Bill Gates, with a $72.7 billion fortune, has once again retaken the crown of "the person everyone is most jealous of." ;)

Gates, 57, was more than $550 million ahead of Carlos Slim, who has a $72.1 billion net worth. The co-founder of Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) has seen his fortune climb about $10 billion this year. The software maker’s shares hit a five-year high today, and have advanced 28 percent year-to-date.

And the people behind that recently found 35+ Trillion dollar hidden bank accounts dwarfs Gates' $73 Billion fortune.

Guy can't seem to give the money away fast enough to keep up with his earnings... this is a problem I would like to have.

Hmmm, he's obviously not giving away enough... His charity work is not much more than tax breaks and bonuses.
 
I would use that money for scientific pursuits. Build the largest heretofore space telescope; send people to Mars; etc.
 
The interest alone on a lousy 0.75% CD...shesh....(not that you'd do such a foolish investment...)

You people are hiliarous. I always wonder how people can't understand that in third world countries with very high infant mortality rates and lack of birth control, women will have 4-6+ children (or till they die from childbirth) in order to make sure at least '1' child survives to take care of them in (relatively) old age (~40 in a third world country). If vacinees, a woman would know her child has a very GOOD chance of living to adulthood to take care of her so she'd be able to limit herself to 2 children thus reducing the worlds population as '2-4+' children were never born.

Choosing not to have a child is not akin to TERMINATION AND MURDER IN LARGE CAPS OMG OMG OMG OMG THRU MERCURY BC TO MANY PPL ON EARTH LOLOL SAYS SORCS N MAGICIANS. I'm not sure why people jump to that conclusion of any Bill Gates related comments from a youtube video without much explanation.
 
I don't like what he did to the Memphis, TN school system ( can't fail anyone under grade 4 for any reason ) but he's done pretty good and he's been pretty even handed with giving back. So I'm glad that even with all that giving, he's still making out like a bandit.

I wonder what'll happen if him and Buffet pass away at the same time and his charity inherits around $140 billion. They'll almost be the richest charity on the planet.. darn Catholic Church :p

Indeed. Bill has literally setup a full time job to give away his vast fortune to better mankind. Steve Job's horded it to build a horrifying French made Yacht.

These people are still incredibly greedy though. If they care that much about humanity why not do more NOW instead of 20-80 years until they die? Bill could EASILY donate 60 billion dollars RIGHT NOW and STILL be absolutely filthy rich never needing anything for the rest of his life.

You do realize that he doesn't actually have 60 billion in cash? He is rich in msft stock, not cash money like the Arab sheikhs.

The $58B is 20% of MSFT market cap. He couldn't sell it right now if he tried without decimating a large amount of shareholder value. Paper wealth..

Need to know who butters your bread and don't piss them off.

Reminds me of the movie "Brewster's Million's" with Richard Pryor , he kept trying to find a way to give away all his money as fast as humanly possible to (Spoilers .. and deal with it) so he could gain access to his real massive fortune.

The whole movie shows at least to some degree , when you have an absurd amount of money (like Gates) even spending it is a FULL FUCKING TIME job. Surprisingly (not) billions of dollars take time to spend and when you are making 10's of billions each year hand over fist its impossible to spend it all.

Gates took the time to actually develop a charity where he knows its being FAIRLY split among the causes he feels are most dire.

There is a huge amount of fraud in charity organizations across the world and once the check is written and cashed many of them DO NOT disclose how it was spent.

Wouldn't you want to make sure your massive amount of donated money wasn't split up and funneled through thousands of "fake" charitable organizations and used for possibly even malicious purposes (inadvertently funding terrorism for instance).

So all you nay sayers can just back off of Gates's nuts and give him the respect he deserves for basically retiring and devoting his life now to helping mankind in real and decent ways. Because mankind is in deep shit and needs it.

Yeah, Gates wasn't much of a technologist or product guy, but that's what copying other companies products and brutal business tactics was for. At least he's doing immeasurable good with his wealth, best philanthropist ever.

Your easily pleased. It's a shame that there are not many ultra rich people helping worthy causes, but obviously Bill only gives out token amounts, compared to his income, and net worth.

Percentage wise bill has given a lot more then I have. Its bills money, its none of our business what he does with it. In fact, why are we even bashing someone that actually contributes versus the 99% of us that dont??

He got to be the richest somehow. Wouldn't it be better he control it, use it wisely to promote programs like he already does, gain interest, and increase the size of it so that when he does donate, the greatest sum of good has been done?
