Sony is rumored to be introducing three new lines of smartphones and two of them will carry some old familiar names associated with quality products. The Cyber-Shot phone will focus heavily on the phone’s camera system and the Walkman phone will, as expected, have a heavy emphasis on audio qualities.

In their day, the original Cyber-shot and Walkman phones were among the very best you could buy, and hardware such as the K800 attracted the same adoration that the Lumia 920 or 808 PureView’s camera performance does today.

Provided the hardware lives up to the reputation, I think it is a smart move by them. Time will tell if they do it right or not.

This is the core problem with Sony, they have tried to ride too much on their name, which USED to be synonymous with quality. Lately though, (within the past 10 years) Sony has not upheld this quality standard, and now nobody recognizes "Sony" as quality.

That's why they are now taking names of products and applying them to current ones, to attempt to bring back that consumer "feeling" that went along with those names.

Uh... Sony RX1, Sony A99, Zeiss 85, 135, etc... They are very relevant.

never heard of any of those things...

what the heck is an RX1? sounds like a hatchback?

as far as their cameras, they made the 717, everything after that has been pretty much overshadowed by much better cameras from Nikon/Canon/Panasonic/whoever

Not the way they used to be. Sound afficianados are really annoyed with the lower quality equipment they've released (and I would know, there's a guy at work that spends thousands on music equipment a month), and the markets they're doing well in are, well, shrinking.

I thought they already tried to bring back Walkman with an mp3 players and it didn't work.

because those names plastered on those devices will make them better.

uh huh.
