Honestly, every time a politician tries to bring up internet sales tax, we need to vote them out of office. Trust me, it wouldn't take long for other politicians to get the message.

Internet tax supporters are hoping that a vote in the U.S. Senate as early as today will finally give them enough political leverage to require Americans to pay sales taxes when shopping online. Sens. Mike Enzi (R-Wy.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) are expected to offer an amendment to a Democratic budget resolution this week that, by allowing states to "collect taxes on remote sales," is intended to usher in the first national Internet sales tax.

Indeed..Or this is also how to drive businesses overseas losing yet more american jobs. Internet taxes won't stop me from purchasing online, it will just stop me from purchasing online from companies in the US.

I am completely opposed to paying more taxes while our politicians continue to demonstrate a level of fiscal irresponsibility that is just mind blowing.

You all do realize that you are legally obligated to pay taxes on everything you buy online already, right? You're just complaining that now companies would be obligated to collect said tax.

Why don't you cry about it more and start throwing more boxes of tea overboard some boat or something.

C'mon, tell me you didn't see this happening. Not that I welcome being taxed, but it's due time.

Wait, are you saying digging deeper in the hole won't get you out of it? Lunacy! :p

Couldn't agree with you more! They need to learn the word budget!

I wouldn't mind an internet tax... except for the way politicians think. They're 1T over budget, and if the internet tax brings in $1T in revenue they wouldn't just let it stand as the budget is balanced, they'd see it as a 1T increase in revenue as a result they have another 1T to spend on other projects, and then by the time they're finished making deals to pass their spending bills of this 'new revenue' they'll end up spending 2T to do it.

what i was going to say can not be explained any better. all this does is make it easier on them to collect taxes already owed on purchases instead of the good old honor system we have now.

I call bullshit on this. The cost and logistics of reliably getting things imported from overseas will make the 5% tax or whatever well worth it.

Sigh... I hate when these articles surface. If you REALLY don't want meet your legal obligation to pay taxes then maybe you should move to a country where you don't have to pay taxes

It's just a hair under 10% in taxifornia, so yes it's worth it. Cananda is just a few extra shipping days anyway, and doesn't require going overseas.

RILA's board members include representatives of Best Buy, Home Depot, Walmart, Whole Foods, Target, and AutoZone.

All the board members charge national tax already, no change there. Only place that doesn't charge sales tax is newegg. Online stores will have to do a lot better at lowering there prices if you can get the same at B&M once this goes though.

If the Elephants are signing on for this too, we are eventually gonna get stuck with this.

You say overseas...But it could really be just off the coast. Amazon et al would have container ships/rafts(/cities?) anchored just off the coast and ferry in necessary inventory to the UPS receiving dock once or twice a day to ship out.

That sounds like it would be as cheap or cheaper than maintaining grounded warehouses on the mainland and distributing from them. I'm sure that wouldn't have an effect on prices at all.

Sarcasm aside, even getting things shipped from Canada is is going to induce some logistical overhead.

Exactly. There's a reason a lot of companies flat out refuse to ship to Canada. Customs is a bitch.

Paying anywhere from 5-10% more for something online plus the shipping and handling is still a lot cheaper than shopping at local brick and mortor stores. At least it would be where I live.

When I mean a lot cheaper a 1TB hdd at newegg is 80-100 bucks. Local Best Buy is near $200. Not sure why anyone really walks in there anymore. They must not have heard about online shopping.

So I take it you pay these taxes voluntarily on every online purchase, to be making sarcastic remarks to those of us who do not want to pay the taxes, right?

 You two are assuming EVERY state has sales tax. Here's an extra  for your efforts though.

I'm for the tax. It has been fun while it lasted, but last time I checked teachers actually need salaries to teach our children and roads don't pave themselves.

I like children to be taught and my roads to be paved.

 You are assuming EVERY state has sales tax. Here's an extra  for you.

Only third world states like Alaska don't have sales taxes and it's simply because they lack the infrastructure to keep adequate track of citizens so they can actually charge taxes.

:D

Tell you what..When State and Federal Balance their budgets and they fix serious problems in the tax system that cause me to make less money after taxes than someone who earns 10k a years less than me due to being near a tier. Then you can talk to me about my "legal" obligation to be taxed online. Until then, they can frankly go screw themselves as I am paying the absolute minimum I am forced to pay by itemizing the shit out of my returns and not a penny more.

And both of those budgets will get slashed even if this passes. Dream on.

Well, no, not at all. I wouldn't expect a state with no sales tax to start charging a sales tax for online purchases. I'm have no idea where you drew that conclusion from and I'm not 100% sure what your point is.

In any case, I'm flattered that one of my posts got quoted by Steve, regardless of the circumstances. :D

I think we are ALL for that (at least we'd better be ;)). I'll never understand how we live in a society where garbage men make the same amount as a teacher.

What I would like to see is our government living within its means and quit taxing the hell out of people because they can't trim the fat / balance a budget.

Everything is gonna be taxed now. In the not so distant future If you take a shit, you will be taxed.

Gotta pay for the countries illegals and welfare recipients somehow.

how about they use the money they have properly before they vote themselves more.

If a fat guy can vote himself to get more food - -what motivation would he ever have to get back on track to a healthy lifestyle?

I'd love to instantly put into effect a negatively sloped logarithmic pay scale for every person that holds public office. For every month that we continue to bleed money and run our deficit up... their pay goes down. Once you hit a budget that's balanced and starts to unwind the debt we've run up we can freeze the pay at whatever level they finally started acting right.

Incentive -- politicians have zero.

I pay sales tax on 90% of my online purchases now, living in King County. Where I live, the sales tax is retardedly high, though I pay no state income tax.

The biggest threat to this country's economy is our own politicians. Their ineptness and greed puts us in a financial hole, then they try to dig us out by taxing anything successful to death.

That's what Amazon did in the UK (until the government changed the tax laws). They stored most the stuff on one of the islands from which you didn't pay import tax.
