Hey guys,

Ok so I'm pretty pissed. Shipped my working PS3 to amazon for trade in credit and they didn't accept it. Come to find out it came back to me broken...

Not sure what happened but something is deff up with it now. Was 100% working when I sent it, but now nothing.

symptoms:

No signal to tv. I tried resetting the video setting by waiting for the second beep. Nothing. Tried two tvs (that it previously worked on) and three HDMI cables.

No YLOD.

When I first turned it on I got nothing to the screen. So I reset it by holding down the button until it beeped twice. Got the normal screen and selected HDMI. Booted fine. Went to grab a game to try and diagnosis why they sent it back and when I walked back up the screen was frozen with artifacts. Restarted it and now im getting nothing.

Anyone have a clue?

have you tried a safe mode reset? with the power off, press and hold power button until a third beep, it will power off. press and hold power again, on the third beep it will double beep. you will now be in safe mode. might have to try restore file system or rebuild database.

hope this helps. not sure what else this could be.

Did you try connecting it with the composite cable? My friend had the exact same problem when he moved into his new house, I had him hook up via composite and all was good from there.

Nothing here either.

Even tried swapping the HDDs

I have a "broken" 20GB Ps3 from eBay that will output to a monitor using HDMI -> DVI cable but otherwise outputs no video (HDMI, component, composite). Not sure why, I assume it's something with the video chipset or HDCP. Tried different cables, no luck. Works fine with the HDMI -> DVI though. Have not tried baking it but I think I'll do that one of these days.

I bought another "broken" 20GB from the same seller (this goes back several years, a bunch of us here bought them), worked fine after the reset described above. Kept the initial one though (for spare HW in case the BD-ROM went out or anything) and just stuck it in the closet.

No clue it it's for all models, but I had an issue with my launch BC PS3 not outputting video via HDMI. The guy on the phone at Sony told me they had a few issues with the HDMI output not handshaking correctly and actually burning itself out by trying to handshake incorrectly. They ended up replacing mine with a brand new one as a replacement.

Have you tried hooking it up with composite cables and launching into safe mode? It's worth a shot. Look for youtube videos of people doing it. The written instructions can be confusing.

THIS

had a slim that would not handshake properly returned it and the new one did. I am sure the video implimentation is broken in more ways than just the scaler....

Did you insure it for shipping? Sounds to me like it was handled poorly by the courier.

I used Amazon's shipping. So I'm waiting to here back from them if UPS insured the item. To my knowledge UPS insures every item for up to $500 free of charge.

I bought this PS3 at launch in 06. Think they would still cover it?

Thanks for the tip. I have a HDMI->DVI cable laying around. I'll try to hook it up to my monitor and see what happens.

Thanks for you guys help. Really PO'ed with Amazon right now. Hopefully once they reply I'll have good news.

Amazon's reply basically told me im SOL....

They did give me a little store credit and apologized by saying it was out of their control...

Guess its going to eBay AS-IS broken.

Another option is to trade it in for a PS3 slim refurb through Sony for $100.

Might fetch more than a dead ps3 but requires more time.

I had a similar issue with mine. I know you said you swapped hdds. The firmware for the ps3 is stored on both the NAND and the hdd. If either one is corrupted you get no signal, not even in safe mode. I swapped out the hdd for my old 60 gig original hdd and thankfully it worked. However, I took the 500 gig I had in it and formatted it to reinstall and got the same issue. The ps3 just would no longer accept that drive. I ordered a new drive, slapped it in and boom, working ps3 again. However, it very well could be an hdmi or video card issue. Just thought I'd share my experience.
