EQNext" will be the world's largest sandbox-style MMO ever made"

Loved the lore in eq, the sleeper was some of my favorite, the phara dar's, dragon slayers, veeshan's command to the warders to put him in a sleep and caging vox/nagafen for the crimes.

Good times.

Oh the slaying was funny, the scripted event only lasted a few hours and their first attempt he poofed with 5% left. Sony re wrote the script to last longer.

Taking a long time != challenging

If you're talking about the Sleeper kill, it's both. He did massive damage, had regen through the roof, DT'd, massive AE's, stripped buffs and generally fucked things up. Sony actually designed him in a way they thought he would never be killed. In fact, the first time he was woken, they banned the guild responsible because they thought exploits were in play. They reinstated them later on, but the drama was huge. GM's were heavy handed in those days. I later joined the guild that first woke him, and they were still telling stories about it for years.

I had much fun raiding with BotS.

Couldn't agree more. The original EQ wasn't playing on rails. I still vividly remember stepping out of Halas for the very first time and getting pwned by "an ice goblin scout" in Beta3 and thinking to myself; well, looks like I need to make a bunch of friends in here.

Over the EQ1 was the best time of my life in gaming, in no small part because there was no set path for players to take and because you couldn't just solo all of PvE.

The "hero on a rail" and solo everything up to raid content makes today's MMOs suck.

Playing on rails ... that just put words to a feeling that I have spent years trying to describe...

Yes, I don't like that trend in newer games so much. It feels a bit like being on a Disney world children's ride where the train goes through some doors labeled "haunted forest ... scary" and a bunch of cardboard cartoon monsters start popping up.

I don't think I've ever had blood pumping fear from a game as much as with a Jedi in permadeath SWG days getting a TEF flag. That's what you get for venturing off on your own in to the wilderness! You get your ass eaten/shot/hunted. You were still totally free to do it, though ... just know it's gonna hurt.

They were using the bridge exploit, at the time you didn't lose LOS when under a bridge but the AoE wouldn't hit you either you. A guild on our server got banned for attempting this on the Warders, so the next week our guild woke the sleeper.

Yea, "exploits". Either that or bad design. I'm nostalgic for that era, but glad EQ evolved past that kind of buggy content with ban happy GMs.

The other thing about it was the size of some of the mobs. Like the first time you ran into a giant and only stood as high as his shoe. I don't think I recall ever seeing their faces, just their shoes. And accidentally attacking a vendor when you hit the A key..lol good times...

I remember that. My friend used to hit A when I was playing randomly. It was an awful way to die. :(

They "evolved" alright, now it's buggy content and no GMs at all.

It's crazy that guild is still active after all these years

That's one of the best things about EQ. It bred loyalty and camaraderie better than any other game I've played before or afterwards. There simply was no other way to get anything done for a LONG time other than serious cooperation between a lot of people. That rapidly decreased as the power level ramped up of course, but it's one of the things I really liked about it; you HAD to work together and it wasn't just a few people.

Been reading the articles on tentonhammer about this. Can't wait for August 2nd. I wanna see what they have got so far.

I played EQ for nearly 6 years straight with only a few short breaks. No other MMO has ever kept my interest for even 6 months straight. It wasn't until I had a kid that I couldn't devote the time needed to play EQ properly. The community truely was the best there was, I remember significant details about every guild I was in and even memorable raids that took place 10 years ago. I can't even remember the name of the guild I last played in WoW and that was only a few months ago.

As someone else said, I really liked the combat pace of EQ better. EQ2 was always a button slamming fest that I absolutely hated. The original EQ I could actually play four characters at the same time and do pretty well due to the way things worked. There hasn't been good CC or pulling in any MMO since and that is sorely missed.

I disagree to an extent. Wow did CC much better up until wrath IMO. There was more of it and you where not forced to wait for a specific class if you needed it. Sure a good bard or chanter was one hell of a thing to behold and the difference between success and failure but waiting for a good bard or chanter sucked.

Pulling is something i am glad is gone. Sitting in a static spot and killing for hours was the absolute worst aspect of EQ bar none.

We tried to never sit though, we always roamed. Camping a spot was awful I agree, we just didn't do it unless we were raid pulling or key pulling or something and even then we'd roam spots unless a place was completely over-run by other groups. Those other groups rarely pulled hard though.

The not having access to good CC would probably sour someone in EQ though, I get that. But I totally disagree that it was better in WoW. It was unbelievably boring in WoW. Granted, I played bard in EQ so never really had to worry about "finding CC" or a puller.

The only reason people sat in one spot pulling mobs because nothing was instanced back then and people fought for "camps". It had very little to do with CC or pulling mechanics.

I had a high level Monk alt, which they made very fun later on. I kept my groups moving and doing interesting things. Never let your group sit idle for more than a few seconds.

Smed won't leak anything but some concept art and a 3-D modeling render at least they know how to run a tight ship. People on the MMORPG forum are going nuts about speculation of big shoulder pads and stuff it's funny as puck.

Things I'm hearing are lack of end-game, huge focus on a Minecraft type player content (which is what they mean by sandbox), and major focus on house decorator type stuff

It really depends what the situation is. If it was something as mudane (camping for haste sash in LGUK or fungi tunic in Sebilis. Then yeah, i agree with you. Prior to instnces which was introduced via LDON (sp) you really did not have a choice to go elsewhere once you secured a spot. Since you were in most cases competing with other groups for named mobs in the same dungeon. Then again in raids, utilizing mez to cc adds is not an option one would consider

If John Smedley is running anything or is "in charge" you can bet they haven't learned squat.

Unfortunately you are most likely correct

I didn't see your post earlier, athough that was definitely one of the major factors on why groups camped one spot.

On a sidenote, i wish there was something like color flux (aoe stun) in today's mmorpg's classes that cc

I played a Monk, Enchanter, Cleric, yadda yadda so I've had seen it both ways. While it can be considered more fun to keep moving, it really puts strains on classes that need to med. I'm not a big fan of fast regeneration because I think it takes away the strategic piece that you get when mana is a resource you have to manage. So back in the days with limited regeneration, always moving was almost impossible because you had to keep meding.

Sustaining CH and maybe a few splash heals while sitting on a horse as a cleric wasn't too difficult. People could med when everyone needed to pee or get a fresh beer :p

I played a magician in EQ and I remember some of the most fun in groups being when we had some of our top tier raid geared guildmates and I got to pull as the mage for the AOE group. My god the XP flowed like a river. Down in the zone with all the fungus - I think it was the deep or something (Luclin expansion). we would pull almost half of the zone in one pull and nuke the bejesus out of it all. 2 chanters stunning 2 wizards blasting and me pulling/nuking and Furor or Behemoth doing that bugged out melee AOE with that rediculously slow but massive damage hammer. We would get an AA in about 2 pulls, wait for respawn and repeat. I pulled because I had that earring from Vex that cast spellshield and it stacked with a 300hp rune pearl I had or something. Just ran right through the middle aggroed them all and ran back. Was so fun.

Then before all that when I was leveling up in the Overthere - I pulled because I was JT the crazy mage and I was pulling before the first one died. My theory was you should never ever sit down grind grind grind - get that xp fast. There were people who quit my groups because I would not slow down lol. I meant to wipe that zone clean.

Then they had that bug in Howling Stones (still my favorite zone ever) where if you hunted there long enough it overflowed the counter and reset to max positive faction. So I could as a High Elf visit the Overthere DE outpost. I even got that special quest hammer that proc'd the overthere spell to teleport you to the overthere outpost. I turned a few heads when I would use that to exit the raid and random people would be in the DE outpost and wonder what a High Elf was doing there not being attacked lol.

Of course. It's a sandbox MMO, not another tired iteration on the Raid or Die model.

You sound like Jaytee the high elf mage from FOH. If you are, what up dude. Uael the necro from Cestus Dei here.

Lots of old EQ players here it seems.

  • Faendryl Sylvanwolf

  • Umii Faen`dryl
  • I was in Talisman on Tunare and Township Rebellion on Luclin

Gwerlum Baconfingers, Brotherhood of the Spider, The Rathe. Retired.

Name is really familiar. Were you a Zerker by chance? Or a warrior? Damn I'm getting old. Too much booze and late nights among other things. Can't remember much of anything any more.

Edit: I was Wystler btw. Bard on the Rathe for a while.

Wow, hey Wyst! Yes, Berserker. We raided for a couple years in Halcyon.

Hah, small freaking internet sometimes. Hope you're well man. I knew that name was someone I used to sing for. Beast of a zerk if I remember correctly. Miss the old days often.

Fennin Ro here, had the first Iskar on the server(Though I deleted him after a short while).

My main was a warrior named ...Stiler, was in the Midnight Sun guild.

I played a Bard and a Monk on E. Marr for a long time. Couldn't tell you the names I used anymore. Good times.
