Aliens; Colonial Marines a Sci/Fi L4D ?

I updated and now the game doesn't run at all. Crashes instantly on launch. Tried re-downloading literally the entire set of game files, same thing. Running 314.21 drivers...anyone else try it after the patch?

running fine for me, 314.21 as well...did you adjust any graphics settings in NV control panel that could be causing it to crash?

Gearbox took one step backwards with this film grain BS which is nothing more than a distortion effect to cover up A:CM's hideous textures and lighting. Xenos seem to be more lethal though, at least they got something right in a 4GB patch

If they make this game somewhat decent now with patches and is on sale for $5-$10 then I might get it.... lol

Then that reinforces the "one trick pony" concept all the more for them.

Their BIA games were decent/good imo.

If you like WWII game sthe BIA series is about the best/closest to a more story-baesd WWII game out there, 3 games that all follow the same unit a la Band of Borthers style.

Borderlands is ok, but it rides a lot of that based on it's art style and loot factor. Just like the diablo games.

I reinstalled. Slightly less bad looking shitty game I've no interest in playing through again.

Not to my knowledge. Not sure what is going on. I'll mess with it more tonight.

Well the Bug Hunt DLC is what the base game should have been all along. Unfortunately it isn't worth the $$$ to get into it unless you own the base game (and still the season pass is a better option). Even so, good luck finding other people playing at this stage.

Wish it was stand alone or free (for owners of the base game), because it would restore some faith back in GBX from the people that aren't ever going to play it.

Got it working...must have been something in my config files that was screwed up. Deleted them and it worked fine.

Not a fan of the film grain effect AT ALL. I think there are some mods to get rid of it, though, so that's good. AI seems a little better, graphics seem a little better, though there are still a lot of low-res textures that need to be taken care of. FXAA seems to be broken now, as others have said on the GBX forums.

Overall, a step in the right direction but they need to keep delivering patches like this faster than once a month if they want the game to stay afloat (barely is now as it is).

Still can't get over the fact that the asking price for Bug Hunt is $15, if Gearbox wanted to do those right that preordered A:CM they could atlest discount it to some extent.
Also, the 4GB patch.... I call BS since the DLC coincidentally was released on the same day that Steam pushed the patch. Buying the DLC probably does nothing more
than decrypts and unlocks the Bug Hunt data in the patch itself

Yeah, $15 is insane. I haven't tried Bug Hunt yet but I got the Season Pass (pre-ordered, stupid, oh well) for $20 on GMG, so that price seems even more insane.

And the patch was only like ~1.5 GB of new data, but I guess some of the larger files had to be re-downloaded or something. The game used to be ~6 GB and now it's around 8.4 GB or something like that.

They have improved on the AI and the graphics. A lot of the visuals that were in the E3 demo are some what put back in. The crack when the body hits the top of the transport tube finally happens. The explosions look more fierce when the dropship explodes from the grenade but I think still needs more smoke. Noticed quite a few lighting improvements as well. Is it up to par on the E3 demo? No but close. They are doing what they can to salvage this game. Sadly for most, too late at this point.

indeed...too late...most people have moved on and have no interest in revisiting this train wreck...even if they somehow manage to improve the game, most people feel that Gearbox lied and butchered a sci-fi classic...no amount of good will now will change the fact that Gearbox's reputation has been ruined...will not support them after reading about their shady business practices

The main problem now is that, despite this patch, they still have not fixed ANYTHING with regards to the MP, which is what would keep this game afloat. Apparently none of the graphical fixes in SP actually carry over to MP, which is just confusing and wrong.

They need to get dedicated servers or, at the very least, host migration in the game ASAP.

Disable nVidia aa modes in cp.

It wasn't that, thanks though. I hadn't set anything in the nVidia control panel for A:CM. I ended up fixing it by deleting the config files and letting them regenerate, as I said a bit earlier.

Didn't bother trying MP after the patch, but I'm not surprised they haven't gotten to it yet. It was little frustrating that MP is the only reviewers praise but they mostly forget to mention they praised it for being functional. I've played it. It's not what I'd call "fun".

Yeah, I played like, two matches and said fuck it. It wasn't awful, but it felt imbalanced and the third-person Xeno control felt shitty to me.

I think they could fix a lot of it with patches, but it's going to have to be a few more major ones like this recent patch. At least it feels like they are trying to work on it, despite never getting any sort of apology or acknowledgement that they failed on release. Even now, they gave zero details as to what the patch would include until like, two days before it was released. Would have been nice if, right after launch, they said, "Hey guys, we understand the game wasn't what you expected, and we are working on making it right. Here's a list of issues we are working on patching..." It's not like they didn't know they were working on a massive patch prior to two days before it released.

I hate myself for feeling encouraged about this. I'll have some time to play games Saturday night. If they've improved the graphics and AI so that the xenos at least feel threatening then the game might just be worth picking back up.

I'm still trying to figure out how to get rid of the film grain. Completely ruins the game IMO. I tried using a mod and it doesn't work for some reason.

At least he finally fucking acknowledged A:CM...No apology though, lol.

I guess we just have to see what happens. A little annoying that all they did was address what they already patched and then talked about DLC. No roadmap or upcoming fixes or anything.

You'll never get an apology out out Pitchford, because by doing so it admits failure. In his eyes Gearbox is doing the community a favor by supporting the game prior to release,
granted the game-play and the visuals do look a little better it's still not up to spec for AAA tile with a $50 price tag.

Gearbox is essentially in damage-control mode at this point. I've lost complete respect for them as a developer and I would imagine their industry reputation has taken quite a hit.
Continuing to push $15 DLC is not a wise move on their part, the MP scene is pretty much dead as it is right now.

I don't own this game but I know that gear box had released a update on PC with many fixes and a texture pack. Can anyone comment on what it improved and any comparison screenshots.

Naw its still crap. You're better off not playing at all. I'm a massive aliens fan. As in I play alien films in the background while I'm working and It was painful to trudge through even with the fixes I just got about 5 minutes into after the fixes and couldn't bring myself to go any further. If you just want to play the MP Natural selection 2 is a pretty good replacement.

Oh I'm not buying it till its 10 bucks at least did the same thing with AVP. Just was wondering if it looked any better.

It does look better. It's no "E3 2011 100% gameplay demo" but it's definitely an improvement. The AI is slightly better as well.

I haven't really played it much (MP was total shit IMO from what I played) but I'll revisit it time and again to see if they made any major changes down the line.

The game is better with the additional tweaks and they should have a way to get rid of the film grain next week (should have been a toggle in the first place). Good to hear they are listening to the feedback and actually trying to fix things (unlike some developers). I've heard nothing but praises for the bug hunt DLC that I would love to try out but I'm sure there is going to be a sale on the dlc and game pretty soon. When that happens, I'll get the DLC to check it out.

For those who are curious to give the game a try with the new update, wait for the game to be on sale. It's fun but not worth full price. This coming from a hardcore Alien fan.

I tried the Bug Hunt mode a bit by myself. AI has really not improved that much IMO...they still jump down more or less right in front of you, stare at you for a second, then slowly run forward. They almost never crawl around or try to dodge your shots, and frankly they should be WAY faster and use pounce WAY more often. I was playing by myself on Hardened and it was not hard at all.

New update, added toggle for the film grain. Can finally turn it off.

I don't know why I'm still playing this game. The multiplayer community is still going surprisingly. I have a lot of fun playing the Bug Hunt mode with friends.

Odd because last time I tried to find a Bug Hunt match on the PC, nothing was found (then again, I don't know anyone else who got this game...lol).

Kinda gave up on the game entirely, but we'll see what the DLC ends up being. They desperately need dedicated servers and/or host migration to keep the MP community from dying completely.

TDM is definitely where everyone is. Meet some new friends on there and been helping each other get achievements. Just ignore the single player campaign. It was nuked from orbit.

Necro? Anyway I'm finishing up Rebellions AVP this week. I finished the Marine campaign over the weekend and I'm finishing the Alien campaign tonight. Even having finished only 60 percent of the game I just wanna say -

Rebellion, I am so sorry. Compared to the giant pile of shit ACM is, AVP is just glorious. The Marine campaign alone was a million times better. It still looks great. the story was pretty good. The gameplay was fun. Everything fit together really well. I even cared about Tequila which Gearbox obviously albeit poorly ripped off of and ruined.

Having sat down and compared the two I'm hard pressed to even call ACM an actual game. It wouldn't rank a bargain bin movie tie in even if the graphics were improved.
