The [H] Post Pictures of your ManCave

My Man Cave / Garage / Patio

I Call it KilrGarage ;)

Most everything for the cooking area and LCD trolley are from materials headed for the scrap heap. The 47" LCD was the first LCD I purchased about 8 years ago and needed a cool place to be hanging out. I have a insulated locking door I made from Diamond Plate aluminum for the exterior wall that is not shown. The Jenn-Air electric cook top I paid $75 for used and the Jenn-Air grill is Natural Gas that I picked up from a scrap pile and re-conditioned (crazy, the thing is all stainless steel and heavy as hell. I just had to clean the burners out and re-build the ignition). The neat light fixture I got from an old hotel lobby. I put 2 1.5watt LED's in it and use it for a night light. I didn't really keep track of my time and other materials like hardware and electrical fixtures and wiring that went into this project.

Thanks! Its a blast having people over now that its warm and you can be inside or outside.

Anyone here in NW Iowa? Stop over ;)

Bad ass cave. I've always wanted to incorporate diamonds plate. What is your favorite meal to cook up in Kilrgarage?

Oddly enough, its omelets for breakfast.

I like having my entire family over sunday morning for breakfast. Usually about 8-12 people. Ill have 2 skillets going for omelets, bacon and sausage on the other side of the electric grill and a huge cast iron griddle on the gas grill for hash browns!

That is what I am cooking in the picture where I am giving the thumbs up.

That makes me wish my house had a basement. :(

My house has a basement and that still makes me jealous lol. Mines unfinished i just need to plan out what I want to do and make it happen. One day I shall have a glorious man cave such as that one.

thanks guys. i'm really enjoying the space. we lucked out and found a house that had a finished walk-out style basement in our price range. both up and downstairs are 1500 sq ft each. i'll post some more photos soon.

we need to move the fuck out of CA so we can buy a big ol house with a big ol basement "cave" so I can go to town on it...

edit: KillrB - wow! now that's a place you can do some serious work. on just about anything. :)

So what do you do on your 30th birthday... You re-organize your setup for the last time.

This setup is the most compromised setup in regards to speaker cable runs so I will be making some of my own DIY cables using Audioquest FLX 14/4 wire paired down to 11 gauge for each binding post. Still unsure what IC's I will be going with, Douglas Connection or Kimber Kable PB&J's. Either way the longest IC run is actually from the Harman Kardon Citation 11 pre-amp to my Sunfire TGP-II and I will be going with Blue Jeans Cable LC-1's or the Audioquest Sidewinders on sale (14 footers).

Here is the gear actually connected:

Sources:
Denon 3910 via RCA
Computer via Meridian Explorer (3.5mm to dual RCA)
TT via Harman Kardon Citation 11

Pre-amp: Sunfire TGP-II

Amp: NAD 2600 (on loan from IndyHawg)
Fisher 460t tube amp (in need of repair)
Carver M1.0t (in need of repair and going in the main HT when working)

Speakers: Polk RTA 11TL's (stock) with Meniscus Audio spikes

Headphones (not pictured): Beyerdynamic DT-770 32 ohms
Secondary headphone amp (not pictured) Audio GD NFB-5

Speaker Wires: Partially Oxidized Monoprice
Speaker IC's: Radio Shack till replaced

I will get better pics when I get some time, these were just shot quick so I can get to bed..

You know this cant possibly be true. You are [H] so you will only be happy with this setup for a certain amount of time. It will then be torn down, rearranged, upgraded and rewired. :D

yep, we'll all see you on your 31st with a new setup, right? :D

LOL well until we are in a house this is it. I am [H] nut its time to stop chasing gear and to sit back and enjoy the music> In order to do better I need to spend waaay too much.

My main HT will see some upgrades but my mancave is done sans some better interconnects.

P.S. nothing better than holding your baby in your arms in while she falls asleep to music with you.

P.P.S. its hard to type with one hand :D

Ahh this explains everything. Well done! :D

Although if a smokin deal comes up somewhere or on CL I am sure we will see an upgrade! Where's pics of the theater?

Perhaps.... I do have my "walking around money" for such things, though I am focusing on getting my cabling needs met in my 2 setups (need to get better quality HDMI cables in my HT, and all RCA cables for my 2 channel setup)

Where's pics of the theater?

My mancave - still a work in progress but I am very happy with the results so far

Next on the list is run the cables through the ceiling and paint the ceiling and projector screen walls to reduce some of the glare - but I have a feeling this is one of those rooms that will never be completely done - it is more of a fun room than a theater room.

Equipment:
Sony HW50ES Projector
Carada 118 Brilliant White Screen
Sony DBP-S5100 BD Player
Salamander Designs Cabinet
Onkyo TX-NR1007
Emotiva XPA-3 Amp
PS3 Slim
XBox 360 Slim
Wii U
Mac Mini (stream movies from server)

7.1 Surround Sound
B&W 683
B&W HT61 Center
B&W 685 surrounds
Dual stacked SVS P12-NSD subwoofers

LoveSac in the corner (now my dog's bed) and power adjustable theater seats!
Ping pong table next to my movie and game collections.

It's always a work in progress but that is what makes it fun. That is some nice equipment and a great layout. Any plans for a bar down there?

The projector is resting on the mini bar, it has a sink and holds my liquor. There isn't a fridge in the basement so I may put one in the utility room but as far as a full bar goes, I don't think I would ever use it. Thanks for the kind words!

there is still a small amount of work to do, like determining how to mount the center channel. it's just sitting on a cheap walmart TV stand at the moment.

8728270512_eefeab6bb1_b.jpg

I am no pro but should you not have your rear speakers more behind you vs pointing right down? Or not real option to put them back further as they would be mounted to high up cause of the ceiling.

Still sexa as heck!

Bear in mind that 5.1 specifies the surround and not the surround back channels. 7.1 meanwhile has both surround and surround back channels.

It depends on your school of thought, but most recommendations have the surround speakers more to the sides of the listening position rather than behind you. But generally it is easier to place the surround channels behind rather than to the sides, hence the prevalence of "rear" speakers in 5.1 setups in the home.

Figured since I moved stuff around I would post here. My mancave is also my 2 channel stereo setup, and I focus more on that in their than video or my computer. Dont know how old my last showing of my office setup was, but there is a LOT of new gear there now.

My wife was out with her friends on Friday leaving me home with our 6 month old baby Skye. I had just gotten in some cables from DouglasConnection to demo, specifically the 9 gauge cables and 2 sets of speaker wire jumpers. I also have 2 sets of interconnects coming in so I can have a full setup of their cables. I will be reviewing these cables over the course of a couple weeks and putting them against my Kimber Kable Hero IC's and Kimber 8VS internally bi-wired speaker cables in my downstairs setup.

To start with though I decided this was the best time to just sit and really re-organize my setup in the office as I was using just cheap Monoprice speaker wire. I had a entertainment center with 2 shelves I wasn't really utilizing right and a equipment rack that I just couldn't seem to find a way to incorporate right with the rest of my gear. So I went to work and from the hours of 10:30 - 1 got everything moved around. I managed to bring all my gear out and have it in the room, even if its not plugged in.

I also managed to re-work things so that I can actually get a decent set of speaker cables in there and not need a 15 foot cable for one speaker and a 6 foot for another one. This means for this setup once these demo cables move along to the next guy to I can hopefully re-use some of the Audioquest FLX 14/4 speaker wire I have already instead of the horrible Monoprice stuff I had been using.

So here is my setup now as it stands. I think this will be where I leave things for at least 6 months. Its the most optimized setup for me. All units are as close together as possible allowing for the shortest runs of interconnects and speaker cables which means less cost and easier to keep cables run properly. I still want a power-conditioner like a Panamax unit to go underneath my Parasound amplifier, but for now everything's through a power-strip. I also hope to upgrade all the power cables as well. I am looking at Cullen Cable, Douglas Connection, Audioquest or Kimber. I will wait till I get my conditioner though.

Here is the rig as it stands:

Daily Drivers:

Sources:
  • CD/SACD/DVD-A Player: Denon 3910
  • Laserdisc Player: Pioneer LD-S1
  • FLAC: Custom Computer
  • Turntable: Technics SL-B3
  • Phono-pre: Harman Kardon Citation Eleven
Pre-amp:
  • Sunfire TGA-II
Amp:
  • Parasound HCA-700ii
Cables:

  • Denon 3910: 1m Audioquest G-Snakes
  • Laserdisc: Rat Shack - (looking to upgrade)
  • Computer: Black Cat Digital Cable - THANKS PHIL!
  • Turntable: stock
  • Harman Kardon Citation Eleven: 4m Audioquest Sidewinder - thanks to whoever pointed out this deal on the forum

Now you may ask.... what happened to that pretty equipment rack you had Dan..... Well here is your answer, it became my SHOW PIECE/VINTAGE GEAR RACK!!!. This is where I keep my vintage looking pieces, both in use (Turntable, HK) and those units not in rotation right now for whatever reason. It lets me keep them out to show off even when not in use. It needs some more gear in it though, hopefully a nice Marantz integrated, and some good Kenwood and Onkyo pieces too....

Here is what is currently in each shelf from Top to Bottom:

Units
  • Technics SL-B3
  • Harman Kardon Citation Eleven Pre-amp - this unit is actually being utilized for my turntable above it. I can use the EQ switches on the face of the unit (which I like) and its pre-outs to go to the Sunfire
  • Fisher 460t tube amp - needs to be looked at, once fully functional it will sit on top my Parasound to switch between the two for those long demo days
  • Carver M1.0t
  • Yamaha R-300 - my dads original unit that I hope to get refurbed and working to give back to him as a gift. I also hope to replace the cheap case (vinyl on pressboard) with a nice custom wood made case
  • Pioneer Laserdisc CLD-D504
