause netflix have like nothing on their page in my country, same with hbo.. seriously, licencing per country is just plain stupid.
Watch music video on youtube, not avaiable in your country.
song on spotify or wimp, restricted cause they don't have a licence in my country.

why do people pirate people ask?
I pay for netflix, hbo and spotify, most games, there are some that does not have trial and I test and buy if i like it.
I got over 600 bought games so they shudn't complain much, I've bought every game I've liked!
I don't see a reason to buy a physical copy of a series or movie 3 years after release (when it comes here) since I have no way of playing a physical copy...
tv.. don't have, I cheer everytime I can watch something legally!

Yeah before Steam I M-I-G-H-T purchase one game a year. I would pirate games and had hundred of RELOADED titles on my HDD. Now I purchase more like one game a week and pirate 0 games per year.

Never thought about purchasing a season. But if It came out the same time as the TV version and I could purchase a season for $5 I might consider it. I'd still rather pay a subscription plan like Netflix for under $10/m and watch whatever I wanted.

As great as TV/Movies are. Games just hold a higher value. There are F-E-W movies that I would watch more than once. As with games I can put 50hrs into each title EASY.

I have netflix... and to be completely honest.. netflix fucking sucks. But not with how it works, it does quite well... its the ENTERTAINMENT industry who has turned netflix into a shitbox. I have no desire to watch some korean soap opera grade A shit... which is half of netflix.... the other half of netflix is stuff that is one grade higher than crap. The rest is pretty good stuff... house of cards... i burned through it in 3 days.. great series... but thats all they have and im done watching it.

They do not have a set standard for ALL studios or entertainment companies to filter there shit onto. Netflix.. Hulu, Drama Fever, ABC go... etc. etc. etc....

I REFUSE to pay 40 services to see what i want to see when i want to see it. Thats called paying for stuff i DONT WANT like CABLE or SATELLITE television. Ultimately that is probably a HUGE factor into why people pirate, and honestly, i would pay to see certain stuff for if i couldnt find it. But i dont have that problem when pirating. Dexter? yup... Ray Donovan? Yup...Breaking Bad? yup... 3 seperate services i would be required to pay to view 3 shows. With piracy, i dont have to pay anyone and i can watch it whenever i want without annoying 900 number commercials of some sluts acting sexy to further their modeling or actress career.

Are you listening entertainment industry? No... well you can ignore me telling you to go F yourself then just like i ignore you about how much money you are losing.

Maybe after years and years of not having fast timely access people have just gotten used to using torrents...Or maybe their download scripts just grabbed it automatically when it was posted. You snooze you lose, should've offered cheap same day downloads a decade ago.

That is soo true. The networks have forced ppl to build up a habit and a working infrastructure for pirating. Then this one shot arrives (have no idea of the quality). If you really believe that that is all it will take to stop pirating on a wide scale i have a nice plot of land with huge mineral and oil assets to sell to you.

It's going to take years of reliable service at a low cost with instant availability to get the big mass over.

just my 0.02€

P-S Im not a freetard and Steve your frequent ranting of piracy and the freetards is just makes you look uninformed and stupid

Man, piracy data is so misleading. Yeah, I "pirated" the show. You know why? Because when I tuned in at 9pm Pacific (like the advertisements said) I found that the HD version started a half hour early (8:30pm). It wasn't available on-demand of course, and the SD channel looks like shit, so I downloaded the episode in about 15 minutes. Not my problem.

I don't know how many people are like me but I have my PC auto download the shows I watch to rewatch later so I don't have to leave them on my DVR. I use my PC to play them back.

That makes me wonder... Is it really piracy if you're paying for the viewing rights via a cable subscription?

A few years ago when Breaking Bad first aired, I had a legitimate cable subsciption with Comcast, so I was able to watch the show regularly on AMC.

Not too long ago, both AMC and Comcast fed into their greedy habits and made AMC part of their 'Premium' channels along with ESPN, TNT, FX, etc. AKA we want more money from you.

So fuck yeah I downloaded a Breaking Bad episode. It's one of the very few things I use bittorrent for.

Amen. What are these legal options for someone who doesn't want a subscription service?

If they gave you legal per show options you would just bitch about it being too expensive and pirate it anyways. There is always a "justification" for stealing when it comes to piracy. For chrissake someone in this thread used the "timing difference" excuse so that people could avoid spoilers. I must be a unique specimen, because I've managed to avoid 4 1/2 seasons of Breaking Bad spoilers while waiting for them to drop on Netflix.

I've grown to believe that piracy is an addiction. Many shared traits between this and so many other addictions. Maybe I'll write a journal article, have one of my old professors I stay in contact with get it published and really get all your blood boiling :p

AMC is a premium channel now?

Its not a basic cable channel anymore. It's not premium like HBO, but at least for me you have to buy it as part of a package.

For me it got to the point where cable was no longer worth the cost considering 90% of what I was watching was available OTA with an antenna and AMC / Discovery were about the only channels I was watching beyond the channels I can get with an antenna. So I became a cord cutter as those 2 channels were not worth $65/mo for me.

The big problem with cable today is that it first started as a no or limited commercial break service since you paid for it. But, network executives and shareholders reared their greedy heads and now it's no different than watching OTA tv. Same with satellite radio...there's limited commercial breaks on many of the stations now. Sorry, I don't feel bad for cable networks at all when it comes to people obtaining commercial free shows over the internet. They did this to themselves.

Exactly; in the end it's about simple convenience.

This. It's fucking crazy. I'm waiting for Comedy Central to follow suit as well.

Spreading lies is spreading lies. It would take all of about 2 minutes to find out how an Amazon TV season pass works.

As for jojooverusedpatheticattemptathumornumber above, no, they didn't pay for their torrented version of the show. They paid for the version that was showed on AMC. They could have watched it and even recorded it for later, even repeated viewings. Your pathetic argument would make it seem like you're entitled to DVD/Blu-ray copies of any show that was every broadcast on cable while you had a cable subscription. Protip: You're not.

Agreed and quoted for truth. Leeching self entitled foolish pirates will keep bullshitting though!

Gee, I wonder if you've ever bought an Amazon season pass. If you had, you would know that they charge per episode. All a season pass does is provide a small discount and make the episode purchases automatic.

More lies.

This. They will always make up some garbage as to why they're in the right in their delusional minds. It's pathetic. These slime leeches take anything not nailed down.

That makes me wonder... Is it really piracy if you're paying for the viewing rights via a cable subscription?

Setting the "making available" case aside (which is how they've convicted people for piracy), it's still cutting into advertising income. They make a ton of money from on-air premier ads, not as much with repeats and on-demand (which is why those are delayed).

Still, it comes down to the same situation the music industry was in. If they keep trying to lock down content we'll keep shifting to easier ways of consuming it, legal or not. It's not really a money issue for most people, it's convenience. Once we're offered more value than torrents we shift back. Just look at Netflix/Hulu and Spotify -- the market is there. It's not our problem if they fail to deliver and lose $$$ because of it.

I'd probably pay $1 an episode. Assuming i can keep the episode, commercial free.

There will always be piracy, regardless of how good you make availability, affordability and how sternly you punish violators.

That being said, when something is easily available, convenient and affordable, piracy is reduced.

This whole "it was available in the entire world quickly" b.s. assumes that everyone has paid cable access. I don't know too many people who would be willing to add an entire cable package, just to watch the one show they are interested in. No show in the world is worth some $100 per month.

In order to minimize piracy, we need ALL shows regardless of channel to be available using the Spotify model, on one single service with a single low subscription fee, OR low cost a-la-carte show selection allowing instant downloads of shows for reasonable costs per episode (can't be more than at most a buck, but even that is high. 15 cents per episode is more like it.).

These need to be available the instant shows go live. Not an hour later, not 15 minutes later, not 15 seconds later.

They need to be convenient. No need to jump through hoops, or wait, or be forced to click through time consuming ads.

They also need to work. For whatever reason I still suspect my cable provider is intentionally sabotaging Netflix access. I can NEVER stream at HD. The max rates I get, can just barely keep up with the lower bitrate offerings. Back when I had FiOS it worked just fine, even though the advertised rates are about the same. So usually I day, "fuck it", I'm already paying for this show on Netflix, and go grab it from a torrent.

I don't condone piracy, but if I'm already paying for something and it's not working right, I go apeshit.

Too cheap to pay for what is essentially free already?

How is it already free? You pay a provider to get it on your T.V or computer with cable / satellite so no, it is not free at all.

but despite these legal options

Really, have you checked in those countries... they may not have it due to licensing issues, i cant stream jack from Amazon prime cause i am in Costa Rica.....

Give people a "world wide" option and i would get it.. but because of U.S laws and licensing with big greedy companies, i cant see jack and by the time it air's here it is a season or 2 behind sometimes.

I don't have a DVR
You're not missing much. You'll stockpile shows on the DVR and then it will fail and you quickly realize there isn't a way to recover the shows you paid for and you'll end up downloading them anyway.

Some people won't pay anything no matter what you do, but access to legal options reduces piracy rates. Access to legal options that aren't late, difficult to use, or overpriced reduces it even more.

(FYI, I don't consider $2.99 per ep at barely HD quality a good price)

Good, I'm not the only one who thinks this is a rip-off. Almost none of the supposedly HD streams/downloads are actually HD, the bitrate is waaaay too low. Even if the bitrate was higher the DRM makes their product much less valuable and not worth even close to $2.99.

$0.50 - $1.00 for full 1080p high bitrate with no DRM is what I would consider acceptable.

Twice as many people watched, 5.91 million, as the previous episode 2.78 million. Almost double their most watched episode.

My reason for downloading is I work when it air's on tv.

Also, I dont do ads. My time is valuable, more valuable than wasting my time watching ads.

To answer the potential question, would i pay for the convenience to watch a show at my lesiure, without ads?

Of course I would. If that option was available to an Australian.
