PS4: $399, no online authentication, no used game restrictions...(Post E3 discussion)

The people who wanted backwards compatibility bought the units with backwards compatibility, no one bought them for Linux, and if they did they can still use it, then no one has bought a PS4 for it's free online play later to find out when they loaded it up there was a fee. There was no "bait and switch" however much you try and sensationalize.

Just as a FYI Sony did disable the Linux feature in a OS update I remember that from when I had a PS3 long as you didnt update your system you could still install Linux just to clarify that statement.

People are trying to get Sony to comment on this idea over on Reddit and I think its a great idea that could really seal it:

That would be really cool.

I don't know how big of a deal this will be either way though. Gaikai will not be ready till sometime in 2014 from what I read. I just wonder if by the time they get it up if people will really care with the exception of people who switched to the ps4 and want to play some of the ps3 games for the first time.

That backwards compatibility solution would be very neat. I have a TON of PS3 games that I don't want to toss out...

You get it.

all i know issss if the bruins dont win today i will poop in my ps4's disc tray

Gross.

They will.

Solution: don't buy either console until they work out the bugs and we find out their true intentions with it. :D

Now where's the fun in that?

You know I can't wait for even a second when I order stuff, I always pick next day air or something.

Final Fantasy XV looks amazing. That and the way Sony is going about things makes me more excited than I was for the next generation.

Doesn't it? It really popped at the conference, the music was incredibly good as well.

It really made it feel like you were in the final fantasy world. The way they depict the world through the cutscenes, we'll actually get to experience that now with gameplay.

For sure, they've made some 'meh' games, but I'd hate to see them go away...it'd really make me sad, no doubt.

We doing that Montreal server for FF 14?

the fuck if ima play on a canadian server :O

LOL, are you for real dude?

M$ approached the publishers with this DRM bullshit and created this mess while Sony did the EXACT OPPOSITE.

Sony are doing EXACTLY what they're doing with the PS3, it's up to the publishers if they want to be assholes and use the online pass thing EA did which was proved to not be worthwhile even for them profit wise. They didn't build their freaking OS around DRM like M$.

None of you people know who did what, where. Don't make shit up. Do you work for MS, EA, are you an exec that is now disclosing information that surely would have been under NDA and now we should find out who you are and get you fired?

Nothing in your article has any quote from a MS or SONY exec stating what he claimed happened.

I'm lost, forgive me, aren't we talking about how they stated that DRM would be left up to publisher? Trying to follow a few threads here, sorry.

You're either being intentionally obtuse or your iq isn't capable of following a logical argument. Either way you're just trolling now and it is getting old.

If you mean the conversations about DRM, I think a lot of people are just making assumptions.

there are no assumptions its already been clarified.

DRM for ps4 works the same way as it did with the ps3. if the publisher wants to require an online pass in order to play then they are allowed to do so. otherwise there are no restrictions.

I'm sorry, I should have been clearer to what I mean. I mean, it's been clarified how DRM works. What people are making assumptions about is the decision making process that lead to the DRM decision.

First time in my life that the console I'm looking forward to is from Sony. I never imagined they'd be so receptive to consumer demands, given their reputation for telling their customers to go fuck themselves.

But goddamn...respect for ownership of games, no built-in DRM, a reasonable price...provided there's no always-on camera required to be hooked up to the bastard, I'm gettin' it.

I just don't get the always on camera thing. I had a Kinect hooked up to my 360 and it was always fucking around just watching Netflix or playing a game. I practically through it out the window. That being said, I just preordered my PS4 so there's that.

Anyone know why Kaz wasn't at E3 and announced the price personally?

Your cable box runs through the Xbox for the added "experience" stuff. This means your Xbox has to be on to watch TV. Instead of using an Xbox controller to turn the system on, you can say "Xbox on". The camera is not always on, but the mic is listening for the keywords.

So I know the Xbox One sucks and is Hitler and all, but as for the Kinect and privacy issues...can't you just put a piece of tape over the camera/microphone?

I never noticed that. Kinect always goes to sleep after like 15 minutes, doesn't it?

Technically yes, but they could be asshats (which at the current trend is totally possible) and make it that Kinect must first see and/or hear someone before it will allow operation as well.

Considering it has to be connected at all times for the system to even work, it isn't that crazy to think it would do something like that. Especially since we don't know that if say Kinect breaks in some fashion if the console will even work even with the broken Kinect plugged in still.

I would like to say none of the above would happen, but after what we have witnessed from MS, do you not think it is possible? lol

You could do that yes. Or, you can just turn it off in the settings like Microsoft suggested. :p

I wouldn't be surprised if it requires someone to be in-frame. If they won't allow people to unplug it then hard to imagine they'll allow people to just turn it around or tape over it. Remember their longterm plan is collecting engagement metrics to sell to advertisers under a "customer experience improvement program". Google the kinect patents theyve filed in the last 1-2 years and look through them, this isn't conspiracy shit.

But the bigger issue is Microsoft's rigid new arrogance, that really kicked into high gear with Metro on Windows 8 when MS decided "yes you will" believing they would turn every PC into an iPad and people spending money in their appstore where they get a 30% cut of every sale. Ofcourse the public has revolted, we'll see if the same happens with the XBONE - whole lot of halo kids out there that don't know better and will still buy it in droves.

Many people see Microsoft's "our way or the highway", consumer-hostile attitude continuing with the mandatory camera/microphone as a real problem. I certainly won't continue supporting a company like that and I had THREE XBOX360's at one point while my PS3 collected dust and I ultimately sold it.

PS4 Doesn't Allow Online Passes Even From Third-Party Publishers
We've already come right out and said we're not going to allow online pass. And the word "allow" is key there. Specifically with online, with PS+ requiring a charge to play online, we would not want any publisher [to charge.]

In general, we're all businesses. Sony or Microsoft is never going to be able to tell EA or Activision exactly what they can do. What we like to say at PlayStation is that we set the precedent. The way we are approaching this is that we want this to be extremely consumer-friendly, extremely retailer-friendly, and extremely publisher-friendly. My personal opinion is that it's hard for me to believe that any major publisher is going to put an extra set of used DRM onto game titles because that wouldn't put them in a good spot, right?

Sony's Scott Rohde

You know, the irony is this is Sony, freaking Sony, being heralded the champion of the consumer. Has hell frozen over?

I fully expect Microsoft to pull a dick move after dick move every chance they get, because you know, its Microsoft. It's in their DNA. And frankly, Sony's too. I just assumed Sony would be as anti used game, DRM friendly as Microsoft is in this new generation. Kudos to them for bucking that expectation.

What servers? Console MP is P2P or dedicated servers bought and paid for by developers or third parties. Charging for MP is just creating a money tree. So sad that consumers are willingly supporting being taken advantage of.

say what? Multiplayer has not largely been P2P in a long time. Take live for a example, they run the servers that people connect to enable one to play with their friends. Something has to control the game and a single console isn't it....
