We are all GOING TO DIE! Thanks Stephen Hawking, thanks a lot. :mad:

Not exactly that the world is going to end, but that we're going to use up all of our resources and bleed the planet dry. Not too obscure to think about, considering the rate at which humanity has consumed resources over the past few hundred years.

The world will end...billions of years from now when the sun swallows it when it turns into a red giant. We'll be long gone though either from disease, war, drastic climate change, aliens, or who knows what.

What Hawkings is saying is that we need to diversify our portfolio, so to speak, so we can weather any global threats to the survival of our species. Even if Earth was wiped out, if we have colonies elsewhere in the solar system or in other planetary systems, we're in a much better position to continue our existence.

I dunno... is it really that important for humanity itself to survive? Maybe we need to create a record keeping system that other intelligent species can find or something. Maybe a better race will come forward, one that is less interested in violence.

That's how I read it too and I'm certain that's what he meant to say too - in addition to the natural cycle of the planet, with the polar shifts and all. He's right, if humanity wishes to survive, we need to get our collective asses in space, and by space, I don't mean Mars or the Moon. A thousand years isn't very long at all.

I was reading this book, Fingerprints of the Gods, by Graham Hancock, which is a conspiracy theory pile of rubbish where his points were getting at (predicting the end of the world in December 2012), but the underlying science and sociology of humanity deserves a look. The possibility of advanced humanity before the last polar shift which brought us the ice age, and civilizations wiped out before humanity grew again from nothing. Unless we wish to keep repeating that, we need to get off this planet and colonize elsewhere.

The Universe was here before us, and it will be here after us. That's certain.
Our existence is like a 24 hour day when it comes to the billions of years that has pasted and will pass again.

Constantine shored up the Christian religion as a mean to control the population. Quite the visionary, seeing how 2000 years later there's still untold millions of suckers.

Hawking may only be a theoretician, but someone needs to be asking all of the questions for scientists to find answers to, and a lot of his questions have been good ones.

Pretty much this.

The current human race will probably die off long before the planet itself is consumed by the sun. We know from archaeological and fossil digs, and research this planet goes through cycles of polar shift and temperature extremes. And, long before that happens, humans will probably use up most if not all the natural resources on this planet.

If we do not do anything to stop or slow down the use of natural resources of the planet, or find alternatives especially to fossil fuels, we will eventually write our own obituary. We are already facing increased population growth and we are expanding into natural environments that may force animal and plant species to go extinct like the rainforests. We are also using a lot of fossil fuels and are only slowing it down through the use of efficient gas engines and hybrids, but have not found a permanent alternative to them.

Between now and 1000 years from now, we have to push ourselves to find an alternate secondary home in space before we use up the resources on this planet or make it completely unlivable due to pollution, human waste, and destruction of natural environments. It's just unfortunate that at our current state in human history, we are doing very little to work towards that goal. It's very unfortunate.

In my opinion, it's going to either take another century or another world war to slap some fucking sense into humanity to start working together and helping each interdependently to solve our problems from socioeconomics to natural resources and the environment.

I'm honestly looking forward to that day when some big event just slaps reality in our face like a brick to the head. Because, honestly, we need it.

Given what humans did to this place in the last 100 years, it might be best for us to go extinct from our own causes and let things carry on with out us, they'll last much longer

Humans take over a new planet they'll have it over populated to the point some certain un-named countries are now and and exploit all its resources in 100 years or so anyways

I know you won't understand this because all you see on the TV media is American Idol, Reality TV, The Simpsons, and News media on crime, politics, other blown-out-of-proportion BS - but our scientists and engineers are advancing more than ever. You just don't hear about it.

I find Stephen Hawkings quote rather... dissapointing - and unfortunate. The amount accomplished by our race in 50 years is huge - and it grows exponentially in the next 50 years.

Predictions for the next 500 years:
-Ample ways to travel outside of earth.
-Much more knowledge of the universe.
-Much more knowledge on the human brain.
-Much more knowledge of what is currently considered "limited resources" - which is rather comical considering the lack of knowledge and exploration we have on this entire huge planet. It could simply be better use of resources, or duplication of resources - either way we will find a solution in due time.

Negative, we use up resources, they cost more, perhaps we fight over them more, perhaps many people die from the fighting and lack of resources. Then you have fewer people and there are enough to go around again.

You don't use up something that is renewable. All we need is water, air, and food. If we have less of something then we have less people, not no people.

Fragile planet he says. BP dumped how many hundreds of thousands of barrels into the gulf ocean. So many were yelling about the great disaster. Within less then a year the oil is all gone, eaten by little microbes we never knew existed. All our smart people and we forget that crude oil is a natural product of this planet and this planet is possesses a means of dealing with everything that is natural to it.
 
Unfortunately unless we discovery some new form of energy/propulsion we are not going nowwhere fast. The amount of energy required to even reach our nearest star is ridiculous. Chemical based propulsion is out because we can't practically store that much and ion drives take sometime to build up speed.

The only way we can go anywhere in a reasonable amount of time is either by discovering FTL travel without the huge energy requirements and somehow getting around that pesky FTL speed limit :) Until lets just plan on holding hands when the sun expands and fries us.

This is foolish. I am not particularly religious but even I can recognize that something like 3/4 of the world's population, (very rough guess), are religious and therefor religion makes perfect sense to them.

The religious simply see something in it that the non-religious do not.

Even in the longest stretch of understanding, if believe in something false fosters something positive, then falsehood beliefs are not by definition a bad thing.

Of course those beliefs are all idealistic. Man is not perfect so when the imperfect try to emulate the perfect, you wind up with perfectly imperfect results :D

I have lived there in the last year, you can see it is just like it used to be before the spill with the exception of all the shit we tore up trying to clear up the mess.

No, his particular interest is in botany specifically carnivorous plants. Hawkings is a side interest. The kid is brilliant so he clearly did not get that aspect from me.

I'm just disappointed with the human race in general. We can accomplish so much yet why are our efforts spent on wasteful things and not helping each other.

Yes, I know there are scientists and researchers working on finding solutions and new discoveries and new technologies to help humanity. I read about them every day. I've literally stopped watching TV. It's all a bunch of infomercials, biased and skewed news media, reality TV shows, and the same crap that gets aired every night.

We as the human race are capable of so much, and, yes, we have accomplished a lot in the last 50 or 100 years. Yet, each year it seems we are regressing more and more in our own society, environment and governments. There's the economic issues in Europe. Violence in the Mideast. The ineptitude and ignorance of the American Congress, and its segregated and bipartisan issues over getting things down and accomplishing little in the past three or four Presidential administrations. We have environmental and socioeconomic issues in the poorest parts of the world. Inequality towards homosexuals and females in certain parts of the world.

And, I ask myself: Is anything being done? Has anything been accomplished in that regard to those issues?

Little to none.

While scientists and researchers are finding ways to alternative energy sources, solving mysteries of the universe, finding new methods of space propulsion and travel, new medicines and medical treatments, and stemming global warming, our own leaders have shown little to nothing in terms solving problems closer to home. And, that I'm quite disappointed with.

Sure, we'll probably be using electric vehicles in 500 years, scientists have probably figured out sustainable nuclear fusion power to replace fossil fuels, and we proabably have colonized the Moon and Mars by then, but will we have solved social and economic issues by then?

I really hope so. So, when someone says on the Internet "I've lost faith in humanity," I'm one of those people because nothing is being done to solve the social and socioeconomic issues of this planet. I'm honestly proud of what our own scientists and researchers have come up with in the last 10, 20, 50 years. But, I'm not proud of our political leaders nor do I hold them in the same regard as someone as Elon Musk, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Watson and Crick, Neil Armstrong or the Wright Brothers.

I keep up with and read a lot of scientific and research news ranging from astronomy to genetics to physics. And, I keep up with political, world and local news. It's disappointing when the science news are more interesting and much less depressing to read than your local and world news. Heck, I was excited to hear NASA contribute $600 million dollars into nuclear fusion propulsion research a few days ago. But, I grew a little disappointed when I read two Ottawa, Canada girls were arrested for pimping other teenage girls, or when someone ran a stabbing spree on a Texas college campus, or two 4-year olds died within 2 days of each other, or when a homosexual man was arrested in a Missouri hospital and placed on restraining order so that he can't see his husband.

So, don't take me for a fool. I read the news a lot, and I read a lot of publications and journals. I read everything from Al-Jazeera to CNN to Bloomberg to Forbes to Scientific American to Popular Science to Astronomy and everything else in-between-- even the ones that are either too liberal and too conservative.

I like to see the world from two sides of the coin. If one doesn't do that, in my opinion, it makes them very biased and very skewed to the issues that surround them, as well unsympathetic and un-empathetic at the same time.

Amen. Hawking possesses one of the greatest minds in the history of minds. Maybe if he would appear on a couple episodes if The Kardashians or maybe be a judge for American Idol he'd be more respected.

Please listen to this narrated short story by Issac Asimov, called "The Last Question".

It's 28 minutes long, but I think you will find it interesting. Keep in mind it was written in 1956, so the exact technology mentioned will be off but over all idea is very accurate I believe.

There are fissures in the ocean floor that are constantly spewing out oil and the ocean just dissolves it. Oil is part of nature.

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that the amount of oil that poured out was the equivalent of a soda can in Cowboys stadium when compared to the Gulf of Mexico. The world is a lot bigger than people think it is. Not to mention, mankind is a lot more insignificant when compared to the earth than people think as well.
