My friends, an opporunity has arisen for me to get the last hold out of my friends to move to PC with the release of BF4 and the PS4. We were talking the other day and he is now more open to the idea since we are all going to drop the coin on a PS4 anyways.

I don't mind playing on the console at all, I just don't want to have to drop $600+ on a PS4 when all it will be for is to play BF4 with the group. The single player exclusives just don't interest me anymore. I am going to have a PC anyway because of DotA 2 and a few other games they don't play. The others have PCs for other reasons as well.

I need a build list that is CLOSE to the cost of the PS4 (I think it will be $499 for a base and $599 for a "premium" model).

Assume you start from nothing. You need Monitor, Mouse, and KB too.

There are no rules. AMD, Radeon, Nvidia, Intel, or hell buy this dell, replace power supply, and drop this vid card in and go to work.

What performance should we target? I think BF4 will be pretty close to BF3 requirement wise. So current mid range hardware should be able to hit medium-high at 1080P with some AA and AF?

The more we find out about BF4 we can tweak it, until then just ASSUME BF3 if need be.

Given the current release date of the PS4 is this October or November, you're better off waiting to do this challenge until then due to hardware and pricing changes over the next 6+ months. (Though this thread topic is, at best, an apples/oranges comparison.)

I understand about waiting, but everything is also relative. It will get cheaper or better hardware for same price.

How is it a apples/oranges? It is claimed all over this forum that this is easily acheivable. I thought it would be to.

so do you need a monitor for the ps4 too?

Actually you are right, so don't include a monitor.

I just know I will hear "I already have my TV". LOL.

I am thinking we can get enough push if we comes in just shy of a G-spot to get everything.

Yes. But your comparison either does not acknowledge this fact or ignores it altogether.

So, to rephrase the question: Are you wanting to compare the (currently unreleased) PS4 system's hardware specs against the best gaming computer you can build for for the same price of a PS4 now or at the release date?

How is it a apples/oranges? It is claimed all over this forum that this is easily acheivable. I thought it would be to.
Because the software you're running isn't the same. The underlying OS is not the same, the resource utilization is not the same, and the architecture is not the same. The game's binaries may not be identical. Additionally, there's plenty of past history about compromises made in the released product due to architectural limitations of the various consoles.

assuming it is an hdtv, you can use that for a computer monitor.

Then why bother plan the PC now? Again: The PS4 isn't due out till October/November. As such, a more accurate performance PC comparison should be done then. Especially considering that the parts we recommend this month may not be the same parts we recommend next month let alone 6-7 months from now. Parts can become out of stock, overpriced, out of date, or outperformed in that time frame. Then there's the fact that Intel will be releasing their Haswell based CPUs in that timeframe.

Or in other words: Why plan a PC that we know whose specs will change often over time due to pricing and availability? Why go through all that work and trouble during those several months? Unless there's a dire need for a PC now, why not wait till October/November to plan a PC?

So unless you are buying the PC now, no point in planning a PC build more than a month in advance. Otherwise, you just screw yourself over in terms of tech, availability, and pricing.

Probably wont quite match the graphics power of the PS4, but it'll be a decent start. Add whatever mouse pad they want, add storage as desired, speakers or headsets, cable up the TV and have at it.

Since you have an extended time to prepare the PC before BF4 and because a new architecture is coming in between, I would suggest you either:
1. wait for Haswell so that you buy into the latest tech
2. buy used SB or Ivy components from people moving to Haswell.

You may notice that both of my options suggest waiting. That is because I cannot see any reason to be a PC convert right now when your friend has waited so long and the game he wishes to play is months away.

This was just supposed to be a topic of discussion, not something set in stone. Geez talk about getting rail roaded.

Hardware and price is a sliding scale. If you budgeted the $200 model video cards now then you would buy whatever that model is when its time. You will also get more for your money just by waiting. I understand that.
