Hi all

The other day my napp-it/OI box went down and couldn't come back up. It was because snapshots had filled the disk so it was in an unusable state.

I fixed it by adding -s to grub (not sure if this even did anything), zfs list -t snapshot, and then deleting old snapshots using zfs destroy rpool/ROOT/snapshotname

I only allocated a 12gb VHD on ESXI when creating this, and by deleting the snapshots that were using 600mb and 400mb I have cleared 1GB, but how can I prevent this going forwards?

There seems to be 10GB of OS for some reason as well, this seems a lot for a basic napp-it install. Any ideas?

I would use 15 GB minimum for rpool or you may get in trouble on any updates
 
I believe the snapshots are occuring automatically, through napp-it.

Should I disable this or change the lifetime of snapshots?

Can you expand the VHD?

Rpool snaps are no regular data snaps. These are bootable boot environments.
They are not done automatically but on updates. Every OS, napp-it and most application update creates them.

OS + napp-it + webserver + bonnie + filebench + smartmontools + mc + nc....
You can delete them manually after update, but sometimes you are very happy about them.
 
Thanks for the explanation Gea, OI has been rock solid for absolutely ages until this and has saved my data on more than 1 occasion.

What would be the way out of this trap then? Can I increase the size of the VHD dynamically or will OI throw a fit? I understand the snapshots can be imported at some point, so I am reluctant to remove them in that sense.
