ZyXEL Router Opinions

Looking to upgrade my router when I get my new business line installed.

These two caught my eye for affordable with a ton of options.


ZyXEL ZyWALL USG20W - Looks decent for all in one with wifi.

ZyXEL ZyWALL USG50 - More options specifically "security" options, not sure I would have a need for them? (I`m not paying yearly for anything.)

Are the additional virus/malware/etc security on the USG50 worth it?

I won't be connecting to an office or network elsewhere to increased VPN clients/options are not important.

If I do go with USG50 I'd have to use my old router as a wifi AP which I`m OK with too.
 
Main thing with the 50 is that it is a metal case, rackmountable, can handle more traffic (more users), dual wan options, and additional VPN client licenses.

The only other WAN we'd have here is Verizon 4G air card, which I believe the 20 had a USB plug for, i`m not sure they consider this an additional wan port ??
 
What's the relationship to Sessions and Devices?

I`m probably misunderstanding the terminology here, but if someone could explain Sessions that would be great.

Is each "request" made from a device a session? So if I`m gaming, browsing, downloading, visiting a website with 10 http requests each those are what a router views as "Sessions" and in the case of the website with 10 requests that's 10 sessions to the router ???
 
It really is traffic dependent, but sessions are usually an open connection. For example, loading a website like you said with multiple requests from different providers could be count as multiple sessions.

That said, they open and close fairly quickly. Whereas traffic like p2p can be much more strenuous on a router as it will keep many sessions all open at once.
 
Thanks that's what I suspected.

I'd imagine the lower session number on the "smaller" router won't be an issue since I`m not running any servers behind the router just personal computers for 2-3 people, and not more than 1-2 at once.
 
I use strictly ZyXEL USG line with all my business clients. Generally the 50 and 100. Can't go wrong with them. Firewall is dead stable.

I have a few sites that I use the UTM features but most clients dont require this,.
