There’s a rule in life immortalized by a fellow named Murphy that simply states the harder you try to improve something, the better your chances are to screw it up. Electronic Arts just got that message with the 2.0 upgrade to SimCity by introducing new bugs while fixing a few old ones. EA will be issuing new bug fixes in the near future: Rinse and repeat. :D

No official dates for the fixes have been given but players are asked to continue to give feedback and to revisit the thread for an update at a later date.

Paid beta. Scary new trend toward developers asking for $60 at the beginning of a dev cycle rather than at the end.

Maxis-EA is literally creating this game as they go along.

True, but EA took it to a whole other level with this. Hell, even Amazon stopped selling it at one point.... I mean, just how bad do you have to screw something up where a major retailer just says no. (They are selling it again, but with 2K+ 1 star reviews.....who's gonna buy it?)

Domo, I wouldn't even call what their 2,0 patch did a "fix". It was a whitewash job to cover over glaring AI programming failures. A true fix would have addressed the massive underlying issues in their engine.

Do they still have the employees to fix SimCity? Most major studios remove the development staff once a game is completed. Also, a ton of people just got laid off at EA.

Blame people who do preorders and pay for "beta" programs that last 2 weeks and give excuses that the game "isn't finished yet." If it is 2 weeks till release, the game is finished. Real beta programs take many months, maybe a year. What makes it doubly bad is that they don't even label the betas as being a beta. This SimCity game is a beta, and may remain that way forever.

Exactly. The idea of a "beta" for a couple of weeks before launch is laughable. More like a final test run/marketing gimmick. Proper QA cycles can last months, and certainly aren't done with public betas unless it's periodic betas to test specific features in settings involving more players(some developers actually do this).

To call a patch that was intended to fix game breaking problems that existed at launch and weeks afterward a "2.0" is laughable. That's ignoring the mile long list of problems that the patch either failed to resolve or introduced as new issues. Balance, performance issues, that kinda stuff is understandable to require patches after launch. Even some crash bugs found after launch could be considered acceptable(as long as they're dealt with very quickly). The problem is that EA-Maxis released a broken and unplayable game.

Fix the buggy game that was patched with more patches. I really wanted to play the game but am glad that I didn't purchase at launch. With the way things have progressed I probably never will unless EA gets their act together and fixes what should have needed fixing to begin with at launch.

they should seriously turn all the source and code over to a public repository - and make the game open source/free. Once it's fixed (by people that actually CARE about the game) they might be allowed to release some cool add on shit for a few bucks.

But of course that makes too much sense and EA will never do such a thing.

Eliminate the origin requirement.
Make the max city size at least triple.
Put in some actual Sim city code.
the whole need to connect to other cities bullshit optional.

Then and only then is that massive pile of shit worthy of the Sim City name. Until that happens EA can piss off.

But then how can they sell you their shitty 1 building DLC that costs $15?

Software has bugs. What else is new.

Every software will have large number of bugs and broken mechanics during development, and it gets reduced significantly before being release as stable version. Sure there will still be bugs, but the major ones should be ironed out during testing stage.

Sim City looked like it was rushed out before it was ready, and even the attempt to complete it was rushed out before it was ready. It is a never ending cycle :p

It was designed to milk the shit out of people's pocket and also designed to release as few features as possible so people would be forced to buy more additions.

Well the name SimCity - because of the built of goodwill and gamer memory for the previous titles - is what sold a lot of those preorders. Thats down the toilet now, they cashed out of that brand and title recognition. I think a whole lot of people learned their lesson with this new high bar in preorder burn.

EA has been voted the worst company 2 years in a row. Every forum you go to people are bashing EA. You preordered an EA game.

It's not a lot of money however, they continue to abuse gamers with these business practices. Don't help them with their bullshit. Don't feel bad. Most of us have been swindled by EA or some other company. EA just happens to be the worst of them. Just learn from this.

Remember the name EA(Electronic Arts) and stop preordering video games.

Do yourself a favor. Do it for your fellow gamers. It's easy.;)

I think EA will continue to work on it. They want server populations to be high when they start selling DLC. That's the only reason they will continue to fix it.

Just like they kept fixing SWTOR? Yea right.

DLC for this game will only constitute extra buildings or content that used to ship with the game. They don't need to actually fix the extremely broken AI to do that. In fact, they've already shown they don't intend to with the last "patch" that was simply whitewash.

Example: Instead of fixing the fundamentally broken RCI demand....they just added a conditional where all-residential zone cities would fail.

If you bought an EA game, you knew what you were getting into.

actually the vast majority of the worlds computer users don't reside on hard forums or do a ton of reading on developers before buying a game...people like myself say ah new sim city cool the last one was great ...

that said those who bought it will probably second guess more purchases from them, after that cluster f*k

Can't say that I won't ever buy an EA game ever again, but for sure I will NEVER pre-order anything even if it is called Battlefield 4 or for that matter buy any EA game on release day, knowing that in a couple of weeks it'll be shitty enough to be discounted.

This game is a prime example of why you should never pre order anything sold digitally.

New trend? Been living in a cave somewhere the past 7 years?

Well it kinda is new, I don't think there has been any other game that has been at this scale of epic disaster.

Diablo 3 was bad but that game wasn't technically broken.

Worst game release I've ever seen. I was an avid Madden player, and picked up Tiger usually every other year. I won't be buying either title, or anything else from EA, ever again.

I guess I'll grab the new MLB: The Show just b/c it's not EA.

IMO you should never pre-order anything PERIOD.

Every major reviewer is in someone's pocket IMO, so I like to wait and see actual gameplay on youtube and read on the forums first.

It's called 2.0 because they don't intend to make very many patches. EA's patch cycles seem to be using only numbers on the left of the decimal point and only go up to about 5.0, give or take. Also they usually only spend a few months patching a game after it's released, and then stop until after the first expansion. Their plan is probably to leave some of the current bugs in game until the expansion comes out so that you feel forced to buy it.

I'm so happy I got a refund on this game.

Funny thing is, EA stated they studied the Diablo 3 launch so they wouldn't make the same mistakes.

Pre-orders allow company's like EA to release turds like SC5 and Blizzard with D3. Once they have your money they've won.

Software has bugs. What else is new.

Bugs sure but many of the games that have come out in the last decade or so were basically in Beta when they were released with the developers relying on web updates to fix the outstanding issues later.

Maybe if they add features and actually let you build a city instead of a few blocks of one. Right now, SimCity 4 has more to offer.
Ew, no thanks. I have both, would not play SC4, do enjoy SC5. Worth $20-30, not $60 though.

I am sorry I do not understand this. Why would anyone not like SC4 and like SC5. SC4 is a true Sim City that actually works with many different regions and choices for players. SC5 is not only broken, and that is giving it too much credit, it's not even Sim City. It's a stripped down POS.

Now I bypassed Sim City 4 on release because it was released by EA. I was avoiding them back in 2003. I avoided it because it was EA and the Rush Hour expansion pack should have been part of the original release.

My last EA purchase was NBA 99 or 2000. I bought it and it would launch to a screen full of static like an old analog TV used to do when there was no signal. The patch was already on the website and I bought the game the day of release. This told me they knew it was broken and decided it was better to ship it broken than to fix it.

So somewhere around 13+ years since I have purchased an EA game.

Same reason that although I'm a big Civilization fan, I can't bring myself to even touch Civ4 BTS ever since they came out with Civ5 GaK. The former games look and feel their age, and I like the changes for the most part to both.
