Should I get an Ouya for emulation, or a SNES supercart. They are roughly the same price.

Please discuss.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH

Nope too small and OHYEAH!

OUYA SuperGNES = The Shit!

This thing is awesome, I hope they refine the shit out of it.

As you can see I can consolidate the fuck down on all of my stuff. That and my new TV doesn't have composite inputs for my old gear anyway. So I emu'd them up.

Stuff I'd like to see the OUYA team address. Here's what I've got so far.
  • Add Plex, Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime Instant (well, by add I mean get them on board)
  • Improve controller Bluetooth (might be faulty hardware on this one, weak signal it seems, or I just have a bad unit)
  • Improve caching/loading speeds in "Discover"
  • Make app/game images selectable for larger view
  • Fix USB storage (hopefully by launch), 8GB just doesn't cut it. I'm also sad that they now have a 16GB model, I would have ordered that instead. I digress.
  • A built in file manager would be nice, though I could live with 3rd party (i'd like to keep my device non-rooted forever)
  • List purchase history in "Account"
  • Remove "MAKE" from the main screen (i.e. make it an option you need to enable somewhere instead)
  • Remove "Sandbox" from "Discover" (i.e. make it an option you need to enable somewhere instead). Lots of that stuff is broken, does not need to be up front. Should need to be enabled by users who know what they're looking for.

Also, this game is awesome:

lol, and Ice Rage isn't half bad for a simple "trip a bitch" hockey game. We got plenty of laughs out of it. :)

I've spent a whopping $7~ bucks on apps/games so far. lol

Edit: I see the ouya does support 4 controllers. Awesome.

Now has anyone tried 4 controllers with any N64 titles like Mariokart?

This little box has some awesome potential for emulation

I've done 2 so far, however I'm waiting for my other OUYA controllers. I'm using my PS3 controllers right now. Which works fairly well, however I'm thinking with the native controller it might be easier. Though the PS3 controller works fine once paired.

It's going to let me catch up on my old library, as well as have fun games with friends over. Just jump in and play. We did some Mario Kart 64 last night. We were all wtf... Just start the game and play, you're playing a local multi-player game in about 10 seconds from the time you start the game. I miss that, it was lost on all the newer stuff that takes several minutes to load shit. :(

The OUYA controllers are OK except for the D-pad which is AWFUL and severely hampers the ability to play most games, particularly emulated ones. The biggest issue is that UP almost always registers as RIGHT, so going up ladders/vines becomes very difficult I have 2 controllers and this happens on both.

If you can use Ps3 controllers, i'm sold.

Is there still input lag from the controller to the box? I remember reading about input lag, which really would put a damper on the fun-ness

Yes, I've got two of mine paired.

No, and if I remember correctly this was game specific, not the OUYA itself. There's no more lag on this console vs. any other console wireless analog controllers from what I've seen. Granted just use the PS3 controllers and be happy anyway. Technically speaking we should be able to use PS4 controllers as well, which happen to have a touchpad, which I'm excited about. Because I'm sure that'll be a much better build quality than the OUYA and still give me the damn pad. :)

Sweet! This thing goes retail in a few days, I'll have to pick it up after. Really lookin forward to throwing it in a bag and bringing it out to a friends/hotel/wherever. Portability with this device is great!

How does the D-pad compare to the Xbox/Xbox 360 controllers? Worse?

I've only used an XBOX 360 controller once so I can't really compare. Maybe someone else can chime in.

I usually use the analog stick instead on the OUYA controller, the d-pad has hard edges on it so it wears at your thumb faster.

My PS3 controllers luckily don't have that problem though. So I have the option of being less annoyed. lol :)

Can you download Android apps to it? Like, could I download the Netflix app and use that?

Very cool. I will get on then. I'm excited to play through some of my old PS1 & N64 games. I'd just hook up the consoles, but none of my displays have the rca ins.

Same problem here, no composite in on any of my newer TV's. If I'm going to waste money on a box, it might as well be an OUYA that can do more cool shit and take up very little space.

It's not perfect, I actually posted up some thoughts here. I'm also still positive and happy overall. I still believe!

Looks like yes:

I've been using the USB cable to transfer files. It connects to your laptop or desktop just like a phone. I have a HTPC, so I just leave a cable there, drag and drop files as needed.

Should be the same for apk's :)

Has anyone used the Twitch.tv app on a Ouya? If it runs well and is decent I would pretty much be sold. I know Twitch made the iOS app useless so I would want to see some user reviews of the Android version.

I've read the n64 emulator runs bad. Truth?

False, we've been playing the shit out of Mario Kart 64. It did have an issue with South Park though, it was glitching with double textures and shit. All of my other games work fine, I haven't played with any of the settings to make South Park work, because I don't have real strong feelings for it one way or the other.

Looking at your pictures/videos; it will upscale to 1080 most of time?

Yeah, it uses the native OUYA screen res. So if it's on a 1080p screen, you get 1080p, on a 720p screen, you get 720p and so on.

I haven't used it yet, however I've seen several YouTube videos showing it works fine.

The twitch app is just as useless on android. Unless they have changed it recently. I stream myself, so that's part of why I'm interested in it. Have to get a Hauppauge or capture card for your computer (?).

I'll play with it later today, I don't know the extent of its functionality either.

I had to stop streaming because my ISP sucks a fat cock and wont fix it. Every time I do heavy upstream, my connection resets after like 20-30 minutes. Pissed me off many times while tearing it up on BF3 and losing my shit. I digress...

On a related note, I've got a PCI-E capture card in my PC as well as an external hdmi+component capture to USB 2.0 card. So it was never a concern for me on the OUYA.

For my ouya a few hours ago. Sadly I think it's going back to amazon. The ouya controller is a joke, and the ps3 controller isn't much better.

I really just wanted it to emulate, but the gnes emulator is a disaster. I don't think most of the people using it have played a real snes in a long time. It's not very responsive with either controller seems to have problems running the roms. I think I'd rather have a supercart.

Controller is not the best, software bugs still need to be worked out. SuperGNES works fine for me, along with all of the other emu's.

The smarter devs included PS3/360 controller support. More are catching on every day. The wireless 360 controllers work if you have the USB PC dongle, original or generic one works fine. So does the USB 360 controller. I prefer the 360 controllers the best, just because it's hard to compete against those as the "standard."

Mario all stars

Mario 3

Kanooki suite on level 1-1.

When you get to the flashing blocks, you should be able to annihilate those. You cannot on the ouya, it's too slow.

I dumped the Ouya ROM for CM10. Much better experience in my opinion. I like to actually be able to access things without being tethered or forced to use a barebones browser.

As for the emulators, there's a thread on XDA that discusses which ones work and which ones have issues.

My brother got one, and to be honest, I really wasn't that impressed.

Of course, he didn't actually play it when I visited him. He has really shitty internet with tiny download caps. I'm not sure what made him buy it.

Mine went back to google, the whole thing felt laggy no matter what emu or game and it's very rough around the edges software wise.

I know, but it's funny to imagine.

It's running a modified android OS... so it's not that far out of the realm.

For anybody that is interested, i fired up A Link to the Past tonight and it's a night and day difference. The SNES emulation on the Ouya is a complete joke. Guess i'll buy a supercart and be much happier. Luckily it only cost me about 5 bucks shipping to test out the Ouya.

After testing one with all the different emulators... i pity you. It's not even close to accurate of an SNES, i can't even imagine anything else.

I see a lot of people running emu's on this. A 30 dollar used Dreamcast has done this for a long time. Or a modded original Xbox also real cheap. I don't see this even becoming very popular. 99 bucks better spent elsewhere. If I wanna game on a Tegra 3 I'll use my nexus 7 and I can take that with me even have a Bluetooth controller for It i got on clearance for 5 bucks specifically for the Tegra 3.

The EMU's are crap IMO. They are so unresponsive.

I tried the ouya controller, which is a huge piece, PS3 and Xbox360 controllers and i couldn't get rid of the lag. It's like the processor isn't fast enough. You can't go into a spastic rage of swords in Zelda or a tailspin in the Tanooki suite.. it just doesn't work. The game can't process the button inputs. Switch over to the real console and the difference is night and day. It's starting to get expensive buying one-off rare SNES games so I was really praying the Ouya would be great. Sadly, it isn't.

I think for a lot of people just "collecting" and having the ROMs while being able to play them in any fashion is the fun. I also felt the Ouya emulation quality was crap, especially the control responsiveness and the audio quality.

I think the responsiveness issue is just the console, most of the Ouya native games feel sluggish too.

Totally agree.
