Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

I kinda touched on this before, but my only real beef with the game (and it's kinda a big one) is that it feels and plays exactly like Far Cry 3. Which is understandable, but...I was bored with Far Cry 3 halfway through Far Cry 3. :p

where the fuck is my goddamn save? I played for about 45 minutes earlier and when i hit continue and just starts the fucking game over even though there were checkpoints. I have a huge backlog because I dont have a lot of time to play games so I will be damned if I should have to repeat all the shit I already played through again. how hard is to make a decent game save system that works?

The save system is quite unorthodox... Though it is a small gripe with this fantastic game.

There was a uplay issue with saves. Don't know if it was resolved. Run Uplay in offline mode in the meantime.

Yes the save system sucks, lost about 10 minutes of gameplay because of it, so annoying but I finished the game anyway. It was really entertaining with the humour and unrealistic futuristic weapons and such and I enjoyed Blood Dragon more than Far Cry 3. Nice to see a FPS that isn't copying COD and has its own identity.

This game actually makes me want to get more into main Far Cry 3 now.

I actually am doing the OCD thing with this. I've done everything. Found everything. Unlocked everything. This concept like this (setting, character, weapons, etc.) just really "took" for me.

Yeah, I don't know what it is about games having bad saving options. Bioshock Infinite was a pain as well.

Courtesy of SA, I found this and am now going back through reclaiming the garrisons with all the upgrades.

You guys are complaining about save system when you can save the game manually from main menu?...

It doesn't always work how one might expect. Sure, I was able to save as I wasn't in the middle of a mission, but when I loaded that save, it put me back on the opposite side of the map, as I hadn't been to any nearby garrisons lately.

Practically 8 hours of total game time with 100 percent completion across the boards. At $15. Excellent.

Sounds fun, was it really difficult to get to 100% or more time-consuming?

I have this issue and it has become common in games as of late. I am really baffled at the awkward choice; if I want to save and resume I want to resume in the same condition. Not with more health, in a different location, with a different set of weapon readiness ect.

I ended up finishing the game. The AI bugs are not too problematic as you only have to rely on them in the first 2 or so missions. I never experienced the weapon switching bugs again. There are still a few outposts to liberate, but it is not as thrilling to do so compared to FC3 (IMO) as there is little reason and little ability to go for a stealthy approach so it gets a bit repetitive. Overall it is nice and not bad for the price.

do you think we are stupid? its not saving at the checkpoints and it wont even allow you to save in the menu during a mission.

Not really, especially if you buy the maps from the vending machines instead of just running around looking for them. I found 90% of mine just running around looking for blood dragons to kill after I beat the game, but when I actually took the time to look at what the vending machine had, I kicked myself for making things harder than I needed to, but I never felt a need to buy anything other than weapon upgrades from the machines.

Running low on ammo for a certain gun? Take downs and arrows until I'd got enough, or switch out the weapon for something else.

Health? Bah. Squeeze the hand coil or break out the acetylene torch.

I think the game might not have gone as quickly if I didn't get sucked into missions accidentally. There were times I didn't want to continue story mode stuff, but got too close the border and it kicked off a story mission (running around and not realizing where i was in relation to a map marker, for example)

I just wish they had an option to make the game scale up with difficulty. A 1999 mode a la Bioshock Infinite, perhaps. It's certainly fun running around again after resetting the areas with the fully upgraded weaponry and skill set, but it didn't take long in the game before it was not a matter of "am I ready to take on this garrison full of soldiers", but rather "capture the garrison real quick so I can get a hostage mission that actually presents a challenge for me".

So apparently this game sold an order of magnitude more than what Ubishit had predicted. Michael Bein has been approached for a sequel.

It was a good day.

That's great news.

This totally overachieved across the boards. It remains to be seen but it may gain enough of a "cult status" and be more popular than the main game.

To this game's credit, it actually made me want to get back into the main game which I intend to do some time later today.

Nah. I just enjoyed what I was doing and OCD'd. ;)

Biehn had some great lines in this thing. There's a certain level where there's a blatant, broad salute to Aliens and he even says: "Isn't there something real familiar about all this?" Just classic.

"Have a cookie" "Happy num num" "I hope I don't have to fetch any fucking feathers." Or flags.

If they do a sequel I hope they don't mess it up by trying too hard or getting bogged down by "media pressure"... I'm betting part of why this little game rocked was that it all made very "behind the scenes"... more games should be made this way, the devs and consumers are typically better off, it seems...

of course, with the right attitude anything is possible...

Game is fun, but you have to like the 80s, or you won't understand nostalgia :) and I'm surprised to see such fun game from likes of Ubi. And then there is the great pun of making AC3 in lands of pirates.

Imagine EA or Activision doing such thing as Blood Dragon. Oh wait, Activision done that and called it Mists of Pandaria :)

All I ask of the sequel is a battlefield-like multiplayer. That would destroy my life: I'd never leave my desk.

So I went back to the main Far Cry 3 game and I found myself missing this fairly quickly. I'm trying to figure out why I had more fun with this and got into it more than FC3 main.

Probably because the 80s glam and humor is a nice sugar-coating over the bland FC3 base gameplay? :p

That was certainly fun but I really just felt like even the gameplay and some other things "felt" alittle better in this and I just had more fun with it to the point I did a 100 percent OCD job on it whereas I can fire up FC3 main and after about half an hour or so I'm ready to go do something else.

*shrugs* Go figure.

Maybe it'll teach these big publishers that we don't need rehashed AAA titles. A quality unique $20 title will sale a metric shitton. Furthermore, by not requiring FC3, they open up a lot more gamers to it. They also get a lot of people hooked and now will probably see a rise in FC3 sales. So it's a win/win scenario.

Smart play.

The next one will be $59, my guess. ;)

They needed to allow more versatility in how we did things. My biggest letdown was when I realized you don't have sticky-C4, so you can't send a jeep into an outpost as a bomb. Tar + C4 + Brick = fun.

All commercial videogames are developed behind the scenes.........

I'm progressing slowly through the main story, only because I really enjoy just wandering around and picking fights with cassowaries. I never played FarCry3 (outside of benchmarking for customers) so I must be getting the most value out of this game. I still need to find two more animal types to kill in order to get my shotty upgrade.

Is it just me, or does the bow have zero opportunities for upgrade? I'm rather disappointed, compared to the upgrades given to most/all the other weapons? Then again, maybe I'm missing something or there's some sort of super bow that shoots lasers and makes "keytar" sounds or something that is revealed later in the game.

I received a key through AMD's Never Settle Reloaded. I'm quite pleased that it's a stand-alone game since I don't own FC3 (yet). Glad to see that people are loving it. I look forward to playing it soon. :)

The Keytar bow is a sacred weapon of the ancients, only to be wielded by the most heroic of mulleted shark-wrestlers.

the fazon with laser ammo and the sniper thing with explosive is non stop fun.

Though the shotgun thing is also way over powered. I was blowing through places with it as well.

Explosive ammo + cars is just pure fun.

been hearing a lot of great things about this game. went ahead and bought it off a member in the FS section. expecting my video card to arrive in the mail tomorrow. can't wait to play it.

end level was quite fun. that ninja star thing, first thing that came to mind was Krull and that ending song during the credits..

Overall, as a huge 80s fan, it sure hit the spot.

I think I'm going to play this next. I've played at least an hour in (past the damn tutorial) and it's hilarious.

Blood Dragon sees the future of the US.

One thing I've noticed about this game is that the color scheme burns my eyes... which reminds me of gaming in the '80s.

 FC3 is the gold standard for gameplay as far as I'm concerned. What didn't you like? The game was essentially a giant playground!

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I found it to be extremely repetitive later in the game. Just because you can roam freely doesn't automatically make the game interesting. Not saying it was a bad game, but it's certainly not my GOTY or anything.

That's fine with me, I was just curious as to what you found lacking. I finally finished Crysis 3. I started it several times, but couldn't help but shake the feeling that the core gameplay was flawed in some way. It wasn't until I revisited FC3 that I saw all the things that it did right that Crysis 3 got wrong. I personally found the gameplay to be really satisfying. The mix of RPG and FPS elements seemed spot on, and it was fun to be able to take the outposts in all sorts of creative ways.

Sure, on your first time through, you are kind of penalized for not going the stealth route. That was sort of a bummer because you have so many toys to use. That said, there are so many takedown options that it's hardly a big deal.

Sorry, but the gold standard for open world games is still S.T.A.L.K.E.R :SoC. Even the Fallout games do a better job of holding a player's interest, especially with the enormous number of user mods available.

Not to necro (this *is* the most recent FC3:BD thread), but damn I just saw "Kung Fury"!!! Talk about bringing the humor all together. (It's on netflix if you got it.)

Big fan of Kung Fury, and an even bigger fan of Blood Dragon. Why Ubisoft hasn't made a full-budget sequel is just one more testament to their ineptitude.
