Congrats to EA for beating some stiff competition this year in the Worst Company in America contest. The company has released a statement, or should I say acceptance speech:

“This is the same poll that last year judged us as worse than companies responsible for the biggest oil spill in history.” Mr. Moore continues, “The complaints against us last year were our support of SOPA (not true), and that they didn’t like the ending to Mass Effect 3.”

Ridiculous. I hate EA, but there are FAR worse companies in this country.

What is posted here that I saw a story about the now bankrupt/gone companies that brought us "classic" games that we love like Origin and Sierra?

I couldn't help but notice that three or four of the ten companies in the article were bought by EA prior to them going bye bye.

EA deserves the title. If I'd had to pay for crisis 3, I would not have.

Because people care more about Mass Effect 3 ending then food ownership or environment.

Other companies do more actual *damage*, but no one crushes your soul quite like EA.

I guess we have to differentiate between bad and evil companies.

EA may be a bad company, but it is not an evil company like all the oil giants, banks, military contractors, etc. There needs to be a different competition for those.

I agree that having EA win twice does diminish the credibility of this survey. They make a 1st world entertainment product. This deeply affects your life how?

I saw nothing wrong with the way Consumerist presented/conducted this.

I do think that for EA to win this....it's an indication as to where peoples' hearts, minds, and money are. There are worse companies doing worse things IMHO. But ok.

After reading the official company response....all I could do is chuckle. They can keep their games....I'm not interested.

Have to agree with this.

EA has a PR problem compared to most other companies. Polls like this are exactly why I am disgusted with Americans and our "intelligence" and don't trust most Americans with how to solve problems.

EA is the worst game company, but to win the overall worst business a company should have a truly negative impact on the public. Personally I think Congress belongs on the list.

As a correction to this front page listing, EA won last year and is likelt headed for the finals to win again this year. The Consumerist article linked is merely a flame-bait response to a really stupid blog post by EA COO Peter Moore.

Yes, there are many worse companies in this country like poison giant turned poison food creator Monsanto, or the big energy companies, or all the major (and most minor) health insurance companies, or most of big pharma, or ,or ,or. This is one of the joys of an internet based contest that caught the attention of 4chan even if it is only the /v board rather than of its truly frightening boards.

I was gonna say that we are missing 3 bouts to crown them this year.

EA vs Ticket Master

Bank of America vs Comcast

And the final, which all signs point down will be a repeat of last year:

EA vs BoA

Called it. Internet nerds voted. Not people that care about the economy. No brainer.

All one had to do was take a look at the starting list to know this wasn't going to be a comprehensive survey. On top of it, as much as some of you know about Haliburton, Monsanto and other especially repugnant companies, the general public doesn't know the first of it. At least for these several, up front and publicly visible companies the most we can take away from this is that these companies have a very poor public image. The fact that they even show up on this list should be enough to entice them to fix this, although most won't because their practices are centered around money and not your feelings.

Well, EA was trying really hard to piss everyone off anyway:p
They seriously need some PR dept to limit the BS their exacs spew out

Yes, there are far worse companies, but what tends to affect people the most are those that feel directly and personally attacked by these companies. Treated like criminals instead of loyal paying customers. Basically it hits close to home. Companies like Monsanto, IMO, are evil. Willing to let the people of poor countries starve or bind them in a way that makes them totally dependent on Monsanto. Monsanto puts $$$ above all else and I do mean ALL else. The Future of Food

We just may not feel their influence so personally.

Well, there may be worse companies out there, but at least they don't publicly state that customers are nothing but pirates, thieves, and liars while cranking out the same products with a new number after the title like EA does. Which is exactly why EA was crowned again, imo.

I agree, but isn't that because people many people have never even heard of the Consumerist in the first place? This is only a reflection of a small cross section of people.

No matter how bad EA is, they still only make video games. Of the companies listed in the competition this year, BoA would have to be the "worst" in terms of actual damage done to the country.

True, there are wose companies that have done more harm, but the context of the survey is important. The conerns are from the perspective of consumers patronizing a business. EA is pretty competitive among other companies when it comes to screwing over individual consumers.

The corporate response demonstrates the lack of consumer understanding and, possibly, a willingness to shurg off blame to everything and everyone else but themselves. It demonstrates that they probably haven't figured out yet that they're doing things wrong.

100% agree.

I dunno man. Game industry is just a small drop in the world of industries, it's hard to believe that in a multitude of different companies from different areas there would be no one worse than EA.

EA's response is a joke. If EA was in a position to cause the largest oil spill in history they would do it and charge microtransactions on the cleanup.

The whole pole is rendered invalid.

I think they need to keep entertainment companies off the list.

People hate who they hate. To keep certain company's off that list for ANY reason makes your point invalid. Now, to keep people from complaining they could separate them by categories but the point still stands.

Two things for the people bitching about Monsanto/BoA/whatever not winning:

1) Monsanto wasn't even on the list of choices AFAIK

2) It's a poll for anti-consumer practices...BoA is more financial stuff, not so much directly consumer related.

That said, I think EA deserves the win yet again based on the concept of the poll. In case anyone missed it:

“This is the same poll that last year judged us as worse than companies responsible for the biggest oil spill in history,” writes Moore. He’s obviously referencing the 2011 champ BP, except BP wasn’t even in the bracket last year. In response to Moore’s statement, we’d like to take a moment to explain that our “Worst Company in America” contest exists within the context of this website, which is about consumers and their relationship to the marketplace and to businesses. Just to be clear: The point of this contest, now in its 8th year, is to enable consumers to send a message to a company that provides goods or services to them. Winning this contest means your customers are trying to tell you something. And that something is that you, out of all the companies, most deserve a plastic poop trophy.

I don't think the easily excited sorts that post in this forum will understand. They're too busy worrying about everything because even the differences between two consoles is a GRAVELY SERIOUS matter of debate.

Majority of non-gamers probably didn't even know about this event.

But EA must be doing something wrong to be on the list with companies that are actually terrible for the human race, and the planet.

I like Mr Moore's blame the consumers for what is wrong with the company approach. It has nothing to do with the DRM controlled Sim City, the umpteenth version of Madden, that doesn't look any different than it did eight years ago, or heavily chopped up games for the sake of DLC content.

This is stupid. So many other companies in this country that deserve this WAY more than EA, regardless off what they have done in the past year. Leave it to a bunch of gamers to bitch about something that means absolutely nothing the whole scheme of things. As a gamer myself I never thought I would say this, but these people that are making a huge stink about EA this need to get a freaking life.

That statement right there just goes to show them WHY they received this "honor" yet again.
