Tomb Raider reboot will make PC gamers "very, very happy"

Great game. Turn off tesselation and tressfx. The first causes crashes and the second just bogs down the game. Otherwise fantastic visuals and gameplay. A+ title that really needs more publicity. Really flows along smoothly.

Must be a YMMV sort of thing as I have no issues with it. At least not yet. Rig is in my signature and I play on high everything. I get low to mid 20s FPS.

How can you even play in the low 20 fps, that is choppy as hell to most people.

No it's not. I don't even notice unless it drops below 20fps, then it stutters a little. Otherwise, it plays perfectly fine to me. No worse than consoles.

I played on my buddies Eyefinity setup running 50+ FPS and other than having a lot wider view, didn't seem any different to me.

Low to mid 20s fps is barely playable imo. That is a total chug fest. Upper 20s is my cut off point for for a playable experience, and that is still slow.

And the fix for this has been stated dozens and dozens of times.

It's a single player game... having the fastest frames doesn't really mean much. It's not like I need lighting reflexes to out smart the AI that I'm up against.

When I play competitively, I aim to have a frame rate at least double my refresh rate.

You guys saying it's unplayable are doing something wrong. It's very playable. Only during times when it dips into the low 10s does the game appear to be struggling to keep up.

I can't fucking believe that these problems STILL exist. I thought they had fixed the tessellation thing but no, I've been playing this game more (never did finish it) and it still crashes.

It's arguably a negligible eye candy difference we're talking about by all rights the bulk of issues anyone ever had with this game from day one comes down to simply shutting those two options off.

After that, it's gold. Overall it just isn't that big a deal IMHO.

nope, im running with tesselation on and everything maxed out, only with exclusive fullscreen and tressfx off, zero crashes this time ;)

Wow...20fps. That would drive me nuts. I get annoyed when I drop into the 40's or (worse) have to play a console shooter that is locked at 30fps.
Still, I definitely know that it's a preference or "you don't know any better" kind of situation. The first revision of GLQuake ran at 640x480 around 24fps and I thought it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen.

Seen, being the key word here. These days, I expect 40+ framerates on all games when I build a rig. ;)

Unless it's, y'know, drivers or something.

just reached the summit forest, doing 100% as i go.. man, what a great game, this is great entertainment! i have plenty of other hobbies but this is great man, im having so much fun alone in front of the pc playing this thing! crazy huh? heh, im all fucking happy. zero crashes this time, i guess they patched a few things, it looks sooo much better with everything on!

With my setup I play on everything on max with 4xAA, tess, tressFX. I get 40-60fps always. Those two graphics options aren't broken, just hard on the cards

I'm with you, but probably more extreme. I get irritated when I don't get 60fps all of the time. I'd drop details, AA, shadows, etc. or whatever it takes to get my framerate into the upper 50's.

In the case of Tomb Raider, TressFX was a pretty easy thing to disable. I don't feel it looks any better, and it's a performance killer. There are still some performance hits in real gameplay, but nothing too extreme.

Fair enough, but I guess my point is that the tessellation crashing thing especially is a pretty serious issue that they never fixed (and probably never will).

meh, look who it is again... yo maverick, it works for everybody else but you, cool huh? im at the beach now, doing 100% as i go, ZERO CRASH, fucking tessellation ON and everything else maxed out (except the fucking hair). 320.18 on win8 pro.

seriously, i should just ignore..

Yeah, you should, your posts replying to me are fucking annoying and do nothing to improve the situation.

Good for you that it works fine, it doesn't for me and apparently others.

There are still issues.

Tact

yeah but is apparently fixed, im not running a "magic" pc or some shit like that, first run when the game was out i had to run with tessellation off and had a few crashes, now im running again, with the game patched, with tesselation on, and everything is fine, im about to finish the game and i had 0 issues bro so the problem is at your end.

well some people are running special versions that aren't being updated if you know what I mean ;) ... never had a problem with tesselation, but then again I waited till it was patched to even bother with this.

with everything turned up high and tressfx off (since this is obviously an amd gimmick), I am pinned at 60 fps cap all the time. you can see my old shit specs too, I have no god rig either. the game would not even be playable below 30 fps, since the success of those quicktime events depend on your framerate.

I'm not using a pirated copy, if that is what you're implying. It still crashes with tessellation and it is not a driver issue.

Mine crashed too. Turned off tess and tress and no more crashes. Why argue the point? Yours works, ours doesn't. Not a deal breaker as the game still looks and runs great.

the game must have made some big improvements on the nvidia side though.. i started it back up in order to finish, stopped halfway cause i had other stuff going on.

runs almost twice as good now on my 670 @ 1440p

I can't even use tess... my 670s are working hard @ 5760x1080 with it off... but the game still looks amazing.. I don't think it's crashed on me ever yet... /me knocks on wood

finished, nooooooo! my god what a great game, jesus fuck! i guess you can measure how great a game is when you do the second run, this is "the game", i had so much fun!

heyyy!! i just remembered one thing! i guess its time to revisit far cry 3! i only played once! its been half a year maybe its great on the second run too! :D :D :D

No rush though, personally, I thought it was shit once you figure out how little there is to do and how vapid the game world is. Tomb Raider was excellent however.

yeah i was seeing on the nexus some shit to unlock all weapons for sell from the start and while browsing at the pics i decided to give it more time.. is still too vivid on my memories lol, better give it a year.

just finished.. what an awesome game. second half is definitely more entertaining.

Just finished it.

Some minor issues on the GTX 670 where the screen gets this funny black twirl for a second or so in some rare instances, not sure if it's one of those Nvidia issues with the game.

Rating this to the nearest 0.25 -> 8.0/10. Most of my opinions of the game are summarized on Errant Signal anyway.

When you guys play a game such as this, do you go and try to get all of the secrets?

I mean it seems like the game would be really short if I just proceeded and stopped looking for GPS caches, crates, journal pages, etc. This stuff really seems to break the momentum for me and sort of makes me lose focus on the story.

Not really complaining but half of this stuff would never be littered all over a jungle or island. Also, I feel kind of mean when I am supposed to be rescuing somebody but instead I am leaving them hanging while I try to find a bunch of GPS caches. It makes me/Lara seem a little selfish.

I finish the main campaign, then return to get all the hidden secrets. Gives a replay value.

I snagged this on a steam sale for like $12 with the DLC, and OMG - this game is awesome. Better than Far Cry 3 I think as the story is MUCH better and atmosphere is freaking awesome.

Snag it if you get the chance, you will not regret it.

this game rocked so much... I delayed finishing it because I liked it so much... I'm going back to find all the missed items now. :)

It is a lot of fun - for what it was going for on the steam sale I was like ARGH why didn't I wait lol.

yeah, but all of these go on sale at some point.. I couldn't have waited.

for anyone who hasn't bought it by now at this price it's a no brainer.. just BUY IT :)

Absolutely. One of the best games of the year so far for me.

With the secrets - I'd suggest avoiding them if you want any replay value. I got literally everything in my first pass and I don't have much or really any motivation to play it again soon.
While all of the additional items would break the game, I wish there were some kind of New Game+ option. For games with lots of power-ups and upgrades, that tends to make me want to keep going (a la Resident Evil 4 and Dark Souls).
