Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

In terms of the big publishers, the best thing that can come from the success of this is respect for the PC platform. Respect that leads to PC specific development, and the extinction of poor console ports. They should at the very minimum realize that one of, if not the biggest, reason this was successful is that he made it ultra clear this is being developed as PC first and all that entails.

I'm sure they would realize how much respect there is for the PC platform, but my fear is that they will also find a way to dumb it down. What I'm saying is, even if this shows there's a MASSIVE PC community, they still may not find it's the best way to make money (i.e. have things come out for consoles, dumb it down and advertize the hell out of it).

Either way, this is a huge step for PC gaming in this day and age. Not on the level of Valve/Steam, but up there.

No, the only thing that will come out of it is that *if only we developed on consoles look how much more MONEY we would make!!!*.

I am happy I contributed, I have so much love for the Wing Commander/Privateer series.

I'm suddenly very interested in any/all CryEngine 3 game reviews.

for those that were having trouble in the rsi website during the last 48 hours, they are having a grace period where you'll be able to pledge (or purchase add-ons, or upgrade your current pledge) at the original tiers and prices until monday november 26th.

As far as I can tell, my pledge still has not been linked to my account. Anyone else still waiting on that? I know it's a manual process so it could take awhile but it's been weeks already...

is there even a charge on your credit card anymore? you said you filed a dispute with amazon directly, and then asked rsi for a refund as well. you may not even have a pledge at this point. if you have a pledge it should show up in your account under "your pledges".

i guess you can always send a follow-up e-mail. sorry, i don't really know what else to say. hopefully it gets resolved before the pay wall goes live.

Yes, sorry, I got one pledge refunded but if you remember, I had two, one that went through without my knowledge. I still have one valid pledge via Paypal and the receipt to prove it.

I did the form to link to my account a couple weeks back but under Pledges I still don't see anything.

According to their site they are still going through the linking process (possibly, same message on my Accounts page from weeks ago that says that) so maybe they're just not done yet.

This game looks unbelievable...Wing Commander and Starlancer/Freelancer are three of my favorite games ever, can't wait for this one.

Awesome preso.
Very informative. Chris Roberts is always good to listen to. He is so right, you can not scoff at those stats. High end PC's need games and the market is starved for games. Bring on the high end games!

I am still pissed that they haven't linked my pledge to my account.

Get in touch with them ASAP. Mine wasn't showing up either but I contacted them directly and they got it taken care of very quickly.

Great presentation and interesting stuff... didn't have too much trouble with my account link so I would also suggest contacting them asap. Cheers and can't wait for this one!

Aside from the SP campaign, how is it different from EvE?

1. Real time combat.
2. Modular ship design, customization up the wazoo to the point you can "overclock" parts and push them to limits (some further then others).
3. FPS combat inside ships. You can dock onto other ships, board them, and fight in first person with guns, etc aboard the ship.
4. Heavily physics based, every thruster on your ship affects movement, etc and the way you customize your ship impacts this. From having different thrusters, where you put them, the mass of your ship, etc.

Also it features first person view, within your ships cockpit fully realized. You see your arms/legs, your cockpit has all the info you'd expect in a real cockpit and everything. Completely designed to be as immersive as possible.

Seems like it's basically going to be Wing Commander meets Freelancer meets X3 (?)...so basically jizz-worthy awesomeness. :D

One question I have though, is that it appears you can buy ships...are you going to be able to access these ships in-game by playing, or is it some sort of exclusive stuff? Some of the ships are rather expensive...

Backers can get certain ships, which come iwth lifetime insurance (meaning when your ship blows up/you lose it, you can get it back).

However other ships you have to buy, and then all the parts and other things.

When you lose your ship (and you have no insurance on it to cover replacement) you can end up having to save up money to buy your own ship. You will have to take on missions (which provide a ship to fly) or working on another players ship (ships can have more then one person on board them, some up to 4 people, etc).

Some ships are very expensive (especially the large ones), and will take a while to get.

I can't wait for this, but I guess the 2014 date gives me time to find a nice joystick.

Gotcha, makes sense. I was just hoping it would be possible to get the stuff without real money, which it sounds like it is (minus insurance)

Yup. You forgot a touch of EVE as well. Its the fabled unicorn. It may be the first game I throw in for a kick starter. Still debating. Everyone I have shown it too has cried tears of joy and hope. If they can just pull it off.

Yeah, my understanding is that the stuff is all purchasable with in game currency. However, you can also spend real money now on those items, to start with a better load out.

There is apparently in game transactions for real money as well, I'm not sure how deep it runs.

Star Citizen is sounding like a dream game of mine - I've always wanted the ability to have not only a game where "Your avatar is the spaceship" but, your avatar actually is INSIDE the spaceship as a discreet entity. Being able to interact with my onboard computer systems, get up out of the cockpit and walk around (depending on the kind of ship of course) to my Space Kitchen to make Space Bagels and Space Tea, etc... is awesome. Even more so, is the ability to actually have real-time first person combat at the infantry level, both melee and ranged. Boarding? Bloody amazing. Looting from the cargo hold, then towing the ship to get its "plates changed" at a "grayspace" pirate haven so I can make use of the new craft without getting it detected as stolen etc... lots of awesome stuff. The amount of customization is absolutely amazing; I like being able to place a hula-girl doll on my cockpit display, or run down to my ship's hangar bay and climb into a snub-nose light fighter and launch from there etc..

I'm really glad I've backed, as it seems this project is actually going places and the Star Citizen team is actually making good and showing proof thereof on their intent to make the game with a depth unlike any that came before. I usually won't put down $200+ for anything but a "lifetime subscription" , but I feel like my Rear Admiral package (plus quite a few addons) for Star Citizen will be worth it. Really hope the finished product keeps up the quality and proves that uncompromising vision, great design and implementation are worth it in game design today, rather than doing the minimum effort to churn out the shallowest "safe bet" the market supports as many publishers and devs do these days..

I am in it for the Colonel level, plus.

I have been following this since it was announced and if it ends up half of what they are saying it will be, and what it looks like in the videos, I'll still be extremely ecstatic.

Anyone see the post with the citizen ID card samples? Pretty sexy looking. Can't wait until I get my green bounty hunter's card!

Yeah...I have faith in Chris Roberts, I don't think he's made anything terribly crappy game-wise (some of the movies have been total shit but, yeah... :p)

Star Citizen, that's a cool concept. Being a citizen of the entire galaxy, or maybe even the whole universe! I can dig it, only pleebs consider themselves a citizen of a measly country, or even a single planet. I'm a Star Citizen baby, my mind has been expanded, my conceptualizations broadened. Bring it on Chris Roberts!

What are you going to do with it once you get it?
What's the carbon footprint of it, especially considering that it serves no practical purpose?

There are SO many things that are useless and serve no purpose by that logic. It's a nice little thing to have, and a lot of people collect them.
